Pronunciation
 sw- in sweet and sweater
 spr- in spray and spring
 str- in stripe and strap
We use the passive voice when we are more interested in the
action itself rather than in “who” or “what” did the action.
The agent can be:
* unimportant – “These shoes are made in Indonesia.” (the action
is more important than who made the shoes)
* unknown – “The windows were broken yesterday.” (somebody
broke the windows and we don’t know who did it)
* implicit – “He was arrested.” (most certainly by the police)
Basic steps to form the passive voice:
The object of the active becomes the subject of the
passive.
We add the auxiliary “to be” – “is/are” when the main
verb of the active is present, and “was/were” when it
is past.
In negative or interrogative sentences the auxiliary
“to do” is replaced by “to be”:
- do(n’t) / does(n’t) become is(n’t) / are(n’t);
- did(n’t) becomes was(n’t) or were(n’t).
We turn the main verb of the active into the past
participle.
If we need or want to add the agent of the passive,
we must use “by”.

A. Complete the blanks with is/are + participle.
1) Computers __________________ (sell) in many different

2) English ___________________________ (speak) almost

7) Many people ____________________ (influence) by the
media.
8) Lots of TV ____________________ (watch) nowadays.

agent only when necessary.

Tambun Gediu, now badly lacerated and recovering in hospital, had tried hitting the tiger away in
vain and says his wife saved his life.
Wildlife rangers plan to track the tiger and send it further into dense, unpopulated jungle in the
northern state of Perak.
"I was trailing a squirrel and crouched to shoot it with my blowpipe when I saw the tiger.
"That's when I realised that I was being trailed," Mr Gediu said after surgery.
The tiger pounced not far from the Gediu home in a jungle settlement of the Jahai tribe.
Mr. Gediu had tried climbing a tree to escape the animal, but was dragged down by the tiger.
His wife, 55-year old Han Besau, rushed out of the kitchen on hearing his screams and used the
kitchen implement to good effect.
"I was terrified and I used all my strength to punch the animal in the face, but it would not budge,"
the New Straits Times newspaper quoted him as saying.
"I had to wrestle with it to keep its jaws away from me, and it would have clawed me to death if my
wife had not arrived."
It was the first time anyone in the village had been attacked by a tiger.
The director of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks in the state, Shabrina Mohd Shariff,
estimated that there were about 200 tigers in the jungles of Perak.
She added that five had been spotted near the major East-West Highway in the region.

WHEN DO WE USE THE PRESENT
PERFECT SIMPLE?
1. For actions which happened at an
indefinite time in the past but we
don’t mention exactly when as the
exact time is not important. These
actions often have consequences in the
present.
Peter has broken his leg. (He can’t
walk now.)
2. For actions which happened in the past
but we don’t mention an exact time.
He has seen that film.
3. Recent actions completed a short time
ago (or where we expect the results to
be imminent) where results are often
visible in the present. In this case we
usually use just, already and yet.
Carlos has just finished his
homework.
Have you done your homework
yet?
Maria has already tidied her
room.
4. Experiences that we have or haven’t
had in our lives, there is not a definite
time given - “up to now”. In this case
we use ever and never.
Have you ever been to Gabon?
I have never been to Spain.
5. For an action that began in the past
and is related to now: often used with
Since and For.
I have taught at this school for

Blends sw spr str Swim Sword Swan Sprout Spread Spring Street Stream Strain Pronunciation  sw- in sweet and sweater  spr- in spray and spring  str- in stripe and strap We use the passive voice when we are more interested in the action itself rather than in “who” or “what” did the action. The agent can be: * unimportant – “These shoes are made in Indonesia.” (the action is more important than who made the shoes) * unknown – “The windows were broken yesterday.” (somebody broke the windows and we don’t know who did it) * implicit – “He was arrested.” (most certainly by the police) Basic steps to form the passive voice: The object of the active becomes the subject of the passive. We add the auxiliary “to be” – “is/are” when the main verb of the active is present, and “was/were” when it is past. In negative or interrogative sentences the auxiliary “to do” is replaced by “to be”: - do(n’t) / does(n’t) become is(n’t) / are(n’t); - did(n’t) becomes was(n’t) or were(n’t). We turn the main verb of the active into the past participle. If we need or want to add the agent of the passive, we must use “by”. 1 2 4 5 A. Complete the blanks with is/are + participle. 1) Computers __________________ (sell) in many different stores. 2) English ___________________________ (speak) almost everywhere. 3) _______ these shoes ___________ (design) in Portugal? 4) Less ice-cream __________________ (eat) in the winter. 5) Spanish ___________________ (teach) in my school too. 6) Fashionable clothes ___________________ (wear) both by boys and girls. 7) Many people ____________________ (influence) by the media. 8) Lots of TV ____________________ (watch) nowadays. Exercise 1. Are the following statements true or false? Write T for True or F for False. A man has been rescued from a near-fatal attack by a tiger in northern Malaysia by his wife. She entered the fray wielding a wooden soup ladle at the tiger - which fled. Tambun Gediu, now badly lacerated and recovering in hospital, had tried hitting the tiger away in vain and says his wife saved his life. Wildlife rangers plan to track the tiger and send it further into dense, unpopulated jungle in the northern state of Perak. His wife, 55-year old Han Besau, rushed out of the kitchen on hearing his screams and used the kitchen implement to good effect. "I was terrified and I used all my strength to punch the animal in the face, but it would not budge," the New Straits Times newspaper quoted him as saying. "I had to wrestle with it to keep its jaws away from me, and it would have clawed me to death if my wife had not arrived." It was the first time anyone in the village had been attacked by a tiger. The director of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks in the state, Shabrina Mohd Shariff, estimated that there were about 200 tigers in the jungles of Perak. She added that five had been spotted near the major East-West Highway in the region.
