2008 will be known as the year that mobile computing changed forever. With the launch of a development ecosystem around the Apple iPhone, the global launch of the iPhone 3G, the pending release of Google’s new mobile operating system, Android, and Nokia’s acquisition of Symbian, what we’ve known historically as ‘mobile phones’ have suddenly become something much more. We are witnessing the birth of a new class of technology - pocket-sized devices with always-on broadband that understand who you are and where you are. The implications of this convergence are far-reaching, and perhaps a bit disturbing for some.

July 11th marked the release of iPhone 3G and with it, Software Update 2.0, which includes Apple's launch of the App Store. The App Store allows for third party developers to create and distribute applications for iPhone and iPod touch using the iPhone SDK, a native development environment based on Cocoa for Mac OS X. In his talk, Raven will provide a basic overview of the process of developing and distributing software for the iPhone and iPod touch, and share some key findings and metrics gathered in the two weeks since the launch of the App Store. A presentation given at Web 2.0 Expo 2011 in San Francisco, CA, on March 30, 2011. A year has passed since the release of Apple’s iPad, and with it, new opportunities for developers, content publishers, and entrepreneurs, have clearly emerged. We now have a proven market for a third type of mobile, Internet-enabled device – more intimate than a laptop and more expansive than a smartphone. In a follow-up to his 2010 Web 2.0 Expo talk, “iPad: Mobile Computing Redefined,” Raven looks back on the first year of the iPad – its successes and failings, as well as a look forward to Apple’s new hardware and software technologies and their inevitable impact on the market. 2011 will be an even bigger year for the consumer tablet sector, with additional hardware players, continued app and services innovation, and a more mainstream, global market for these devices.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
