Teaching statistics has increasingly been regarded as a complex mission to accomplish as it consists of many different mathematical components with many variables. Despite extensive research work in developing education in statistics, this discipline still requires significant improvement in how it is taught. Most students at university have a lack of interest in undertaking statistics courses due different factors - some of them are related to teaching techniques and others are related to method of assessment. In these slides, Saad Odeh presents an effective teaching technique in statistics developed by SIBT teachers. Rather than enabling the cohort by providing them with extra help to progress in statistics, the idea was to improve their confidence when they do the major assessment, 'the final exam'.

Research Objective: The SAFTINet project was funded by the AHRQ to build a distributed network of existing clinical and claims data that would support comparative effectiveness research (CER), with a focus on underserved populations and healthcare delivery system (HDS) characteristics. Observational research methods are appropriate, but require detailed protocols with a priori hypotheses and analytic plans. SAFTINet research specifically concerns the effects of a discrete set of HDS features (those often included in Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) models) on health outcomes for primary care patients with asthma, hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia. Our objective is to present a description of this study’s measurement challenges, and to specify a priori hypotheses, analytic strategies, and plans for addressing bias and confounding for our asthma cohorts. Study Design: An observational, longitudinal cohort study of primary care patients with asthma, with both secondary use of existing clinical and claims data and primary data collection for HDS features and patient- reported outcomes. Population Studied: Our sample consists of 59 primary care practices in 5 healthcare organizations in Colorado, Utah and Tennessee; all practices serve underserved populations. These practices care for about 275,000 patients per year, of whom an estimated 22,000 have a diagnosis of asthma. Principal Findings: We will present the processes used to define and measure the HDS features, covariates and asthma outcomes, along with planned analysis. Challenges include valid measurement of a multi-faceted HDS “exposure” variable, the inability to identify exposure onset, and the non-dichotomous nature of HDS characteristics. To measure HDS characteristics, we created a practice-level survey assessing 9 PCMH domains, including care coordination, specialty care and mental health integration, and patient-centeredness, as well as asthma-specific HDS characteristics (e.g., the use of asthma registries). Asthma outcomes included (1) those available as a result of routine electronic documentation of clinical care and claims administration (utilization indicative of an exacerbation), and (2) patient reported outcomes tools (Asthma Control Test). We used directed acyclic graphs to identify potential confounders of the relationship between HDS characteristics and asthma control, as well as other potential biases. The analytic plan is based on linear mixed effects models. Perspectives of the CER team, the technology team and the community engagement group were considered in the operationalization of all variables. Conclusions: The design of rigorous observational CER observational CER should recognize the need for an intense planning phase. In accordance with good practice guidance for observational studies, an important component of the planning phase is to disseminate and obtain feedback on the research design in advance of its conduct.

The Hybrid Learning Model: Supporting the Student Experience

Co-operative learning is defined as students working together to “attain groups goals that cannot be obtained by working alone or competitively”. The main purpose of co-operative learning is to actively involve students in the learning process, a level of student empowerment which is not possible in a lecture format. The present study found out the effectiveness of co-operative learning in mathematics learning among the eighth standard students of Tirunelveli district. Two equivalent group experimental-designs are employed for this study. The investigator has selected 40 students studying VIII standard in High School, Tirunelveli Educational District. According to the scoring of pre-test, 20 students were chosen as control group and 20 students were chosen as experimental group in a cluster sampling techniques. Finally the investigator concludes that; (a) There was significant difference between control and experimental group students in their gain scores. That is the experimental group student is better than control group students in their gain scores. (b)There was significant difference between control and experimental group students in their gain scores for attainment of the knowledge, understanding, and application objectives.

This study investigated the use of problems-solving and its effect on student achievement in the mole concept. Ninety six (96) senior secondary II students were randomly selected form Demonstration Secondary School, College of Education Azare. The instrument for data collection was 30-item chemistry achievement test (CAT). The instrument was validated and its reliability determined to be 0.81. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. The data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions, while t-test statistics was used to answer the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The results revealed that student taught using problem-solving performed significantly better than those taught through lecture method. From the findings chemistry teachers are encouraged to attend seminars/workshops on problem -solving in order to facilitate the teaching and learning of chemistry in schools.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
