1. Book Day: How and when is it
celebrated
El Día Mundial del Libro se celebra cada año el 23 de abril,
promueve la alegría de leer como una herramienta para combatir
la pobreza y el analfabetismo y para crear puentes entre culturas,
personas e ideas.
World Book Day is annually celebrated on April 23rd to promote
the joy of reading as a tool to combat poverty and illiteracy, as
well as to create bridges between cultures, peoples, and ideas.

3. El Día Mundial del Libro y Derecho de Autor fue establecido por
la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la
Ciencia y la Cultura (UNESCO) en 1995 con el afán de apoyar la
creatividad, la diversidad y la igualdad de acceso al
conocimiento.
World Book and Copyright Day was established in 1995 by the
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
with the intention to support creativity, diversity, and equal
access to knowledge.

4. Esta celebración se lleva a cabo en la sede de la UNESCO y de
manera simultánea en todo el mundo, con la participación de
autores, artistas, editores, docentes y bibliotecarios; librerías y
casas editoriales; instituciones públicas, gubernamentales y
privadas; medios de comunicación, organizaciones humanitarias
y otros involucrados en el mundo de la lectura.
En el 2004 la UNESCO creó su Red de Ciudades Creativas de la
Literatura para que colaborasen en la celebración al promover la
alfabetización, el aprendizaje móvil y el libre acceso a recursos
educativos. En la actualidad trabajan 246 ciudades para poner al
centro de su desarrollo local a la creatividad y a las industrias
culturales.
This celebration takes place at UNESCO headquarters and
simultaneously around the world, with the participation of
authors, artists, editors, teachers, and librarians; bookshops and
publishing houses; government, private, and public institutions;
mass media, humanitarian organizations, and other parties
involved in the world of reading.

5. In 2004 UNESCO founded its Creative Cities Network so they
would collaborate in the celebration by promoting literacy,
mobile learning, and free access to educational resources.
Nowadays, 246 cities work to bring creativity and cultural
industries to the center of their development.
Cada año la UNESCO elige una ciudad como `Capital Mundial del
Libro´ y durante el 2021 será la ciudad de Tiflis en Georgia, un
país europeo localizado en la costa del Mar Negro y que hasta
1991 formó parte de la desaparecida Unión Soviética. Las
ciudades elegidas se comprometen a promover títulos y la
lectura mediante actividades sostenibles durante todo el año.
También se escoge un lema y en esta ocasión es Ok, ¿entonces
tu próximo libro es…?, con el cual se busca promover a la
tecnología como una gran herramienta para motivar a los
jóvenes a leer.
El programa se centrará en la innovación como vía para
aumentar la popularidad y accesibilidad a los libros para que
cada vez haya menos niños, jóvenes y comunidades con acceso
limitado a la lectura. Entre las actividades habrá un festival
digital de libro infantil que usará tecnología de última generación

6. para transformar libros en juegos y reconstruir la antigua
primera editorial georgiana.
Each year UNESCO designates a city as the World Book Capital
and this year it will be Tbilisi, Georgia, a European country
located on the Black Sea coast, which until 1991 remained as
part of the former Soviet Union. The chosen cities commit to
promoting titles and reading through sustainable activities
throughout the year. A motto is also chosen and this time it is
Ok, so your next book is…?, which seeks to promote technology
as a great tool to motivate young people to read.
The program will focus on innovation as a way to increase the
popularity and accessibility of books so that there are fewer and
fewer children, youngsters, and communities with limited access
to reading. Among the activities, there will be a digital children’s
book festival that will use cutting-edge technology to transform
books into games and rebuild the former first Georgian
publishing house.

7. La Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara (FIL) es el evento
literario más grande de América Latina pues cuenta con una
extensión de 119.000 m2 para su desarrollo y se le considera la
segunda feria más grande del mundo, después de la de
Fráncfort, Alemania.
La FIL fue fundada hace 35 años por la Universidad de
Guadalajara, en el estado de Jalisco, México. Reúne lo mejor del
mundo editorial y el público es parte central de la fiesta literaria
más importante de Iberoamérica. Durante nueve días la industria
y los lectores se reúnen para escuchar a los autores, hacer
negocios e intercambiar ideas. Como también es un festival
cultural, el país Invitado de Honor llena la ciudad de música, arte,
cine y teatro. Además, en cada edición participan distintos
continentes y lenguas; se abren mesas de discusión y
conferencias; se otorgan diversos premios y se realizan
homenajes a grandes figuras.
La edición de la FIL 2021 se llevará a cabo del sábado 27 de
noviembre al domingo 5 de diciembre. Así mismo, este año la FIL
celebra el Día Mundial Del Libro con un “maratón virtual de
lectura en voz alta” de las obras completas del guatemalteco
Augusto Monterroso, quien recibió los galardones del Príncipe
de Asturias de las Letras y el Premio Xavier Villaurrutia. A
Monterroso se le conoce por contar un cuento en tan sólo una
línea: “Cuando despertó, el dinosaurio todavía estaba allí”. Entre
sus diferentes iniciativas para fomentar la lectura, la FIL lanzó el
programa `Latinoamérica Viva´, un ciclo en el que han
participado 173 autores y puedes verlos aquí.

8. The Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL) is the largest
literary event in Latin America as it has an area of ​

119,000 m2 for
its development and is considered the second largest fair in the
world, after Frankfurt, Germany.
FIL was founded 35 years ago by the University of Guadalajara,
in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. It brings together the best of the
publishing world and the public is a central part of the most
important literary festival in Ibero America. For nine days, the
industry and readers meet to listen to authors, do business, and
exchange ideas. As it is also a cultural festival, the Guest of
Honor country fills the city with music, art, film, and theater. In
addition, in each edition different continents and languages

participate; discussion tables and conferences are opened;
various prizes are awarded, and tributes are made to great
figures.
The FIL 2021 edition will take place from Saturday, November 27
to Sunday, December 5. Likewise, this year FIL celebrates World
Book Day with a “virtual reading-aloud marathon” of the
complete works of Augusto Monterroso, the Guatemalan who
received the Prince of Asturias Award for Literature and the
Xavier Villaurrutia Prize. Monterroso is known for telling a story
in just one line: “When he woke up, the dinosaur was still there”.
Among its different initiatives to promote reading, FIL launched
the ‘Latin America Viva’ program, a cycle in which 173 authors

9. La historia trata de una horrible mujer grosera y del plan que
elaboran sus hijos y los habitantes del pueblo para hacerla
cambiar. Hinojosa es uno de los escritores de literatura infantil
más prolíficos de México. La anécdota está inspirada en una
vecina espantosa del autor, a quien le promete escribir sobre ella
como venganza. Este cuento está ilustrado por Rafael Barajas
Durán “el Fisgón”, un caricaturista del periódico La Jornada.

The story is about a horrible rude woman and the plan that her
children and the townspeople make in order to change her.
Hinojosa is one of the most prolific authors of children’s
literature in Mexico. The anecdote is inspired by an awful lady
neighbor of the author, who he promised to write about her in

10. revenge. This tale is illustrated by Rafael Barajas Durán “el
Fisgón”, a cartoonist at La Jornada newspaper. Here you can

Marco está emocionado porque su tía aventurera lo invita a un
viaje por cinco estados de la República Mexicana. Las
narraciones de la tía Neli muestran personajes legendarios de los
tres grupos que forjan la identidad del mexicano: los pueblos
indígenas, los conquistadores españoles y los esclavos
africanos que llegan con ellos al continente americano. Goldman
nace en la Ciudad de México, es autora de más de 40 libros para
niños publicados en diferentes países del mundo. Este título está
ilustrado por Israel Barrón, artista plástico mexicano.
Marco is excited because his adventurous auntie invites him on a
trip around five states of the Mexican Republic. Auntie Nellie’s
narrations show legendary characters from the three groups that
make up the Mexican’s identity: indigenous peoples, Spanish
conquerors, and the African slaves that arrived to the Americas
with them. Goldman is born in Mexico City, author of more than
40 children’s books published in different countries around the
world. This title is illustrated by Israel Barrón, Mexican plastic
artist.

11. Emilia tiene once años y está lista para estrenar su nuevo
nombre (Mila) y su talento de provocar el miedo. En el curso de
verano Mila tiene la oportunidad perfecta de hacerlo. Junto con
sus amigos del Club de Chipilines exploran el temor y a la vez
fortalecen sus lazos de amistad. Alemán Lascurain nace en la
Ciudad de México, tiene una amplia experiencia en el mundo
editorial y la literatura infantil. Recibe el Premio Antonio Robles
en 1988. Esta obra está ilustrada por Ixchel Estrada, graduada de
la Escuela de Diseño del Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes
(EDINBA).
Emily is eleven years old and she is ready to launch her new
name (Mila) and her talent of provoking fear. During the Summer
camp she has the perfect opportunity to do so. Along with her
friends from the Chipilines Club, she explores the fear and at the
same time strengthens their friendship bonds. Alemán Lascurain
is born in Mexico City, she has a wide experience in the editorial
world and in children’s literature. She receives the Antonio

12. Esta novela juvenil, que vendió más de un millón de copias y se
publicó en más de 10 idiomas, se trata de un adolescente de
nombre Juan, a quien su madre le arruinó sus vacaciones
cuando ante una crisis familiar lo mandó a vivir temporalmente a
la casa de su tío Tito. Su tío es un ser excéntrico y lector
empedernido, cuya casa es un laberinto de libros que parecen
tener vida propia. Juan se encuentra con un libro rebelde, el
Libro Salvaje, que no quiere que nadie lo lea y guarda en sus
páginas un secreto escurridizo.
Esta historia habla sobre la relación mágica del lector con los
libros, sobre cómo acompañan a las personas en distintas
épocas de su vida e incluso se convierten en cómplices del
primer amor. El periodista Juan Villoro es uno de los escritores
más relevantes de la literatura mexicana.

13. This youth literature novel, which sold more than a million copies
and was published in over 10 languages, tells the story about an
adolescent named John, to whom his mother ruins his vacations
when, faced by family crisis, she sends him to temporarily live in
his uncle’s Tito house. His uncle is an eccentric and inveterate
reader, whose house is a labyrinth of books that seem to have a
life of their own. John finds a rebel book, the Wild Book, which
doesn’t want to be read and keeps an elusive secret amongst its
pages.
This story talks about the magic relationship between the reader
and the books, about how they accompany people at different
stages of their lives and even become accomplices of their first
love. Journalist Juan Villoro is one of the most relevant writers in
Mexican literature.
Esta historia narra cómo Margot, una niña que vive en un
basurero, se convierte en superheroína. Su papá es pepenador y
ambos buscan objetos para sobrevivir. Su vida es bastante
precaria, pero ella encuentra el modo de ser una niña normal,
que se divierte y ama las películas. Hasta que un día, unos
hombres de negro llegan a su casa y le piden que lleve a cabo
ciertas misiones para salvar a la humanidad, las cuales cumple
sin cuestionarlos.

14. A través de divertidas aventuras, este libro habla de la enorme
fortaleza de los niños (incluso en las situaciones más difíciles) y
sobre cómo Margot, a través de acciones cotidianas, ayuda a sus
amigos y a su comunidad. Malpica es un músico, dramaturgo y
novelista mexicano. Este título ganó los premios Barco de vapor,
Gran Angular, Novela Breve Rosario Castellanos y el Premio
Nacional de Literatura Infantil y Juvenil Castillo de la Lectura.
This story narrates how Margot, a girl who lives at a dump,
becomes a heroine. Her dad is a waste picker and both search for
objects in order to survive. Her life is very precarious, but she
finds a way to be a normal kid, who has fun and loves films. Until
one day, some men in black arrive at her home and ask her to
perform certain missions to save humanity, which she does
without questioning them.
Amid fun adventures, this book talks about the enormous
strength that children possess (even in the most difficult
situations), and how Margot, through daily actions, helps her
friends and her community. Malpica is a Mexican musician,
playwright, and novelist. This title was awarded the Barco de
Vapor, Gran Angular, Novela Breve Rosario Castellanos, and the
Children’s and Juvenile Literature National Prize Castillo de la
Lectura distinctions.

15. Esta es una historia que retrata la dura realidad de miles de
personas migrantes que viajan desde los países de América
Central hacia Estados Unidos de América en busca de mejores
oportunidades. Irene, una huérfana de diez años, es la valiente
protagonista salvadoreña que se ve obligada a madurar y a
sortear todo tipo de obstáculos en su viaje hacia Denver. En el
camino la acompaña Diane, quien fue alejada de su propia familia
y busca reencontrarse con ella, y Xóchil, “una mujer de mala
vida” que en el camino encuentra el sentido de su existencia.
La novela toca la pobreza, la injusticia, la discriminación, la
violencia y el acoso. Al mismo tiempo, con una excelente prosa y
un sutil sentido del humor, también pone de manifiesto la
esperanza, la amistad, la resiliencia y la solidaridad. Quezadas
se graduó de la Escuela de Escritores de la Sogem y con este
libro ganó el Premio Hispanoamericano Castillo de literatura
infantil y juvenil 2019.
This is a story that portrays the harsh reality of thousands of
migrants who travel from Central American countries to the
United States of America in search of better opportunities. Irene,
a ten-year-old orphan, is the brave Salvadoran protagonist who is
forced to mature and overcome all kinds of obstacles on her
journey to Denver. Along the way she is accompanied by Diane,
who was estranged from her own family and seeks to reconnect
with them, and Xóchil, a “call girl”, who on the way finds the
meaning of her existence.
The novel touches on poverty, injustice, discrimination, violence,
and harassment. At the same time, with excellent prose and a
subtle sense of humor, he also brings out hope, friendship,

16. resilience, and solidarity. Quezada graduated from the Sogem
School of Writers and with this book he won the Castillo
Hispanoamericano Award for children’s and youth literature
2019.
Esta novela ocurre en el México contemporáneo y exhibe las
diferencias entre clases sociales de manera muy cruda. Narra de
forma muy cinematográfica la historia violenta de tres
personajes distintos: una bailarina exitosa e influyente, un
asesino condenado a 50 años de cárcel y un padre de familia
abusivo. Las tres historias se entrelazan y describen situaciones
límite en un país dividido. El texto está construido con un
lenguaje muy coloquial y muestra la jerga de la zona del norte del
país, lo cual sumerge al lector en un mundo muy cercano a la
realidad.
Arriaga es un exitoso mexicano, reconocido a nivel mundial por
su trabajo literario y cinematográfico como guionista, productor

17. y director. Conquistó el Premio Alfaguara 2020 con esta
publicación y en el pasado ganó el Premio Bafta a mejor guión
original por su película Babel. Entre sus películas más populares
se encuentran 21 Gramos y Amores Perros.
This novel takes place in contemporary Mexico and exhibits the
differences between social classes in a very stark way. It narrates
in a cinematographic manner the violent history of three different
characters: a successful and influential dancer, a murderer
sentenced to 50 years in prison, and an abusive family man. The
three stories intertwine and describe extreme situations in a
divided country. The text is constructed with a very colloquial
language and shows the slang of the northern part of the
country, which immerses the reader in a world almost too close
to reality.
Arriaga is a successful Mexican, recognized worldwide for his
literary and cinematographic work as a screenwriter, producer,
and director. He won the 2020 Alfaguara Prize with this
publication and, in the past, he won the Bafta Prize for best
original screenplay for his film Babel. Among his most popular
films are 21 Grams and Amores Perros.

18. El momento histórico donde ocurre esta ficción es la Revolución
Mexicana y relata la vida de una familia acomodada que se
dedica al cultivo en el estado de Nuevo León. La nana de la
familia, una sabia mujer, un día escucha el llanto de un bebé y

emociones y con tintes de realismo mágico.
Segovia es una galardonada escritora, periodista y tallerista
mexicana. El Murmullo de las Abejas, fue de los libros más
vendidos de México e Hispanoamérica durante el 2015.
The Mexican Revolution is the historical moment where this
fiction occurs, and it tells the life of a wealthy family that is
dedicated to farming in the state of Nuevo León. The nanny, a
wise woman, one day hears a baby crying and decides to leave
her rest to climb the mountain and discover where the cry comes
from. When she returned, she was carrying a child on one arm
and a honeycomb on the other. The little one abandoned was
quite strange, he had a physical defect and a swarm of bees that
covered his face like a cloak, which would always accompany
him. The family decided to adopt him and the boy was baptized
as Simonopio, who would unexpectedly and almost
