1. Día de la Tierra – Earth Day
El Día de la Tierra se celebra anualmente el 22 de abril alrededor del
mundo con actividades ecológicas y reflexiones que buscan crear
conciencia acerca del cuidado de nuestro planeta para que los
gobiernos, las organizaciones y los ciudadanos asuman su
responsabilidad frente al cuidado del medio ambiente.
Earth Day is celebrated annually around the world on the 22nd of April
with ecological activities and deliberations that aim to create
conscience about caring for our planet, so that governments,
organizations, and citizens assume their responsibility for facing
environmental care.

3. En la década de los sesenta los ciudadanos estadounidenses estaban
inconformes con el daño notorio al medio ambiente: derrames de
petróleo, smog y contaminación de ríos y mares. En varias ciudades
no se podía mirar a través de la contaminación y el gobierno no daba
importancia al problema. Gaylord Nelson, candidato a senador por el
estado de Wisconsin, luchaba en ese entonces a favor del medio
ambiente y para involucrar a más gente con la causa se inspiró en las
manifestaciones en contra de la guerra de Vietnam.
Así, Gaylord Nelson se alió con el activista Denis Hayes y el 22 de
abril de 1970 instauraron el Día de la Tierra para convocar a una gran
manifestación. Reunieron a más de 20 millones de personas en las
calles de Estados Unidos de Norteamérica para protestar contra el
daño notorio al medio ambiente. Fue tal el alcance de su movimiento,
que el 2 de diciembre del mismo año se creó La Agencia de
Protección Medioambiental de Estados Unidos.
Durante los años siguientes, grupos independientes que luchaban por
causas ecológicas se unieron al movimiento y, tras algunas victorias
en políticas públicas ambientales, en 1990 varios líderes se sumaron
para llevarlo a nivel internacional. Se convirtió en un colectivo

4. ambiental que actúa de manera ininterrumpida durante todo el año y
al que hasta ahora se han adherido más de 192 países.
El Día de la Tierra se sigue celebrando en la misma fecha con
actividades y estrategias muy bien definidas a nivel mundial, las
cuales tienen el objetivo de educar acerca del cuidado del medio
ambiente y mitigar el daño al planeta al involucrar a los ciudadanos de
todo el mundo.
Muchos logros ambientales han sucedido este día, como la firma del
Tratado de París que busca mantener el calentamiento global por
debajo de 2 °C. Su página web oficial, earthday.org, brinda
herramientas y pautas de acción para todas las partes involucradas.
In the 1960s, American citizens were unhappy with the notorious
damage to the environment: oil spills, smog, and pollution of rivers
and seas. In several cities, you could barely see through the pollution
and the government did not seem to care about the problem. Gaylord
Nelson, a candidate for senator from the state of Wisconsin, was
fighting for the environment at the time and to get more people
involved with the cause. He was inspired by the demonstrations
against the Vietnam War.
Thus, Gaylord Nelson allied with the activist Denis Hayes and on April
22nd of 1970 they established Earth Day to summon a large
demonstration. They gathered more than 20 million people on the
streets of the United States of America to protest against the notorious
damage to the environment. The scope of his movement was such
that, on December 2nd of the same year, the United States
Environmental Protection Agency was created.

5. During the following years, independent groups that fought for
ecological causes joined the movement and, after some victories in
environmental public policies, in 1990 several leaders fully engaged to
take it internationally. It became an environmental collective that acts
without interruption throughout the year and to which more than 192
countries have adhered so far.
Earth Day is still celebrated on the same date with well-defined
activities and strategies worldwide, which have the objective of
educating about caring for the environment and mitigating the damage
to the planet by involving citizens from all over the world.
Many environmental achievements have happened to this day, such
as the signing of the Treaty of Paris that seeks to keep global warming
below 2 °C. Its official website, earthday.org, provides tools and action

El lema del año 2021 es “restaurar nuestra Tierra”. Se enfatizará la
importancia de la diversidad biológica como indicador de salud del
planeta, pues la variedad de especies dificulta la rápida propagación
de los patógenos. Más de un millón de especies están en peligro de

6. extinción y el calentamiento global que también las afecta, está en su
momento más álgido.
Durante el 20, 21 y 22 de abril, se reunirán de forma presencial y
digital activistas, artistas, jóvenes y líderes internacionales para
reflexionar sobre el cambio climático, la importancia de la educación
ambiental, la agricultura sostenible y la justicia climática; todo esto
para tomar acciones concretas que disminuyan la temperatura
mundial a través de medidas tecnológicas, políticas públicas y
cambios de comportamiento.
The motto for 2021 is “restore our Earth.” The importance of biological
diversity as an indicator of the planet’s health will be emphasized,
since the variety of species hinders the rapid spread of pathogens.
More than a million species are in danger of extinction and the global
warming that also affects them is at its peak.
During April 20, 21 and 22, activists, artists, young and international
leaders will meet in person and digitally to reflect on climate change,
the importance of environmental education, sustainable agriculture,
and climate justice; all this to take concrete actions that reduce the
world temperature through technological measures, public policies,
and behavior changes.

7. 1. En cuanto a la alimentación, apoyar el consumo local, la
agricultura orgánica y biodinámica; disminuir la ingesta de carne
roja y alimentos procesados; unirse al movimiento Lunes sin
carne; y donar a bancos de alimentos.
2. Para optimizar el transporte, caminar o usar bicicleta, compartir
el uso del automóvil, planear los viajes y utilizar transporte
público impulsado por energías renovables.
3. Para minimizar tus residuos, clasificar los residuos del hogar y
lugar de trabajo; favorecer el reciclaje; emplear productos de
limpieza, cuidado personal y cosméticos libres de tóxicos; y
reducir el consumo de plásticos, especialmente los de un solo
uso.
4. Para hacer tu hogar más ahorrativo, colocar economizadores de
agua; instalar paneles solares o poner focos ahorradores; usar
ropa y artículos de segunda mano; reutilizar materiales y
objetos; y hacer compras más conscientes.
5. Para contribuir a un mundo más verde, elaborar una composta;
mantener un huerto urbano; sembrar árboles y variedad de
flores que atraigan insectos polinizadores; y participar en
campañas de reforestación.

1. Regarding food, support local production, organic and
biodynamic agriculture; decrease the intake of red meat and
processed foods; join the Meatless Monday movement; and
donate to food banks.
2. To optimize transportation, walk or cycle, carpool, plan trips, and
use public transportation powered by renewable energy.
3. To minimize your waste, classify household and workplace waste
and think of ways you can reduce it; promote recycling; use
non-toxic cleaning, personal care, and cosmetic products; and
reduce the consumption of plastics, especially single-use ones.
4. To economize at home, install water savers; install solar panels
or energy-saving lights; use second-hand clothing and items;
reuse materials and objects; and make more conscious
purchases.
5. To contribute to a greener world, compost; maintain an urban
garden; plant trees and a variety of flowers that attract pollinating
insects; and participate in reforestation campaigns.

9. A pesar de que los pueblos autóctonos son una minoría, en sus
territorios y bajo sus cuidados, está gran parte de la biodiversidad del
planeta y esto incluye a los bosques templados y los bosques
tropicales que son cruciales para reducir las emisiones de carbono.
Las comunidades indígenas de América Latina están sumamente
vinculadas con la naturaleza porque, de acuerdo con su cosmovisión,
se asumen como parte de ella y por ende usan sus recursos de
manera respetuosa. Por ejemplo, cultivan con técnicas sostenibles y
sus conocimientos agrarios, astronómicos y medioambientales son
todo un legado para poder mitigar el daño al planeta.
Las poblaciones nativas de México han desarrollado técnicas
agrícolas que se adaptan a entornos extremos y que respetan el
equilibrio natural, como las chinampas del lago de Xochimilco en la
Ciudad de México, que son una especie de “parcelas de cultivo
flotantes”. Las chinampas conservan técnicas campesinas
prehispánicas que se transmitieron de forma oral por generaciones.
Este tipo de cultivo ancestral actualmente abarca 2,000 hectáreas con
hortalizas y flores y apoya el cuidado de la biodiversidad e impulsa la
economía local.

10. Even though autochthon peoples are a minority, in their territories and
under their care, there is a large part of the planet’s biodiversity and
these include temperate forests and tropical forests that are crucial to
reducing carbon emissions.
The indigenous communities of Latin America are highly linked with
nature because, according to their worldview, they assume
themselves as part of it and therefore use its resources in a respectful
manner. For example, they cultivate with sustainable techniques and
their agricultural, astronomical, and environmental knowledge is a
legacy to mitigate the damage already done to the planet.
The native populations of Mexico have developed agricultural
techniques that adapt to extreme environments and that respect the
natural balance, such as the chinampas of Lake Xochimilco in Mexico
City, which are a kind of “floating farm plots”. The chinampas preserve
pre-Hispanic peasant techniques that were transmitted orally for
generations. This type of ancestral cultivation currently covers 2,000
hectares with vegetables and flowers and supports biodiversity care
and boosts the local economy.

11. Existe una gran variedad de rituales en América Latina que veneran a
la Madre Tierra, pues los pueblos originarios mantienen una fuerte
conexión ancestral con la Naturaleza y sus ciclos. Incluso desde sus
territorios han surgido muchos activistas medioambientales y hoy en
día la región de América Latina participa en la celebración ecológica
internacional del Día de la Tierra.
There is a great variety of rituals in Latin America that venerate
Mother Earth, as the original peoples maintain a strong ancestral
connection with Nature and its cycles. Even from their territories,
many environmental activists have emerged and today the Latin
American region participates in the international ecological celebration
of Earth Day.
Nemonte Nenquimo es líder de los Waraoni y defensora de los
derechos indígenas. La revista Time la nombró una de las personas
más influyentes del mundo en 2020 y es la ganadora del Premio
Campeones de la Tierra 2020 del Programa de las Naciones Unidas
para el Medio Ambiente (PNUMA). Nenquimo llevó a tribunales el
abuso que sufrió la comunidad Waorani, cuando el gobierno de
Ecuador les quitó grandes extensiones del bosque de la Amazonía
para cederlas a empresas petroleras. Su victoria logró que 180,000
hectáreas amazónicas fueran protegidas.

12. “Si dejamos que la Amazonía se destruya poco a poco, por supuesto,
eso nos afecta como pueblos indígenas, pero también afectará a
todos por el cambio climático. Nuestra lucha es por toda la humanidad
porque todos vivimos conectados a la Tierra”. Nemonte Nenquimo,
activista ecuatoriana.
Nemonte Nenquimo is a leader of the Waraoni people and a defender
of indigenous rights. Time magazine named her one of the most
influential people in the world in 2020 and she is the winner of the
2020 Champions of the Earth Award from the United Nations
Environment Program (UNEP). Nenquimo took to court the abuse
suffered by the Waorani community, when the government of Ecuador
seized large tracts of the Amazon forest from them and ceded these to
oil companies. Her victory meant that 180,000 Amazonian hectares
were protected.

13. Autónoma de México. Colaboró en el informe titulado Hacer las
paces con la naturaleza un plan científico realizado con base en datos
obtenidos mediante evaluaciones ambientales y mundiales, para
abordar la triple emergencia del clima, la biodiversidad y la
contaminación.
Julia Carabias is the former Minister of the Environment of Mexico and
a member of the Faculty of Sciences of the National Autonomous
University of Mexico. She collaborated on the report entitled Making
Peace with Nature, a scientific plan based on data obtained through
environmental and global assessments, to address the triple
emergence of climate, biodiversity, and pollution.
Berta Zúñiga fue fundadora del Consejo Cívico de Organizaciones
Populares e Indígenas de Honduras (COPINH) y defendió los ríos de
Honduras contra proyectos hidroeléctricos, incluso ante el interés de
varios bancos internacionales. Su labor fue reconocida por el Premio
Goldman, considerado el mayor reconocimiento en el mundo para
activistas ambientales.

14. Berta Zúñiga was the founder of the Civic Council of Popular and
Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH) and defended the
rivers of Honduras against hydroelectric projects, even before the
interest of several international banks. His work was recognized by the
Goldman Prize, considered the highest recognition in the world for
environmental activists.

El joven peruano Max Hidalgo es inventor y creador el proyecto Yawa,
que consiste en una tecnología portátil, multifuncional y sostenible,
capaz de obtener hasta 300 litros de agua al día a partir de la
humedad y la neblina atmosféricas. Puedes verlo en su plática de

Young Peruvian Max Hidalgo is the inventor and creator of the Yawa
project, which consists of a portable, multifunctional, and sustainable
technology capable of obtaining up to 300 liters of water per day from
atmospheric humidity and mist. You can see it in his TEDxLima talk.

15. José Manuel Moller es un joven emprendedor, ingeniero comercial de
la Universidad Católica de Chile, que creó la empresa social Algramo,
la cual se enfoca en el comercio justo y el respeto a la naturaleza.
Inventó máquinas dispensadoras para ofrecer alimentos a granel. Sus
canales de distribución usan transporte eléctrico y sus máquinas
contenedores reusables e inteligentes, además de involucrar a
“tiendas de barrio” para llegar a las familias de bajos recursos. Este
modelo crea ahorro y motiva el consumo responsable.
José Manuel Moller is a young entrepreneur, a commercial engineer
from the Catholic University of Chile, who created the social enterprise
Algramo, which focuses on fair trade and respect for nature. He
invented vending machines to offer food in bulk. Its distribution
channels use electric transport, and its machines use reusable and
intelligent containers, in addition to involving “neighborhood stores” to
reach low-income families. This model creates savings and
encourages responsible consumption.

16. La Fundación Pro México Indígena trabaja con comunidades
mexicanas indígenas mazahuas, otomíes, tseltales, mayas,
mazatecas, chinantecas, purépechas y me’phaas. Su Modelo de
Desarrollo Integral Sustentable ha logrado que varias comunidades
superaran la pobreza extrema a través de iniciativas de salud,
educación, seguridad alimentaria, vivienda integral sustentable,
proyectos productivos, rescate de la cultura y cuidado del medio
ambiente.
Algunos de los proyectos que han implantado abarcan captación de
agua de lluvia, rescate y cuidado del medio ambiente con la
construcción de presas, piedra acomodada para evitar erosión,
reforestaciones, invernaderos, módulos de abejas, huertos familiares,
capacitación para el aprovechamiento de los recursos naturales,
siembra de milpa y de árboles frutales, y viviendas ecológicas, entre
muchos otros.
The Pro Indigenous Mexico Foundation (Fundación Pro México
Indígena) works with indigenous Mazahua, Otomi, Tseltal, Mayan,
Mazatec, Chinantec, Purépecha and Me’phaas communities. Its
Sustainable Comprehensive Development Model has succeeded in
helping several communities overcome extreme poverty through
health, education, food security, comprehensive sustainable housing,
productive projects, rescuing culture, and caring for the environment.

17. Some of the projects that they have implemented include rainwater
harvesting, rescue and care of the environment with the construction
of dams, accommodated stone to prevent erosion, reforestation,
greenhouses, bee modules, family gardens, training for the use of
natural resources, planting cornfields and fruit trees, and ecological
housing, among many others.
