For habits in the past that are not true now.
Ex.: I used to go out every day when I was younger.
Negative: “didn’t use to”
Ex.: I didn’t use to study very much at school.
Questions: “did you use to…?”
Ex.: Did you use to smoke before?
IMPORTANT: For habits in the present, use a frequency
adverb like usually, “used to” is only for the past:
Ex.: I usually do the English homework
3. Would
For habitual actions in the past
Ex.: She would go out and drink with her friends
at the weekend.
4. Other expressions with used to
Be used to + V-ing:
Something you are accustomed to doing, you are
comfortable doing now:
Ex.: I’m used to working at night now.
Get used to + V-ing:
It’s the process of becoming accustomed to
something, you are not comfortable doing that yet:
Ex.: I’m still getting used to working at night.
