2. Dealing with Vascular Cognitive
Impairment & Mild Cognitive Impairment
• Mild cognitive impairment occurs when normal cognitive functioning is affected
to a certain degree. The changes that occur can be noticed by the individual or
by the family around him or her. In old people it can be known as age related
memory loss. Although the changes are quite noticeable, it does not affect the
person’s capability to function normally in society. However, in the case of
dementia, the changes are extremely serious and the person cannot go on with
life without having someone cater to his everyday needs. Since mild cognitive
impairment does not affect ones daily life, the individual does not go for
dementia diagnosis. But he or she must be careful since he or she has more risk
of getting dementia or neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease.
MCI can also occur when memory and stress related problems arise.

3. Dealing with Vascular Cognitive
Impairment & Mild Cognitive Impairment
• Memory and stress do have something to do with each other in the case of MCI.
When a person faces too many stressful situations, or has one extremely
stressful moment, it can cause small strokes, which affect certain parts in the
brain that are also related to normal memory function. This is why people who
lead stressful lives have more chances of developing MCI or even dementia. The
part in the brain associated with memory can be affected when a person has a
traumatic experience as well. If someone close to the individual dies or leaves
for good, the individual will start to feel depressed and cognitive changes take
place. Depression is said to be another cause of MCI in certain individuals. Age
related memory loss is almost the same as mild cognitive impairment, but when
MCI occurs in people under sixty, that’s when they need to get diagnosed for
Dementia treatment.

4. Dealing with Vascular Cognitive
Impairment & Mild Cognitive Impairment
• The symptoms of vascular cognitive impairment are quite noticeable. If an
individual forgets things more often, forgets important events, fails to keep up
with the thread of events in a movie or a book, starts finding it difficult to move
around familiar environments or feels like he or she is under a lot of pressure
while making a simple decision, then he or she is suffering from VCI. In case of
old people, the above symptoms can be associated with age related memory
loss. Depression, anxiety and apathy are also symptoms of MCI. Individuals with
mild cognitive impairment must visit a neurology clinic as soon as possible to
understand the extent of damage done to the brain and get advice on
preventative measures.
