Prólogo
Esta publicación es un compendio de los 57 años del Fondo de Becas de la Sociedad Interameri-
cana de Prensa, SIP, que incluye una selección de breves testimonios, recuerdos y semblanzas de
los ganadores.
El trabajo del Fondo de Becas complementa la defensa de la libertad de prensa. Por ese medio se
preparan periodistas para que tengan una formación sólida. Medios con periodistas con buena for-
mación ética y académica son aliados en la defensa de los principios de la SIP. Mientras la Comisión
de Libertad de Prensa denuncia e investiga los hechos, el Instituto de Prensa agrega formación y el
Fondo de Becas completa el proceso educativo de buenos periodistas.
Desde sus inicios, en 1954, el Fondo de Becas estuvo dirigido por visionarios del periodismo hemis-
férico. Su primer presidente fue William H. Cowles, seguido por Harold Fitzgerald, Robert U. Brown,
Rodolfo Junco de la Vega, Charles Scripps, Hugh Patterson. En épocas más recientes la presidencia de
la Junta que otorga y administra el programa de becas recayó en A. Roy Megarry, Alejandro Aguirre,
Jaime Mantilla, Paul Scripps, Jayme Sirotsky y Jorge Andres Saieh.
En poco más de medio siglo se han otorgado 360 becas a periodistas norteamericanos, latinoameri-
canos y caribeños. El programa fue creado y sigue funcionando como vía de doble sentido. Jóvenes
profesionales del Periodismo procedentes de Estados Unidos y Canadá estudian y trabajan durante
un año en un país de América Latina, mientras que los latinoamericanos o antillanos pasan un año
en una escuela universitaria de periodismo de Estados Unidos o Canadá.
Para recopilar las siguientes semblanzas hicimos gestiones con aquellos que mantienen aún contacto
con la SIP. A otros los buscamos y encontramos por todas partes del continente, incluso Europa. Va-
rios lamentablemente han fallecido y a unos cuantos simplemente no los pudimos ubicar.
Sus breves relatos son interesantes. Un buen puñado de ellos cuenta cómo la beca les hizo cambiar
la vida. Para otros fue un trampolín para defender con más bríos la libertad de prensa. Y en otros, en
fin, la beca les abrió posibilidades profesionales, los hizo bilingües, etc.
Este sencillo libro de nostalgia e historias personales, también resume a los principales contribuyen-
tes, fundaciones, publicaciones y personas naturales que han apoyado al Fondo de Becas desde sus
inicios, cuyos valiosos y desinteresados aportes consiguieron que esto fuera realidad.
El Fondo de Becas es otro de los puntales que lleva adelante la SIP en su lucha interminable por
su principio central. Muchas gracias a quienes permiten este esfuerzo y a los que han conseguido
el galardón.

Introduction
This book contains a collection of brief profiles and sketches by winners selected from the Inter
American Press Association (IAPA) Scholarship Fund’s fifty-seven year history.
The Fund’s work complements the organization’s mission of defending press freedom. Through it
journalists are provided a solid foundation. Media journalists with worthy ethical and academic prin-
ciples become allies in the defense of IAPA principles. While the Press Freedom Committee reports
and investigates the facts, the Press Institute trains and the Scholarship Fund completes the educa-
tional process in the preparation of good journalists.
Since its inception in 1954 the Scholarship Fund has been led by visionaries from the hemisphere’s
realm of journalists. First president William H. Cowles was followed by Harold Fitzgerald, Robert U.
Brown, Rodolfo Junco de la Vega, Charles Scripps and Hugh Patterson. More recently the Board that
awards and manages the scholarship program has been chaired by A. Roy Megarry, Alejandro Agu-
irre, Jaime Mantilla, Paul Scripps, Jayme Sirotsky and Jorge Andres Saieh.
Just over half a century, 360 scholarships have been awarded to North Americans, Latin Americans
and Caribbeans. The program was created and continues to operate as a two-way street: young
journalists from the United States and Canada study and work for a year in a Latin American coun-
try, while Latin Americans or Caribbeans spend a year in a Journalism School in the United States or
Canada.
To compile the following selections we started by re-connecting with those who are still in contact
with the IAPA. Others we searched for and located around the world, including in Europe. Some,
sadly, have died and a few simply could not be located.
Their brief stories are interesting. A good number relate how the grant changed their lives. For oth-
ers it was a springboard to a more vigorous defense of press freedom. And for still others, the grant
opened career opportunities, offered the opportunity to become bilingual, and more.
This simple collection of memoirs and personal stories also recognizes the major contributors, foun-
dations, publications and individuals that have supported the Scholarship Fund since its inception,
whose valuable and selfless contributions turned this into reality.
The Scholarship Fund is one of the mainstays that carry the IAPA forward in its ongoing battle in
defense of its central mission. Thank you very much to those who make this effort possible and to
those who have achieved the award.

¿Cómo trabaja el
Fondo de Becas?
La Junta de Gobernadores del Fondo de Becas de la SIP, concede anualmente en marzo/abril, duran-
te la Reunión de Medio Año de la institución, un determinado número de becas para que jóvenes
periodistas de las Américas asistan durante un año escolar completo al perfeccionamiento de su
profesión en una Universidad reconocida en el continente. El número de becarios se resuelve con-
forme el monto de las contribuciones voluntarias otorgadas para ello. En Estados Unidos como en
casi todos los países de la región, las donaciones al programa de becas son deducibles de impuestos.
En abril de 2011 se concedieron cuatro becas, de veinte mil dólares cada una: a una periodista nor-
teamericana y tres para reporteros latinoamericanos. En el caso de estos últimos, la beca además les
otorga los pasajes aéreos desde y hasta su país de origen. La decisión para elegir entre los muchos
postulantes, radica en el cumplimiento de los requisitos básicos y, principalmente, el nivel de prepa-
ración académica y experiencia.
Las postulaciones a las becas SIP deberán hacerse entre el 15 de octubre y el 31 de enero siguien-
te. Los favorecidos tendrán hasta el 1* de septiembre del año próximo para ser aceptados en una
universidad donde cumplirán su posgrado en Periodismo. Los interesados deben ser periodistas
graduados o por graduarse, tener entre 21 y 35 años de edad, hablar perfectamente el idioma del
país donde concurrirán al estudio y llenar un formulario cumpliendo algunas certificaciones, con-
forme puede consultarse en la página www.sipiapa.org, haciendo clic en Becas SIP. Para el caso
de periodistas de EEUU y/o Canadá, requerirán dominio del español o portugués, según el país que
eligieren. Los periodistas latinoamericanos o del Caribe, deberán saber inglés, o francés si desean
estudiar en Canadá.
Es requisito indispensable enviar toda la documentación necesaria que respalde la postulación.
Caso contrario, la solicitud no es considerada.

How the Scholarship
Fund Works?
During the IAPA Midyear Meeting in March/April, the Scholarship Fund’s Board of Governors awards
a number of scholarships so that young journalists from throughout the Americas can perfect their
professional skills by attending a full school year in a recognized university in the Americas. The num-
ber of awards is determined by the amount of voluntary contributions received. In the United States
and in almost all other countries donations to the scholarship program are tax deductible.
In April 2011, four twenty-thousand dollar scholarships were awarded, one to an American journalist
and three to Latin American reporters. In the latter cases the grant also covers air fare to and from
their home countries. Selections are made from among the many applicants based on compliance
with the basic requirements and, primarily, the level of academic preparation and experience.
Applications must be received between October 15th and the following January 31st. Winners have
until September 1st to be accepted by a university graduate program in journalism. Interested can-
didates should be journalism graduates or close to graduation, between 21 and 35 years of age,
fluent in the language of the country where they will study, and fill out an application that requests
specific certifications. The process and guidelines can be found at www.sipiapa.org by clicking on
IAPA Scholarship. Journalists in the U.S. and/or Canada must be fluent in Spanish or Portuguese, de-
pending on the destination country of choice. Latin American or Caribbean journalists should know
English, or French if they wish to study in Canada.
It is required that all supporting documentation be sent with the application. Otherwise the applica-
tion will not be considered.

Recuerdos de una ex Tutora
Zulay Domínguez Chirinos fue la responsable de coordinar y dirigir el Fondo de Becas de la
SIP entre 1972 y 2010. Este es su recuerdo de esa época:
Los fundadores del Fondo de Becas de la SIP aspiraron a crear un programa que contribuyera al
crecimiento profesional de los periodistas de las Américas, en donde reportajes imparciales y análisis
reflexivos de noticias fortalecieran la democracia, sus propios periódicos y la libertad de prensa en
todo lugar. Durante mis 38 años de servicio a la SIP, tuve el privilegio de ver a ese sueño hecho reali-
dad. En 1972, el Gerente General de la SIP, Jimmy Canel, me dio la tutela de cientos de becarios de
la SIP durante su año escolar para que ellos consolidaran los cimientos de sus carreras y mejoraran la
calidad del periodismo en el hemisferio occidental.
El apoyo incondicional de The Miami Herald, en donde yo era Miembro de la Junta Editorial, me per-
mitió funcionar como Directora del Fondo de Becas y ser testigo de la perseverancia y la sabiduría de
estos jóvenes periodistas que aspiran a ir más allá de sus fronteras, a explorar ideas innovadoras y a
alcanzar estudios de posgrado en periodismo. Ellos dejan la seguridad de sus hogares, e incluso tra-
bajos buenos, para aventurarse a un año de clases exigentes y de condiciones difíciles, convencidos
de que un futuro próspero les espera y que la SIP apoya sus metas.
Como embajadores de la SIP, los becarios se adaptan hábilmente a su nuevo ambiente e inyectan en
él ideas valiosas de sus propias culturas, convirtiéndose así en agentes de cambio productivo tanto en
los países en donde están estudiando como en los suyos propios. Estos reporteros, editores y fotó-
grafos – multilingües, multiculturales y del más alto nivel de ética y desarrollo profesional – elevan la
calidad de las salas de redacción de las Américas y el bienestar de sus comunidades.
Me siento honrada por haber sido una parte integral del proceso de inversión en jóvenes periodistas y
el haber obtenido la más alta calidad profesional en retorno. Mientras haya becarios y ex-becarios de
la SIP girando por el mundo, prevalecerán sin duda los valores democráticos, la integridad periodística
y la libertad de prensa.

Recollections of a former Mentor
Zulay Domínguez Chirinos coordinated and directed the IAPA Scholarship Fund from 1972
to 2010. This is her recollection of those years:
The founders of the IAPA Scholarship Fund envisioned a program that would contribute to the pro-
fessional growth of journalists throughout the Americas, where impartial reporting and thoughtful
news analysis would strengthen democracy, their home newspapers and press freedom everywhere.
During my 38 years of service to the IAPA, I had the privilege of witnessing that dream come true. In
1972, IAPA General Manager Jimmy Canel entrusted me with shepherding hundreds of IAPA scholars
through a most challenging year of studies, which would solidify the foundation of their careers and
ensure the betterment of journalism in the Western Hemisphere.
The unwavering support of The Miami Herald, where I was an Editorial Board Member, enabled me
to fulfill my duties as IAPA Scholarship Fund Director and be privy of the perseverance and wisdom
of these young journalists, who aspire to go beyond their own borders, explore innovative ideas and
pursue post-graduate studies in journalism. They leave the security of home, and even good jobs, to
venture into a year of demanding classes and challenging conditions – convinced that a better future
awaits them and confident that the IAPA supports their goals.
As IAPA ambassadors, scholars adapt quickly to their new environs and inject into it invaluable no-
tions of their own cultures, thus becoming productive agents of change in the countries of their
chosen studies as well as in their own countries. These multilingual, multicultural reporters, editors
and photographers, of the highest ethical and professional standards, greatly improve the quality of
newsrooms across the Americas and the wellbeing of their communities.
I am honored to have been an integral part of the process of investing in outstanding young journal-
ists and garnering top-quality news professionals. For as long as current and former IAPA scholars
roam the world, democratic values, journalistic integrity and freedom of the press will prevail.
