2. 1st CALL FOR PAPERS
“IMPROVING EDUCATION THROUGH RESEARCH”
the 37th
Scottish Educational Research Association Conference
Wednesday 21 – Friday 23 November, 2012
Ayr Campus, University of the West of Scotland
The 37th annual conference of the Scottish Educational Research Association, SERA, is an opportunity
to reflect on the importance of research to education practices, in terms of debate, investigation
and improvement.
Papers which address the overarching theme of “Improving Education through Research” are
invited. Poster submissions, as well as proposals for symposia and workshops are also encouraged.
SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS
Individual papers & posters
Abstract proposals of up to 250 words should be submitted using our online form at:
www.seraconference.co.uk. You will be asked whether you prefer to give a paper or poster
presentation. You will also be asked to provide a title, and keywords.
Accepted paper presentations will be given 20 minutes in which to deliver their paper, followed by
10 minutes of discussion.
Accepted poster presentations will be asked to create a large-scale poster presenting their research.
These will be displayed throughout the conference, and there will be a dedicated 1 hour poster
presentation session. There will also be a poster prize awarded to one outstanding poster.
Symposia & Workshops
Proposals for symposia or workshops should be submitted using our online form at:
www.seraconference.co.uk. You will be asked to provide a title, and keywords. You will also need to
supply: a contact person and an outline of up to 250 words describing the purpose of symposium or
workshop.
Symposia will need to provide abstracts of up to 250 words for each paper to be included, as well as
the names of a chairperson, and discussant to offer a critique and/or summary of the symposium as
a whole.
Workshops will need to clarify what activities will be run and provide names for faciliators. These
workshops will likely fall into two possible categories - those focusing on developing specific
'research methods' and those focusing on particular 'theoretical perspectives'. Examples might
include sessions on 'working with visual data' or 'working with Foucault.'
A symposium or workshop can last either 1 or 1.5 hours and the intended duration should be clearly
indicated on your proposal. It is a planned event and a contact person must act as a link between
the conference organisers and other contributors.
