Today’s businesses are asking IT to develop thousands of new applications and services every year. And, with the advent of social and mobile apps and big data analytics, the demands on IT are bigger than ever. But IT budgets and resources aren't growing, and traditional data centers and architectures aren ’t flexible enough to deliver. A nd when IT can ’t deliver fast or cheaply enough, business units turn to public clouds to get what they want, when they want it, within their budget. In fact, a recent Gartner study shows that, by 2015, 35% of IT spend will be directed outside of the IT department.* The result: An ever-growing IT service delivery gap and the loss of IT control and governance that could put the business at risk. Gartner: Top Predictions for IT Organizations and Users for 2013 and Beyond
IT departments want to regain control and meet business demands by quickly and efficiently delivering cloud capabilities. A recent IDC study points to this trend, stating 69% of IT leaders said they are developing a cloud strategy. But as IT adopts cloud services, it must avoid creating new infrastructure silos, additional hybrid management complexity and cost. A key challenge is determining how to maintain existing IT services and SLAs on traditional infrastructures while transitioning into being a broker and provider of new IT services.
It's a fact: IT services today require a mix of resources across physical, virtual, private, and public cloud infrastructures. And IT organizations must transition into brokers and providers of hybrid IT services. Most IT will be, or already is, hybrid.
Many of the cloud technologies IT needs--especially the ones the public cloud providers have used--have come from open source technologies. Open source technologies support the innovation that allows public cloud providers to build very agile, low cost clouds. A recent IDC survey showed 72% of respondents said “open” was a key consideration for their cloud strategy.* There is no doubt: The future of IT is being led by open source technology. * *IDC 2012 Cloud System Software Survey
Why does open technology matter in cloud computing? It gives you: Interoperability so you can develop and run a diverse set of applications and business services across infrastructures based on a variety of technologies, billing models, and operational approaches Portability so you can move applications and data to the in-house or external provider that makes the most sense for reasons of cost, control, compliance, or operational preference Access to the greatest pool of innovation--wherever that innovation is happening Agility to respond to the needs of modern business and the demand for more dynamic approaches to IT and applications Choice without lock-in to any single vendor’s technology stack or business model
Only an open solution lets you run your applications and workloads on a variety of infrastructure platforms and develop applications with the tools that are appropriate for your business. A truly open solution is the only path to achieving true hybrid IT.
Red Hat is right in the center of open innovation. In fact, we staked our business on the future of open innovation, and became the first $1 billion open source company. We have more than a decade of experience at turning open, community-driven projects into enterprise-class, scalable products and technologies. Unlike other vendors that only work on one piece of the open cloud puzzle, Red Hat works to deliver open solutions across the entire cloud ecosystem.
And with an open, hybrid approach to cloud computing, you can avoid creating new silos of computing, fragmented architectures, and management complexities.
