people together and allows
users to communicate and
interact with others when it
may be difficult to
communicate otherwise. The
internet puts the globe at our
fingertips 24 hours a day.
Social networking allows
users day-to-day lives to be
reflected online and interact
with friends,family,
coworkers, their favorite
media personalities, and
more. No longer is physical

A number of burglaries throughout
the world have been linked to
Facebook “status updates” People
become so comfortable posting
details of their lives online, but
don’t realize they are also notifying
criminals of their whereabouts,
most importantly that their house is
empty. Facebook and Foursquare
both have applications that allow
users to “check-in” to locations.
Foursquare is most popular in
large cities and based in New York
City, but is gaining popularity.
“Checking-in” to a location or
posting where you will be at a
specific time is offering thieves an
open invitation to raid your home.

Scams
(Sketch screen here noting color, place, size of graphics if any)
Narration:
Scams have been a plaguing
users of Social Networking sites
since their inception, and
scammers are getting more
sophisticated. Recent scams
include clicking on a link to see a
video of a shocking event, only to
be prompted with further
instructions to “like” a page to see
the image. This allows scammers
to record your information and post
the same enticing link for your
friends on your profile. Anytime
Facebook users add an application
to their profile, for a game or other
activity, they are authorizing the
developers of that application to
view and distribute information
they post on the site, such as age,
gender, photos, information about
friends, and even friends photos.

Narration:
Social Networking has been
linked to violent crime such
as rape, murder, physical
and cyber-stalking and
bullying, which we've seen in
recent news can have dire
consequences. Several
teens and young adults have
committed suicide or lashed
out violently at others due to
activities on Social
Networking sites that have
caused great emotional
stress and ultimately
physical harm.

Had a bad day at work or
school? Think twice about
posting a rant about it on
your profile page.
Employers are monitoring
their employees activity
online. They know how long
you're online and what
you're reading/posting. A
simple, “I'm so bored at
work.” can mean termination
or strong consequences.
Have some not so flattering
pictures or posts on your
page? Employers and
schools are screening
applicants and current
students and employees
based on their activity and
images they project on
social networking sites.
