Kuala Lumpur is an Asian tiger that roars: in almost 150 years, it has grown from nothing to
a modern, bustling city. Take in its high-flying triumphs from the viewing deck of the world's
tallest building, and then dive down to explore its more traditional culture in the back lanes of
Chinatown.
It's a modern Asian city of gleaming skyscrapers, but it retains much of the local colour that

When to Visit:
KL is hot and humid almost all the time. Although there is rain through the year, March
to April and September to November are the wettest months. KL's wide ethnic diversity
means that celebrations of one kind or another are usually going on somewhere around
the city; these can make transport more crowded than usual. Public holidays are a
surprisingly good time to be around, as most locals head for the beaches and hills. In
more liberal KL, Ramadan doesn't pose the same 'where to eat?' problems that affect the
more devout Muslim areas on the east coast.

3. Orientation
Malaysia is divided into two regions - Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia - with
Kuala Lumpur in Selangor province near the west coast of the peninsula. The
traditional heart of the city is Merdeka Square, easily spotted because of the 95m
(312ft) flag pole - reputedly the world's tallest. KL is a relatively easy city to navigate,
with major north-south thoroughfares assisting in the speedy movement of people. At
peak hour, however, the city resembles most other industrialised cities in the world, and
the air - already dripping with humidity - gets thick with smog. Travelling around the
city on foot can be a frustrating experience. New multi-lane highways and overhead
bridges divide the city with little thought to pedestrian traffic.
Southeast of Merdeka Square, the banking district merges into hectic Chinatown, where
travellers can find a wealth of accommodation and restaurant options. Due south of the
square, past the main post office, is the historic KL train station, while further west is
the 'green belt', where you'll find the Lake Gardens, National Museum and Monument
and the Malaysian Parliament.
Southeast of the old KL station is KL Sentral (Central Station), the new hub of
Malaysia's national railway system. Puduraya bus station is on the eastern edge of
Chinatown. The international airport, KLIA, is located some 75km (47mi) south of the
city centre.
Puduraya is between Chinatown and the Golden Triangle, KL's premier business,
shopping and entertainment district. Crowded with mid-range and luxury hotels, the
Golden Triangle has long since expanded from its original boundaries of Jln Imbi, Jln
Raja Chulan and Jln Sultan Ismail and now stretches north to the Kuala Lumpur City
Centre (KLCC) development anchored by the Petronas Towers.
Getting Around:
The public transport system within KL is speedy, comfortable and uncomplicated. The
city has made significant improvements to expressways and the rail network to reduce
traffic congestion. While buses and city trains move huge numbers of people, travellers
will probably find most joy with the fast and frequent Light Rail (LRT) and monorail.
Weather:
It's hot and humid throughout Malaysia all year round, with overnight lows rarely
sinking below 20°C (70°F) and maximums rising above 30°C (86°F) on most days, so
whenever you go, take it easy. Rainfall is variable and falls all year round. It is rare for
rain to fall all day; it usually confines itself to short-lived torrential downpours in the
afternoons. The driest months tend to be June and July.

Taxi
KL has plenty of taxis, and fares are cheap, starting at RM2 for the first kilometre, with an
additional 10 sen for each 200m. From midnight to 6am there’s a surcharge of 50% on the
metered fare, and extra passengers (more than two) are charged 20 sen each. Luggage placed
in the boot costs an extra RM1.
Even though the law mandates the use of the meter, you’ll often find taxi drivers unwilling to
use it, citing KL’s traffic or the out-of-the-way location of your destination as a reason. Taxi
drivers lingering outside luxury hotels are especially guilty of this behaviour. Stand your
ground and, if necessary, walk off and hail another taxi. If you choose to bargain, fares
around town start at RM5 and it should cost no more than RM10 to go right across the central
city area.
Be aware that taxis will often only stop at the numerous officially signposted taxi stands and
although it is possible to wave one down, some drivers are reluctant to stop.
Taxi
KL has plenty of air-conditioned taxis, which queue up at designed taxi stops across the city.
You can also flag down moving taxis, but drivers will only stop if there is a convenient place
to pull over. Fares start at RM2 for the first two minutes, with an additional 10 sen for each
45 seconds. From midnight to 6am there’s a surcharge of 50% on the metered fare, and extra
passengers (more than two) are charged 20 sen each. Luggage placed in the boot is an extra
RM1 and there’s an RM12 surcharge for taxis to KLIA.
Unfortunately, some drivers have a limited geographical knowledge of the city, and many are
reluctant to use the meter, even though this is a legal requirement. Taxi drivers lingering
outside luxury hotels are especially guilty of this behaviour, citing KL’s traffic or the out-of-
the-way location of your destination as a reason for an elevated cash fare. This is baloney. If
a driver demands a fixed fare, bargain hard, or walk away and find another taxi. As a guide,
you can get right across the centre of town for RM5 on the meter or RM10 after bargaining.
Note that KL Sentral and some large malls have a coupon system for taxis where you pay in
advance.

You’ll seldom be far from a bank/ATM. Moneychangers offer better rates than banks for
changing cash and (at times) travellers cheques; usually open later hours and on weekends
and found in shopping malls.

though private moneychangers sometimes offer slightly better rates for cash than banks. Most
banks and shopping malls provide international ATMs (typically on the ground floor or
basement level).

KL is generally very safe, but it pays to watch for pickpockets on crowded public transport.
One ongoing irritation in KL is the state of the pavements. The temporary covers thrown over
drains can give way suddenly, dumping you in the drink or worse, so walk around them.
Flooding can also a be problem, particularly during the monsoon – carry an umbrella and be
prepared to roll up your trousers to wade through giant puddles.
