An Object Identifier (OID) is used to uniquely identify objects across systems. An OID is supplied along with an ID, which uniquely identifies an object within the OID's coding system. The structure of an OID provides information about what type of identification system the ID belongs to. The example shows OIDs and IDs for identifying a Dutch caretaker by their UZI number, a patient by their BSN number, and a Dutch organization by their URA number.
