This document discusses the increasing adoption of cloud computing by the US government. It notes that government agencies are looking to cloud solutions to help address budget constraints while improving services, collaboration, and transparency. The document outlines the key steps the government has taken to support cloud computing, including establishing an office to oversee cloud initiatives and requiring agencies to consider cloud options for IT projects. It provides examples of government agencies and departments using Salesforce cloud applications.

8. US Government Agencies Driving Cloud Computing
• Office of Management and Budget (OMB) created the priority
for cloud computing and issued budget guidance.
• Federal CIO Council established a Cloud Computing
Executive Steering Committee to develop strategy.
• General Services Administration (GSA) developed a Web-
based cloud computing storefront (Apps.gov) and is driving
implementation.
• Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) is exploring
how cloud computing can improve healthcare and
government transparency
• National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) is
framing security and audit controls for cloud computing.
• Defense Information Systems Agency is exploring options
for the military.
9. Cloud Computing Highlighted in FY 2010 Federal Budget
“The Federal technology environment requires a fundamental
reexamination of investments in technology infrastructure.”
“The Infrastructure Modernization Program will be taking on new
challenges and responsibilities. Pilot projects will be implemented to
offer an opportunity to utilize more fully and broadly departmental and
agency architectures to identify enterprise-wide common services and
solutions with a new emphasis on cloud computing. “
“The Federal Government will transform its Information Technology
Infrastructure by virtualizing data centers, consolidating data centers
and operations, and ultimately adopting a cloud-computing business
model.”

10. Cloud Computing Highlighted in FY 2011 Federal Budget
“Cloud Computing—Adoption of a cloud computing model
is a major part of the strategy to achieve efficient and
effective IT. After evaluation in 2010, agencies will deploy
cloud computing solutions across the Government to
improve the delivery of IT services. There will be an on-line
storefront to enable subscribers to access lightweight
collaboration tools, software, and platform and
infrastruc-ture service offerings in a cloud environment.
Cloud computing will be implemented in a secure manner”

12. Cloud Computing Review Required in FY 2011,
FY 2012 and FY 2013 Federal Budgets
• FY 2011 Budget -- Federal agencies must review/consider a cloud
computing option for all new and existing major investments.
• FY 2012 federal agencies must develop an alternative analysis
discussing how they could use cloud computing for all major technology
projects.
• FY 2013, federal agencies must provide a complete alternatives analysis
for mixed life cycle projects where agencies are spending new money
(known as development, modernization and enhancement) and steady
state or operations and maintenance funding for how they could move to
cloud computing.
