We have always been told to take the path take that will guide us to a better future. We have been
asked numerous questions about what are majors will be in college, at what age do we see
ourselves settled down and married. I too have been asked, but not the reaction I had expected.
This conversation came up when I was talking to a group of friends where I had been asked if I
would agree to an arranged marriage, due to my ethnicity. Just as I had answered yes, more
questions and comments were hurled my way. "Aren't arranged marriages loveless marriage,
you're okay with that?" "Are you really going to be forced to marriage a stranger?" "Don't those
only happen in India?" If we were to ask the question, "what is marriage?", we would be likely say
that it is the bond between a husband and a wife or recite the dictionary definition: "the legally
recognized union of a man and a woman as partners in a relationship." So what is an arranged
marriage? If we search the internet, an arranged marriage, according to Webster dictionary, is "a
marriage in which the husband and wife are chosen for each other by their parents." Yet Oxford
dictionary and Google, the most common search engine used around the world, describes arranged
marriages as "a marriage planned and agreed to by the families or guardians of the bride and groom,

What comes to mind when you hear the words arranged marriage? I am sure a happy, respectful,
loving relationship was not what popped into your mind. Arrange marriages are a complex subject,
and the concept is perceived as a human rights issue where individuals loose the right to freedom of
choice. In saying that, my initial opinion of an arranged marriage was not held in high regard.
However, after being introduced to someone who is in the process of an arranged marriage; and

Unfortunately, this occurs only in fairy tales. To follow on, Seth (2009) states "one of the
reasons most people know very little about arrange marriages for the reason it is a topic that has
been negatively represented (or, at best, ignored) by the media" (p. 7). In saying that, when was
the last time you can recall reading or hearing about two adults, including their families, unifying
by choice in the efforts of financial and economic assistance? I personally can not and this thought
makes me rather sceptical of the media. It is very likely the mass media has done their research
and covers negative stories, for example forced marriages, for the purpose to increase profit (Van

Primarily, I had a lot of misunderstanding and had formed stereotypes towards arrange marriages, I
knew so little. The notion of an arrange marriage brought to mind the characteristics of a forced
marriage. The line between these two is at times blurry however freedom of choice is what
separates them (Trapp, 2009). Seth (2009) gives a definition to help understand the concept; "an
arranged marriage can be defined as a marriage organised by a third party and based on
considerations other than love, intimacy, and physical or sexual attraction" (p. 7). Seth (2009) further

Marriage is a union that has been around for as long as humans have walked the earth. The human
race depends upon the union of its members, and as such, the subject of marriage has been an issue
that receives more intense scrutiny and attention than many would likely believe. In today's day and
age, with humanity continuing to move in a modern direction, many argue that marriage is a union
that should be entered into freely and should be based exclusively on the love between two people.
However, I argue that arranged marriage, which has taken place throughout the ages and throughout
the world, is a union that offers its observers a marriage based in support, longevity and love, and is
an institution that should not be frowned upon.

Many centuries before and even to this day, love is not the only reason people get married.
Although this may seem ridiculous to some people, it is very prevalent in the western world that
men and women be joined together through an arranged process by which these couples have no
choice (Epstein, Pandit & Thakar, 2013). Many times these arrangements are made through the
mother and father of the couples who are to be joined together. Sometimes these couples don't
even know each other and their first time meeting is on their wedding day (Bowman & Dollahite.

to be married without prior knowledge of each other are as happy/successful as couples who have
known each other for longer periods of time and have fallen in love prior to their marriage. Much of
this research shows that women who are forced into arranged marriages are extremely anxious
about the entire process, while men are excited. This review will not explore spousal violence, but

In the year of 2016, 26,250,000 arranged marriages occurred annually worldwide. In another
perspective, 52.25% of marriages were arranged as of 2016 ("Arranged/Forced"). Arrange marriage

benefits that one could bring. In the beginning, she expresses her negative opinion on arranged
marriages but then goes on to provide the reader with different facts and statements from

I chose the topic of arranged marriages with a focus on arranged marriages of minors. It is
baffling to me that even in the 21st century, young children are being forced into intimate
relationships. This topic is fascinating due to the fact that as a Canadian, arranging marriages of
children seems absurd. I also wanted to choose this topic to learn more about how arranged
marriages work than what I have already learned in this course and why parents would ever choose

As you may or may not know, I'm getting married! I've found a man who has mutual decisions, so
we've started setting up for the marraige that will happen around mid–June next year. I decided to
have an arranged marriage, not only because it is the custom followed in my family, but also

Marriage is defined as legal or religious union of two person in which they live together. There are
different kind of marriage but mostly arrange marriage and love marriage is talked. "In many

Why do others have to choose with whom we will share the rest of our lives, and who will be the
father of our children? Do we not have our own opinion to make such delicate decisions? Marriage
is a very important step that we will take someday, but when its principles are ignored, and the
election becomes an obligation and responsibility, the basis of marriage does not exist and turns into

Arranged Marriages Cultures and countries around the world have differing views on many topics
such as whether or not babies should be baptized, vaccinations, abortion and marriages. One topic
that has been of controversy and is viewed differently in many countries is marriage and whether or
not arranged marriages are better than love marriages. There are several different reasons why
people in India believe that arranged marriages are the best; likewise, people in Western countries
such as the United States believe that love marriages are best. Most westerners have a misconception
on arranged marriages. An arranged marriage is a marital union where the groom and the bride are
chosen by a third party, such as a mother, father, grandfather or grandmother. Most often confused
with a forced marriage, which is where the bride and groom are chosen by a third party and are
forced to marry each other or suffer the consequences. In western countries, marriages are
considered "love marriages" where the bride and groom select each other and decide to get
married based on their love and affection for one another. Even though arranged marriages and love
marriages greatly differ from one another and each has advantages and disadvantages, neither one is
better than the other in the long run. The primary difference between a love marriage and an

Marriage is a lifelong commitment. Teenagers should be allowed to make their own choices but
should also make sure they think about their choices before making them. Teenagers change
throughout their life. Teenagers may change their personality and even change who they are

families put pressure on their kids to marry, with an "our way or the highway," kind of attitude, it

The marriage may end quickly because of the pressure of a marriage that your parents wanted for
you. The child may not like their spouse because the parents thought they knew what their child was
like but the parents did not know everything about their child. When someone is forced to do
something they do not want they tend to back away from the idea and also reject the idea of doing
something they do not want to do. That goes along with an arranged marriage and why they
sometimes end easily. The children involved in an arranged marriage may not want it to happen so
they get divorced as soon as they get married. Now we will explore the final reason why parents
