There are currently over a billion pages of information on the Internet about every topic imaginable.
The question is how can you possibly find what you want? Computer algorithms can be written to
search the Internet but most are not practical because they must sacrifice precision for coverage.
However, a few engines have found interesting ways of providing high quality information quickly.
Page value ranking, topic–specific searches, and Meta search engines are three of the most popular
because they work smarter not harder.
While no commercial search engine will make public their algorithm, the basic structure can be

Each link to a page is like a vote for that page as well as the pages linked to that page. Thus a
hierarchy of pages is created and the search results are much more reliable. Lycos and Excite also
use the same system, but Google goes further. "It then looked at the position of the words on the
page, the size of the fonts, and the likelihood that the words were related to each other" (1). Going
the extra distance gives Google much better precision.
Google and engines like it can still be manipulated to achieve higher rankings. Anyone who creates a
set of pages with links between them can fool the system and add value to their page. So the race

My college search did not start out on a good note. During my senior year of high school, I was at
a difficult time in my life, and filling out college applications was not at the top of my list. I
figured that it did not matter what school I went to, so long as I got an education. My older brother
and sister attended James Madison University and they seemed happy so I decided to give it a shot.
I turned in the applications for JMU with only hours to spare. I figured I had done my part and

That's when I came across the Environmental Science program and it made me think of how happy I

considered Environmental Science as an option because it was not even offered at JMU. I started
considering UMW more and saw that it wasn't far from my home, meaning I could commute and
save money. Another important factor was its size. JMU has upwards of 20,000 students, whereas
UMW is around 5,000. With a smaller population of students, I feel like I will be able to receive a

to be secure in?". Many people in this world are insecure and don't have very high self esteem.
Most of these people try to hid this on the outside. The main reason people are insecure is because

I also know that twice each year The Outlaws come to town, and it is an incredible party. The
Outlaws are a group of the best sprint car drivers in the country that tour around to different tracks
all around the United States. Whenever they come to the Grove it is usually their only stop in the
midstate and they race against each other and the local drivers who band together into what is
known as the Pennsylvania Posse. In our local paper they usually have a write up about The
