Is Homework Helpful or Harmful to Students Essay
Homework has been around for a very long time. It is set and traced as a tradition of having
teachers assigning work and students completing it. Parents say that teachers require it; teachers
say that parents demand more of it. Teachers assign homework to help some students improve their
grade and pass the course for those of who do not do well on tests or standardized examinations.
Schools require a certain amount of hours of homework to be assigned to each student. When
students bring back work to be done at home, many controversies arise. Many families have enough
work to do without adding a full night of homework on top of it. Stress, arguments and time
frustrations can encase the family with problems. Can homework be considered...show more

Researchers summarized the finding of a large number of studies demonstrating that when children
were allowed to learn in school under conditions that matched their learning style preferences, their
academic achievements and their attitudes toward school improved. Home environments; student
characteristics, subject matter, and grade level all influence the effect of homework on student
achievement. Although the variety among every child's preferred learning style is evident, there is
disagreement as to whether efforts should be made to change or expand students learning
preferences to conform to classroom instructions or to adapt to the students particular strengths.
Sandra Hofferth at the Institute of Social Research in the University of Michigan conducted a
survey of 3,600 children in 1981 and again in 1997. The study surveyed the amount of time in
minutes spent studying homework, playing organized sports, and watching TV. The ages of the
children ranged from 3 years old to 11 years old. A total of each category, in 1981 and then in 1997,
students were found studying 225 minutes to 376

Why Is Homework Necessary For Elementary School
Homework Is Not Necessary for Elementary Students
Elementary education is something many people are familiar with. Some may have taught in
elementary schools, researched elementary education, or at the least, attended elementary school.
School work and projects assigned to be completed at home are a large part of primary education,
and most people who have completed grades one through six have experienced homework
themselves, but does familiarity mean necessity? How important is homework in elementary
education? Is it helpful or possibly even harmful? Educators and psychologists have conducted many
studies on homework in elementary education, and it is an important subject (Healy). Children learn
and refine routines and skills related to school in their elementary years (Healy). Even though
homework is often considered a requirement of education, the benefits of homework for elementary
age children are inconclusive, and homework has been shown to degrade young students morale and
lower test scores (Reilly). Homework should be greatly reduced or even banned in elementary
schools....show more content...
The most common is reinforcement (Lohmann). Educators have students complete exercises
based off of what was taught in class that day. Educators may also use homework to introduce a
new topic that will be covered in class the next day or in the near future (Lohmann). Lastly,
homework can be used to boost students' morale and engage their minds (Reilly). The goal is that
this will lead to an increase in positive attitudes to both the topic being taught as well as school in
general (Reilly). Educators are given a general guideline of 10 minutes of homework for each grade
level (Reilly). For example, a second grade child will have 20 minutes of homework, and a 8th grade
child will have 80 minutes of homework

Why Is Homework Important To Me
Though these times were considered the ugly years for a few, this was not so for me. The classes
were simple. The teachers were nice to communicate with. There was also plenty of time to spend
with family. In my middle school career, I worked, but there was plenty of time have a day of
watching television without falling behind or watering the garden for two hours because I didn't
have any homework.
In middle school, I rarely had homework to take home. There was Pre–Algebra to do, but I could
accomplish that the first hour that I was home and have plenty of time to spare and do as I
please. In Mr. Deering's class, I loved many of the books we read and loved listening to him read
the book to us. He was incredible at storytelling, so everyone was quiet, or we watched tv shows
or movies such as: Courageous, National Treasure, or The Twilight Zone. I also had Mrs. Salter for
English, I sat next to her and listen to the commentary she would add to books such as:...show more

The other amount of time was spent outdoors doing work as well, but the other work was not hard
either. I loved ground spraying with a four–wheeler for musk thistles and picking up rocks to create a
bridge into the creek. These times enabled opportunities to listen to music and sing along,
however loudly and off key I had wanted. I also loved watering the garden, due to it gave time to
myself and enjoy the beauty of nature. Other kids did not understand how this was fun, but I
didn't care. I enjoyed it and that's what was important. I also loved spending quality time with
family. When it was dark, the entire family would be inside watching a movie. It didn't matter if
we had seen the movie a week before, because we were together. We'd eat popcorn and
occasionally have pop if it was left in the kitchen. These were the fun years with every all at the same
school and all ride home together even though it took forever before we'd arrived

Is Homework Necessary Research Paper
Back in elementary school I believed that homework was pointless. I did not understand why we
had to go to school for six hours a day and then were still expected to do work outside of school.
What is the point? I often thought about this growing up but never did not complete my
assignments, I was too worried about getting a bad grade. All through elementary school and some of
junior high I had these feelings towards homework. Why is homework necessary? Why do work in
school all day and come home to do more work?
Why is homework necessary? I remember asking myself this question a lot through junior high.
Freshman year of high school I received my answer. Adrienne Rich writes "This is the experience of
taking responsibility towards yourselves"

The Importance of Homework Essay
Students spend hours doing it, teachers spend hours checking it. Homework is sometimes a burden
to teachers and students but still it is necessary. Some people doubt homework's effectiveness, but
teachers and researchers agree homework is essential. Homework helps students get better grades in
school.
Some people don't know exactly what homework is. Homework is defined as an out of class
activity assigned to students as an extension or elaboration of classroom work(KidSource). There
are three types of homework teachers generally give out. The first is Practice assignments, they are
assignments that reinforce newly acquired skills or knowledge(KidSource). An example of these
assignments is writing definitions down for new words...show more content...
Parents, students, and teachers all sometimes wonder how useful is homework? Though studies
examining the relationship between homework and school achievement have been inclusive(ERIC).
Still many teachers and researchers still agree that homework helps students achieve higher grades in
school. Schools that assigned homework frequently showed higher student achievement than schools
that assigned little homework(ERIC). This means that homework is working. Studies have generally
found that if teachers carefully plan homework, homework can be quite helpful(KidSource).
Homework has proven its effectiveness and is a very powerful factor in student performance.
Students should only spend enough time on homework so that the subject is reinforced and not just
a waste of time. The national PTA suggest that from K–3 grades there should be no more than 20
minutes a day, for 4–6 grades there should be 20–40 minutes of homework, and from 7–12 grades
time varies do to types of subjects and number of subjects taken(KidSource). Anymore than these
recommended amount of times is seen excessive by the national PTA. Surprisingly U.S. students
are working as hard as Asians: 24% of eighth graders do more then two hour of homework
compared to Japans 28% and Germanys 17%(Brimelow108). Are we working to hard, researchers
don't think so, U.S. student grades are improving. As of 1996 one in every sixth grader does more
than an hour of

Homework Is Unnecessary And A Waste Of Time
If you think back to when you were in school, the homework you have been given has helped you
in some ways. Your teachers most likely gave you the homework for a real purpose besides to be
mean. Homework includes many benefits after doing it. Some people think that homework is
extremely important and necessary. While most students and some adult think that homework is
completely unnecessary and a waste of time. In my opinion, teachers should continue to give
students homework if they do not already because homework is very beneficial after completing it
thoughtfully. I also completely disagree with people that think homework is completely unnecessary
and that it is a waste of time. I believe that homework is the exact opposite. There are many benefits
of doing homework. Homework can also help practice, review, reinforce, and extend the material
learned in class. It can also enhance student education. Homework can also teach students life skills
that will be helpful later on in life. The United States Department of Education wrote, "Homework
can have many benefits for... children.... Homework can help students develop study skills that will
be of value even after they leave school." Homework will only be helpful after doing it. Diane
Ravitch, a research professor of education at New York University, wrote, "Homework does not help
students who do not do it, but ... does help students who actually complete their assignments." So, in
order to benefit from homework, you must complete

Homework As A Good Thing Essay

Abstract
Homework has been considered apart of every child's learning experience in America, but there are
many downsides to homework. Homework prevents children from exploring the world they live in,
besides just what they learn in the classroom and prevents many other activities. Along with this,
homework can be very unhealthy is child's life due to the amount of stress it causes. There is also
evidence that suggests homework has no affect on learning and in many cases is counter productive.
Homework causes many conflicts within families and is in many households left to the parents and
not the students. The evidence of homework being a good thing is outweighed by the evidence that
shows how homework can be a negative thing in many students lives.

Does anyone like having extra work after a long day? Well, since the beginning, when school
became more of a right instead of a privilege, homework has been given, teachers assign it and
students complete it. Since then, homework has been used in almost every school, everyday.
Students and parents had never seriously questioned it. Now many parents and students are starting
to question administrators and teachers over whether or not homework really is beneficial to students.
Homework is not beneficial to students because there is little evidence showing a correlation
between doing homework and doing better on tests, homework helps to diminish students' enjoyment
of learning, it forces them to have to give up other beneficial things to their...show more content...
When students are given a homework assignment it is usually meant to help them "practice" the
concept that was taught in school. Giving homework does not help them practice because they either
understand the concept and are doing extra work that they do not need to or they do not understand
the concept and they are going to practice doing it the wrong way, and complete the assignment
incorrectly ("Is Homework Beneficial"). Doing work the incorrect way will cause the human brain to
learn the wrong habit of how to do the assignment. Another valid point is that knowing that they are
completing the assignment the wrong way can cause stress and anxiety and confidence issues. Also,
many of the homework assignments given these days are graded based on completion. This gives
children the opportunity to just rush through it so that they can go outside or watch television or
anything else that they want to do. This does not help students learn at all. Even when homework is
graded based on accuracy, students still rush through to work on something else that they enjoy,
which defeats the purpose of giving

Essay about The Harmful Effects of Homework
The Harmful Effects of Homework High school students feel more stress than working adults, and
children are beginning to feel aversion towards learning. Both adolescents and children are at risk of
health issues due to anxiety and less time is spent with family, playing, and sleeping. The cause for
all of this is too much homework that is suffocating students. Homework causes students to sleep
less, have more stress, and even forces students to give up extracurricular activities. These negative
results can be improved by reducing the homework load. Students continue to work late into the
night to meet the pressing homework deadlines, sacrificing much needed sleep. According to the
National Sleep Foundation, teens need 8.5 to 9.25 hours...show more content...
However there was a positive correlation with success and sleep (Suskind). Homework can get in
the way of activities that lead to better success. If the homework load is lessened, kids can have
more time to sleep, which is very important to a child's and teenager's development. Many health
issues occur when students do not get enough sleep. The Medical Division of Sleep Medicine at
Harvard Medical School published a research article that states a lack of sleep aids in the
development of diseases such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.(Sleep and Disease Risk)The
article shows that students need sleep, and with the balancing of school, activities, and home it cuts
into time for sleep. With the sleep deprivation and a large workload students are very prone to health
issues and stress. Homework is a large contributing factor to a student's stress.Researchers surveyed
students in 10 high–performing schools in California, and found that 56% of the students stated that
homework was a primary stressor (Strauss). Reducing the amount of homework would be more
beneficial to students than not. As students go throughout the school day the homework they get
from each class piles up. Many students believe that homework is pointless since some teachers
never look it over, and give a small amount of points for all of their work. Now this is not to say that
homework should be worth more points. Rather, the amount of homework should be equal to the

Why Thiid Homework Necessary?
No we days , some school think thid homework is necessary however, I feel that homework is not
needed because we need to rest from school and it takes up too much time. in reality it is not
necessary to take homework because with all the work we do daily at school is more that enough
house is our only place of rest and we are assigned homework as not every day we have to get up
early to go the school and to be late to our house and still do the homework is a lot of stress for a
single week is very heavy with nine hours a day is more that enough teacher put us a lot of work
and then get home and do the homework is a very heavy.
When we have a lot of homework does not give us time to go with the family to eat or dinner also to

Why Kids Should Have Homework
Kids Should Have Homework Why should kids have homework? Some people believe homework
is necessary it helps you practice and get ready for the next class, others believe homework isn't
necessary and it only causes stress and is boring. Students benefit from homework because it
improves the parent/child relationship, allows them to learn knew things and communicate with
teachers, and practice and understand knew material. It also helps parent and child relationship.
Parents get to see what their kids are working on in school now."Homework allows them to keep up
with what you're doing in your classes on a daily basis."It can also help parents get a better idea of

Homework Controversy
Is homework helpful or harmful?
The homework controversy has been going on for a quiet a long time with no end in sight.
Homework is defined as an out of class task assigned to the students to help with practice or
prepare for the future. Homework has been around a long period of time. It has set and traced as a
tradition of having teachers assigning work and students completing it. Parents say that teachers
require it and teachers say's that parents demand to help their kids to finish it. Teachers assign
homework to help some students improve their grade, pass course, re–learn the subject you learn in
the class, and pass the course for those of who do not do well on tests and exams. Can homework be
considered helpful or harmful? This interrogation turns into an argument or debate between two
reasonable subjects. Especially for the student's athletes or any students who enjoys after school
activities, homework hurts probably the most. The assignments take away time, which could be
spent on doing more productive actions or spend time with your family or may cause unnecessary
stress.
Parents, educators, students and indeed general public have all deeply divided over the homework
issues for a while. When a student's falls asleep in class, he or she is unusually is disciplined for it.
"The parents of the younger K–12 students are revolting against the reportedly increasing amounts of
homework assigned their children (David)". The parents are not happy about their kids to do

benefits we can get from doing homework.Homework helps students understand the topic or subject ,
develop good skills for the class and prepare for examinations in the class. Homework helps with time
management , homework helps students to plan their lives and schedule time for their task. First of
all, homework builds up an initiative in students. They initiate study. Teachers get the schoolwork
done from students whereas students initiate doing homework. There is a sense of responsibility
associated with consummating their homework. Children feel responsible for finishing homework
and accomplished when they do it. They commence allotting their time to study and play thus
learning to consummate their scheduled

Why There Should Be No Homework Essay
Have you ever wanted to just shred up your homework or throw it out the window and have no
consequences? Kids are assigned daily homework from the time they start kindergarten at the ripe
young age of five. Is it really necessary? Does it even help better learning or even higher test scores?
The amount of homework we do wastes time, money, paper, and trees because it's practically the
exact same thing we did in class that day. Homework causes kid's and teen's frustration, tiredness,
little time for other activities and possibly even a loss of interest in their education. It also keeps
everyone up; it has kids and teens staying up until they finish it, the parents trying to help them and
the teachers grading it. So, I think that homework is...show more content...
Sometimes our parents have no time to help us because they have their jobs. Then if we can't get
any help it's going to be either a late grade or an F because we can't get a good grade without a
complete assignment. Our parents could also have a goodnight sleep without having to worry
about us failing their classes because of homework. Teachers will also gain out of no homework
because they don't have to deal with grading messy handwriting and awful grammar. They don't
have to stay up however long it takes just to grade all the papers their students. It's especially hard
for middle school teachers and up because there are so many kids and so many different classes.
Teachers can go anywhere they want if their lesson plan is finished for the next day if there is no
homework. They won't have to deal with angry kids, teens and yelling at them if they're failing
school because of homework. Homework is keeping everyone up.
It is also very frustrating hearing your assignment is due tomorrow because then we don't get to do
the things that we had planned for that day. For example, this essay I typed kept me up until I
finished it. Waking up is the worst part. We get up feeling wimpy and restless. Sometimes were not
even strong enough to eat breakfast, which is the most important meal of the day. Also

The Importance Of Homework
School, Sports, Shower, Eat, Homework, Repeat. Teens face the struggles of not having any time
to finish their homework much less having any time to do their favorite activities. Despite all of
these issues when the going get's tough you should try taking your mind off of it, talk to
someone you trust, or work harder with even more focus toward your goal. I know when I'm
stressed or upset about something my mom will always tell me to step away from the situation
for a little bit and do something I like to do so I can calm down and then revisit my homework or
the situation after. In Boy 21 after Finley talked about what happened to his mom and grandpa,
Russ asked "So that's when you stopped talking?" and Finley said "Yeah. It's also when I started
playing basketball" (Quick 232). When Finley went through that rough time in his life with his
mom passing away and grandpa getting his legs cut off, basketball became his passion and what
he loved to do. Anytime he was playing he would feel like nothing else mattered in the world. In
this Finley teaches us that a passion in itself could be a cure to dealing with life's issues. Some
people are too proud to ask for help and they are the ones who really need it the most. Those who
don't get help fall deeper and deeper into a hole and end up going insane because they have
everything bottled up. In Boy 21 Russ says, "Let's talk about what happened to our parents. I really
think it might help. I talk to my therapist all the time. You

Why Homework Is Important
"As the new school year begins, administrators, teachers, students and parents will once again face
the battle over the value of homework." We should know that homework has great value, but the
kind of homework that is given and the amount of homework that tends to be at the heart of the war.
When we are given homework there's always a time that we get a large amount of homework that
will take forever to finish. For students, lengthy homework tasks tends to frustrate them. This also
creates problems for teachers when kids either can't or won't complete the task, thereby stopping the
teacher's efforts to continue instruction the next day because he/she counted on homework
completion. The teachers need to focus on giving the kids not a large...show more content...
Duke University analyzed dozens of homework studies conducted during 2012 to examine whether
homework is beneficial and what amount of homework is appropriate for our children. The
homework question is best answered by comparing students assigned homework with students
assigned no homework who are similar in other ways. "The results students who had homework,
performed better on class tests compared to those who did not", according to Duke University.
However, 35 less rigorous (correlational) studies suggest little or no relationship between homework
and achievement for elementary school students. The average correlation between time spent on
homework and achievement was substantial for secondary school students, but for elementary
school students, it hovered around no relationship at all. Why might that be? Younger children have
less developed study habits and are less able to tune out distractions at home. Studies also suggest
that young students who are struggling in school take more time to complete homework
assignments simply because these assignments are more difficult for them. From the research that
has been shown, homework is very beneficial, but the amount of homework needs to be lowered and
that leads to the next

Is Homework a Burden or a Benefit?
al Homework is Beneficial or Burden?
Homework is defined as piece work done at home or an assignment given to students to be
completed outside regular class work or preparatory reading or research for discussion. Homework
is whether a burden or not that cannot be decided randomly. It may include the analysis of various
factors that declares it as a burden and on the other hand a necessity. One of the factor, however is
the teachers who assigns the homework as if the intensions are to burden students and to just fulfills
the formality of a regular routine, then of course it is a proven burden. As it's nothing more than a
torture and mental stress to students. Many in the education field today are looking for evidence to

So in my opinion this is never a burden." [AQSA CHUDHARY] "In university level, I will not
prefer much homework or home tasks for students. I think teachers should give some practical
activities because these activities are helpful in their practical life. Homework is just like a
writing practice in home which mostly copy from other sources. On the other hand practical
activities during lecture are more effective than work at home. Students have less time and their
minds are working sharply but in homes they get relaxed and give their work to others to do. So
in my opinion class work is more effective than homework." [SIDRA NAEEM] "Home tasks are
not a trouble for students because it motives learner to learn more and more and be practical in
future. There can be certain benefits for assigning home tasks to students like students become
dutiful and responsible. It keeps students up. Students can memorize all the points very well if they
revise any task at home and therefore their concepts regarding that lesson become strong. The
students who do not get a chance to perform their abilities in classroom; they have a good chance to
show their abilities in a better way. The main advantage is that home tasks helps the students to
revise that material which is done during lecture. There is an old saying that: "Practice makes a man
perfect." It helps students to make self–reliant and independent." [SEHAR AFSHEEN] "According
to my view, I do not think so that home tasks

Homework: Beneficial or Not?
What is homework? Most students might say that homework is a time waster and is unrelated to
learning. Both are logical statements in the eyes of the average student, but what are the facts and
why is homework part of our school curriculum? Homework has been a standing tradition in
America since the 1950's due to the education war with the Soviets. Ever since the ending of the
Cold War in the early 1990's, the American consensus openly welcomed homework as a part of
school curriculum. Homework is in our modern American roots, and it is so effective it has stayed
in our foundation. Homework is beneficial to young scholars in our school system to this date: it is
helpful and beneficial in the way to reinforce knowledge learned in schools, it provides clarity and
room for the short class schedule, and it also forces the need to use responsibility and time
management.
Reviewing and reinforcing topics learned in school is an important way to clarify and to extend the
realm of comprehension that students need in order to pass standardized tests with flying colors!
Some students may not fully understand the topic, such as "systems of equations" in math, and may
not notice their ignorance for a certain part until they try to do their homework. Of course, that is
why there are teachers and not textbooks that stare at you in class, however, learning and
understanding topics on your own during silence and solidarity may be beneficial to most students.
Twenty–five percent of learning

Is Homework Necessary Essay

  • 1. Is Homework Helpful or Harmful to Students Essay Homework has been around for a very long time. It is set and traced as a tradition of having teachers assigning work and students completing it. Parents say that teachers require it; teachers say that parents demand more of it. Teachers assign homework to help some students improve their grade and pass the course for those of who do not do well on tests or standardized examinations. Schools require a certain amount of hours of homework to be assigned to each student. When students bring back work to be done at home, many controversies arise. Many families have enough work to do without adding a full night of homework on top of it. Stress, arguments and time frustrations can encase the family with problems. Can homework be considered...show more content... Researchers summarized the finding of a large number of studies demonstrating that when children were allowed to learn in school under conditions that matched their learning style preferences, their academic achievements and their attitudes toward school improved. Home environments; student characteristics, subject matter, and grade level all influence the effect of homework on student achievement. Although the variety among every child's preferred learning style is evident, there is disagreement as to whether efforts should be made to change or expand students learning preferences to conform to classroom instructions or to adapt to the students particular strengths. Sandra Hofferth at the Institute of Social Research in the University of Michigan conducted a survey of 3,600 children in 1981 and again in 1997. The study surveyed the amount of time in minutes spent studying homework, playing organized sports, and watching TV. The ages of the children ranged from 3 years old to 11 years old. A total of each category, in 1981 and then in 1997, students were found studying 225 minutes to 376 Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Why Is Homework Necessary For Elementary School Homework Is Not Necessary for Elementary Students Elementary education is something many people are familiar with. Some may have taught in elementary schools, researched elementary education, or at the least, attended elementary school. School work and projects assigned to be completed at home are a large part of primary education, and most people who have completed grades one through six have experienced homework themselves, but does familiarity mean necessity? How important is homework in elementary education? Is it helpful or possibly even harmful? Educators and psychologists have conducted many studies on homework in elementary education, and it is an important subject (Healy). Children learn and refine routines and skills related to school in their elementary years (Healy). Even though homework is often considered a requirement of education, the benefits of homework for elementary age children are inconclusive, and homework has been shown to degrade young students morale and lower test scores (Reilly). Homework should be greatly reduced or even banned in elementary schools....show more content... The most common is reinforcement (Lohmann). Educators have students complete exercises based off of what was taught in class that day. Educators may also use homework to introduce a new topic that will be covered in class the next day or in the near future (Lohmann). Lastly, homework can be used to boost students' morale and engage their minds (Reilly). The goal is that this will lead to an increase in positive attitudes to both the topic being taught as well as school in general (Reilly). Educators are given a general guideline of 10 minutes of homework for each grade level (Reilly). For example, a second grade child will have 20 minutes of homework, and a 8th grade child will have 80 minutes of homework Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Why Is Homework Important To Me Though these times were considered the ugly years for a few, this was not so for me. The classes were simple. The teachers were nice to communicate with. There was also plenty of time to spend with family. In my middle school career, I worked, but there was plenty of time have a day of watching television without falling behind or watering the garden for two hours because I didn't have any homework. In middle school, I rarely had homework to take home. There was Pre–Algebra to do, but I could accomplish that the first hour that I was home and have plenty of time to spare and do as I please. In Mr. Deering's class, I loved many of the books we read and loved listening to him read the book to us. He was incredible at storytelling, so everyone was quiet, or we watched tv shows or movies such as: Courageous, National Treasure, or The Twilight Zone. I also had Mrs. Salter for English, I sat next to her and listen to the commentary she would add to books such as:...show more content... The other amount of time was spent outdoors doing work as well, but the other work was not hard either. I loved ground spraying with a four–wheeler for musk thistles and picking up rocks to create a bridge into the creek. These times enabled opportunities to listen to music and sing along, however loudly and off key I had wanted. I also loved watering the garden, due to it gave time to myself and enjoy the beauty of nature. Other kids did not understand how this was fun, but I didn't care. I enjoyed it and that's what was important. I also loved spending quality time with family. When it was dark, the entire family would be inside watching a movie. It didn't matter if we had seen the movie a week before, because we were together. We'd eat popcorn and occasionally have pop if it was left in the kitchen. These were the fun years with every all at the same school and all ride home together even though it took forever before we'd arrived Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Is Homework Necessary Research Paper Back in elementary school I believed that homework was pointless. I did not understand why we had to go to school for six hours a day and then were still expected to do work outside of school. What is the point? I often thought about this growing up but never did not complete my assignments, I was too worried about getting a bad grade. All through elementary school and some of junior high I had these feelings towards homework. Why is homework necessary? Why do work in school all day and come home to do more work? Why is homework necessary? I remember asking myself this question a lot through junior high. Freshman year of high school I received my answer. • 5. The Importance of Homework Essay Students spend hours doing it, teachers spend hours checking it. Homework is sometimes a burden to teachers and students but still it is necessary. Some people doubt homework's effectiveness, but teachers and researchers agree homework is essential. Homework helps students get better grades in school. Some people don't know exactly what homework is. Homework is defined as an out of class activity assigned to students as an extension or elaboration of classroom work(KidSource). There are three types of homework teachers generally give out. The first is Practice assignments, they are assignments that reinforce newly acquired skills or knowledge(KidSource). An example of these assignments is writing definitions down for new words...show more content... Parents, students, and teachers all sometimes wonder how useful is homework? Though studies examining the relationship between homework and school achievement have been inclusive(ERIC). Still many teachers and researchers still agree that homework helps students achieve higher grades in school. Schools that assigned homework frequently showed higher student achievement than schools that assigned little homework(ERIC). This means that homework is working. Studies have generally found that if teachers carefully plan homework, homework can be quite helpful(KidSource). Homework has proven its effectiveness and is a very powerful factor in student performance. Students should only spend enough time on homework so that the subject is reinforced and not just a waste of time. The national PTA suggest that from K–3 grades there should be no more than 20 minutes a day, for 4–6 grades there should be 20–40 minutes of homework, and from 7–12 grades time varies do to types of subjects and number of subjects taken(KidSource). Anymore than these recommended amount of times is seen excessive by the national PTA. Surprisingly U.S. students are working as hard as Asians: 24% of eighth graders do more then two hour of homework compared to Japans 28% and Germanys 17%(Brimelow108). Are we working to hard, researchers don't think so, U.S. student grades are improving. As of 1996 one in every sixth grader does more than an hour of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Homework Is Unnecessary And A Waste Of Time If you think back to when you were in school, the homework you have been given has helped you in some ways. Your teachers most likely gave you the homework for a real purpose besides to be mean. Homework includes many benefits after doing it. Some people think that homework is extremely important and necessary. While most students and some adult think that homework is completely unnecessary and a waste of time. In my opinion, teachers should continue to give students homework if they do not already because homework is very beneficial after completing it thoughtfully. I also completely disagree with people that think homework is completely unnecessary and that it is a waste of time. I believe that homework is the exact opposite. There are many benefits of doing homework. Homework can also help practice, review, reinforce, and extend the material learned in class. It can also enhance student education. Homework can also teach students life skills that will be helpful later on in life. The United States Department of Education wrote, "Homework can have many benefits for... children.... Homework can help students develop study skills that will be of value even after they leave school." Homework will only be helpful after doing it. Diane Ravitch, a research professor of education at New York University, wrote, "Homework does not help students who do not do it, but ... does help students who actually complete their assignments." • 7. Homework As A Good Thing Essay Roth, Grace AP Lang Period 6 October 19, 2016 Abstract Homework has been considered apart of every child's learning experience in America, but there are many downsides to homework. Homework prevents children from exploring the world they live in, besides just what they learn in the classroom and prevents many other activities. Along with this, homework can be very unhealthy is child's life due to the amount of stress it causes. There is also evidence that suggests homework has no affect on learning and in many cases is counter productive. Homework causes many conflicts within families and is in many households left to the parents and not the students. The evidence of homework being a good thing is outweighed by the evidence that shows how homework can be a negative thing in many students lives. Citations Copping, J. (2014, January 16). • 8. Does anyone like having extra work after a long day? Well, since the beginning, when school became more of a right instead of a privilege, homework has been given, teachers assign it and students complete it. Since then, homework has been used in almost every school, everyday. Students and parents had never seriously questioned it. Now many parents and students are starting to question administrators and teachers over whether or not homework really is beneficial to students. Homework is not beneficial to students because there is little evidence showing a correlation between doing homework and doing better on tests, homework helps to diminish students' enjoyment of learning, it forces them to have to give up other beneficial things to their...show more content... When students are given a homework assignment it is usually meant to help them "practice" the concept that was taught in school. Giving homework does not help them practice because they either understand the concept and are doing extra work that they do not need to or they do not understand the concept and they are going to practice doing it the wrong way, and complete the assignment incorrectly ("Is Homework Beneficial"). Doing work the incorrect way will cause the human brain to learn the wrong habit of how to do the assignment. Another valid point is that knowing that they are completing the assignment the wrong way can cause stress and anxiety and confidence issues. Also, many of the homework assignments given these days are graded based on completion. This gives children the opportunity to just rush through it so that they can go outside or watch television or anything else that they want to do. This does not help students learn at all. Even when homework is graded based on accuracy, students still rush through to work on something else that they enjoy, which defeats the purpose of giving Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Essay about The Harmful Effects of Homework The Harmful Effects of Homework High school students feel more stress than working adults, and children are beginning to feel aversion towards learning. Both adolescents and children are at risk of health issues due to anxiety and less time is spent with family, playing, and sleeping. The cause for all of this is too much homework that is suffocating students. Homework causes students to sleep less, have more stress, and even forces students to give up extracurricular activities. These negative results can be improved by reducing the homework load. Students continue to work late into the night to meet the pressing homework deadlines, sacrificing much needed sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, teens need 8.5 to 9.25 hours...show more content... However there was a positive correlation with success and sleep (Suskind). Homework can get in the way of activities that lead to better success. If the homework load is lessened, kids can have more time to sleep, which is very important to a child's and teenager's development. Many health issues occur when students do not get enough sleep. The Medical Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School published a research article that states a lack of sleep aids in the development of diseases such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.(Sleep and Disease Risk)The article shows that students need sleep, and with the balancing of school, activities, and home it cuts into time for sleep. With the sleep deprivation and a large workload students are very prone to health issues and stress. Homework is a large contributing factor to a student's stress.Researchers surveyed students in 10 high–performing schools in California, and found that 56% of the students stated that homework was a primary stressor (Strauss). Reducing the amount of homework would be more beneficial to students than not. As students go throughout the school day the homework they get from each class piles up. Many students believe that homework is pointless since some teachers never look it over, and give a small amount of points for all of their work. Now this is not to say that homework should be worth more points. Rather, the amount of homework should be equal to the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Homework is defined as an out of class task assigned to the students to help with practice or prepare for the future. Homework has been around a long period of time. It has set and traced as a tradition of having teachers assigning work and students completing it. Parents say that teachers require it and teachers say's that parents demand to help their kids to finish it. Teachers assign homework to help some students improve their grade, pass course, re–learn the subject you learn in the class, and pass the course for those of who do not do well on tests and exams. Can homework be considered helpful or harmful? This interrogation turns into an argument or debate between two reasonable subjects. Especially for the student's athletes or any students who enjoys after school activities, homework hurts probably the most. The assignments take away time, which could be spent on doing more productive actions or spend time with your family or may cause unnecessary stress. Parents, educators, students and indeed general public have all deeply divided over the homework issues for a while. Kids are assigned daily homework from the time they start kindergarten at the ripe young age of five. Is it really necessary? Does it even help better learning or even higher test scores? The amount of homework we do wastes time, money, paper, and trees because it's practically the exact same thing we did in class that day. Homework causes kid's and teen's frustration, tiredness, little time for other activities and possibly even a loss of interest in their education. Sometimes our parents have no time to help us because they have their jobs. Then if we can't get any help it's going to be either a late grade or an F because we can't get a good grade without a complete assignment. Our parents could also have a goodnight sleep without having to worry about us failing their classes because of homework. Teachers will also gain out of no homework because they don't have to deal with grading messy handwriting and awful grammar. They don't have to stay up however long it takes just to grade all the papers their students. It's especially hard for middle school teachers and up because there are so many kids and so many different classes. Teachers can go anywhere they want if their lesson plan is finished for the next day if there is no homework. They won't have to deal with angry kids, teens and yelling at them if they're failing school because of homework. Homework is keeping everyone up. It is also very frustrating hearing your assignment is due tomorrow because then we don't get to do the things that we had planned for that day. • 15. The Importance Of Homework School, Sports, Shower, Eat, Homework, Repeat. Teens face the struggles of not having any time to finish their homework much less having any time to do their favorite activities. Despite all of these issues when the going get's tough you should try taking your mind off of it, talk to someone you trust, or work harder with even more focus toward your goal. I know when I'm stressed or upset about something my mom will always tell me to step away from the situation for a little bit and do something I like to do so I can calm down and then revisit my homework or the situation after. In Boy 21 after Finley talked about what happened to his mom and grandpa, Russ asked "So that's when you stopped talking?" and Finley said "Yeah. It's also when I started playing basketball" (Quick 232). When Finley went through that rough time in his life with his mom passing away and grandpa getting his legs cut off, basketball became his passion and what he loved to do. Anytime he was playing he would feel like nothing else mattered in the world. In this Finley teaches us that a passion in itself could be a cure to dealing with life's issues. Some people are too proud to ask for help and they are the ones who really need it the most. Those who don't get help fall deeper and deeper into a hole and end up going insane because they have everything bottled up. In Boy 21 Russ says, "Let's talk about what happened to our parents. I really think it might help. I talk to my therapist all the time. You Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Why Homework Is Important "As the new school year begins, administrators, teachers, students and parents will once again face the battle over the value of homework." We should know that homework has great value, but the kind of homework that is given and the amount of homework that tends to be at the heart of the war. When we are given homework there's always a time that we get a large amount of homework that will take forever to finish. For students, lengthy homework tasks tends to frustrate them. This also creates problems for teachers when kids either can't or won't complete the task, thereby stopping the teacher's efforts to continue instruction the next day because he/she counted on homework completion. The teachers need to focus on giving the kids not a large...show more content... Duke University analyzed dozens of homework studies conducted during 2012 to examine whether homework is beneficial and what amount of homework is appropriate for our children. The homework question is best answered by comparing students assigned homework with students assigned no homework who are similar in other ways. "The results students who had homework, performed better on class tests compared to those who did not", according to Duke University. However, 35 less rigorous (correlational) studies suggest little or no relationship between homework and achievement for elementary school students. The average correlation between time spent on homework and achievement was substantial for secondary school students, but for elementary school students, it hovered around no relationship at all. Why might that be? Younger children have less developed study habits and are less able to tune out distractions at home. Studies also suggest that young students who are struggling in school take more time to complete homework assignments simply because these assignments are more difficult for them. From the research that has been shown, homework is very beneficial, but the amount of homework needs to be lowered and that leads to the next Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Students have less time and their minds are working sharply but in homes they get relaxed and give their work to others to do. So in my opinion class work is more effective than homework." [SIDRA NAEEM] "Home tasks are not a trouble for students because it motives learner to learn more and more and be practical in future. There can be certain benefits for assigning home tasks to students like students become dutiful and responsible. It keeps students up. Students can memorize all the points very well if they revise any task at home and therefore their concepts regarding that lesson become strong. The students who do not get a chance to perform their abilities in classroom; they have a good chance to show their abilities in a better way. The main advantage is that home tasks helps the students to revise that material which is done during lecture. There is an old saying that: "Practice makes a man perfect." • 18. Homework: Beneficial or Not? What is homework? Most students might say that homework is a time waster and is unrelated to learning. Both are logical statements in the eyes of the average student, but what are the facts and why is homework part of our school curriculum? Homework has been a standing tradition in America since the 1950's due to the education war with the Soviets. Ever since the ending of the Cold War in the early 1990's, the American consensus openly welcomed homework as a part of school curriculum. Homework is in our modern American roots, and it is so effective it has stayed in our foundation. Homework is beneficial to young scholars in our school system to this date: it is helpful and beneficial in the way to reinforce knowledge learned in schools, it provides clarity and room for the short class schedule, and it also forces the need to use responsibility and time management. Reviewing and reinforcing topics learned in school is an important way to clarify and to extend the realm of comprehension that students need in order to pass standardized tests with flying colors! Some students may not fully understand the topic, such as "systems of equations" in math, and may not notice their ignorance for a certain part until they try to do their homework. Of course, that is why there are teachers and not textbooks that stare at you in class, however, learning and understanding topics on your own during silence and solidarity may be beneficial to most students.
