A brief overview of the sessions. We will look at the current business and economic conditions that are driving business behavior today. We will then look at self service in terms of the potential ROI, some potential pitfalls. We will then look at the advantages that these solutions provide the company and the employees and briefly cover integration to PS HCM. After that , … will demonstrate the ease of use of self-service systems and then we will finish with a Q&A session.

But what we are here to talk mainly about today is the bolt-on application and specifically bolt-ons to PS. You can build Bolt-ons obviously for any type of software, but today we are discussing PS only What is…. Custom – whether it’s built in house or it’s from a 3 rd party vendor it is considered custom Replaces, expands….. But you still want to utilize PeopleSoft data when you create a bolt on
It is without a doubt that what is driving people’s behavior today is the current market conditions. There is a lot of concern for job security, revenues, cost containment but most companies want to survive this period and prepare for the turn around that will come in the next business cycle. This means identifying and keeping key people and reducing costs whenever possible. Some of the business drivers: Economic downturn Need to ID key personnel Reduce costs where possible Prepare for the economic turn around Retain key people
This is a graph from a survey done by Deloitte last year prior to the economic melt down. But even at that point the sample showed a very high degree of interest in the ESS portal technologies and the savings that can be realized there. But we also know that ESS provides gains in employee satisfaction which drives employee retention. ESS improves data accuracy and empowers employees in the management of their benefits & personal data.
A study done for UNUM in 2007 asked about the key business challengers from an HR point of view. No surprise that healthcare costs was at the top of the list. However, in the middle of the pack was: Retaining employees Reducing benefit administration costs Improving benefits education and communication A further assessment of this study showed that most employees did not understand the plans and the costs of the plans. And this in a period of time when companies are moving to more flexible “employee-centric” benefits that require the individual to assess the plans for personal fit and make choices. At the bottom of the list we see self-service technologies. Still a business challenge but it is recognized as a technology that is ingrained in our everyday lives.
PeopleSoft is very good software, but we all know that they have many clients and have to create things somewhat generically so sometimes they don’t have functionality or it doesn’t process exactly the way you need it for your business to run; sometimes you do need to create your own applications in order to be able to process information the way you need it for your business. Put custom information at user’s fingertips Sometimes performance will be better if you build a bolt on Security – don’t want to open up your entire PS environment to everyone, or you want to insolate your production environment or isolate a subset of production data into another place to not allow full access to all data, so have separate bolt-on app to process or display this information. I know PS security is very detailed but some companies just still have a fear of opening up their production environment and data and allow this type of access so they use a bolt on app with possibly a subset of production data
Reduces Costs of license fees, support contracts, upgrade costs, but also when using a bolt-on as a SS tool, it will save administrative costs etc… Ps solutions are generic and may not fit your business – bolt-ons can give you exactly the way you need it to function and operate - which will increase user adoption Can reduce time to delivery if you can find a bolt-on that does perform the function you need the way you need it processed During upgrades…. Minimizes complexity during upgrades and updates to your PeopleSoft environment Can minimize the need for external technical expertise and possibly redeploy HR specialists to more core initiatives Business flexibility – can change it in-house without having to deal with licensing, can make changes based on business functionality changes
So what do we get for ROI beyond the convenience factor? The most obvious area is in the volume of calls to the HR department. A significant number of queries are handled online through FAQ’s and email exchanges. A by product of this is better communication. Data in the self service system is more accurate because it exists in one place. Quality information drives more informed decisions – better decisions. When you couple the data with tools to do what if analysis the decisions are easier and more informed than they would have been in a manual system.
Chrysler automobile company. Next year they will provide new car buyers with a dvd instead of the traditional owners manual. There will still be a condensed manual with important information in the car but the features and functions will be in the dvd. What does this mean? For chrysler, (read slide) OK, so I bought a new car last march. How nice would it be to have a tutorial on the blue tooth function and getting it to work? DVD’s allow for more information in more detail with video so that now you can communicate more through more channels or means…written, pdf’s, video, etc. You get all that and save 20k trees every year!

So employees are already trained in the concepts and tasks involved with online transactions and we are all looking for easier ways to access data and manage data. Self-service provides all that and helps to reign in costs, increases employee satisfaction and also employee retention.

For updates with PeopleSoft, this is the preferred method. This is how PS or any 3 rd party would want you to do it. Presenting information is simpler and can be done ia variety of ways
