the umbilical vein
was dilated in the
present scan .
Rest of the study
was normal .
INTRA-FETAL VARIX OFTHE
UMBILICALVEIN
3. Varix of the intra-fetal
umbilical vein is
defined as a focal
dilatation of the
Intra-abdominal
portion of the umbilical
vein, with a transverse
diameter at least 1.5
times greater than the
diameter of the
intrahepatic umbilical
vein.
DEFINITION
INTRA-FETAL VARIX OF UMBILICAL
VEIN
INTRA
ABDOMINAL FETAL
UMBILICALVEIN
INTRAHEPATIC PART OF
UMBILICALVEIN
4. Choledochal, hepatic,
mesenteric, urachal,
and ovarian
cysts, a distended
gallbladder and fluid-
filled segments of
the gastrointestinal or
urinary tract.
The identification of
venous blood flow by
Doppler examination
confirms the
diagnosis.
DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS
INTRA-FETAL VARIX OF UMBILICAL
VEIN
5. A hypothesis for the
cause of this
uncommon
dilatation of
the umbilical vein is
an intrinsic
weakness of the wall
of Extra-hepatic
portion of umbilical
vein , possibly at the
site where the right
umbilical vein
normally obliterates
during the
embryogenesis.
ETIOLOGY
INTRA-FETAL VARIX OF UMBILICAL
VEIN
6. These lesions require
follow-up in order to
exclude or diagnose the
signs of hemodynamic
deterioration or cardiac
failure.The transient
appearance of signs of
heart failure like
Cardiomegaly and hydrops
suggest that the intra-
abdominal umbilical vein
dilatation could cause an
increase in cardiac work,
possibly by increasing
preload, which can lead to
cardiac failure.
