2. What is “pop” music?
Pop music is popular music and the term
usually defines the type of music that you’d
see charting in the top 40. It is basically a
description of what’s popular and what’s
trendy at the moment. Back in the day, the
term “pop music” just described music that
was known for the popularity but nowadays,
people tend to refer it as its own sound and
genre; something catchy and an easy-listen
on the radio. However, there are different
types of pop music. Some are categorized as
more urban, some are dance-y and some
could be rock-pop etc…
3. Examples
Rihanna is a good example of a popular
artist who makes urban/R&B influenced
songs. She is still considered a pop
artist due to the popularity in the charts.
This shows that no matter what type of
music an artist makes, as long as it's
radio friendly and involves catchy hooks
and beats, it'd be considered
pop music. Especially if it were
to chart high on the official
music charts around the
world.

5. How does this apply to
my magazine?
As my magazine is based around popular and
a general type of music, I will be using this
research as an example guide throughout my
magazine construction. My magazine will be
similar to Q and Rolling Stone, both of which
focus on an overview of what's currently hot
and trending. Both magazines have a
distinctive way of passing information and
styles. However, both of them are involved in
catering to a wider audience which is what I'm
hoping for my own music magazine. There
wouldn't a specific genre I'd be focusing on for
e.g, “indie pop”, “dance pop”, “electro pop”
etc but they will be divided into sections.
