Accessing spectrum is and should be everyone's right. Those who cannot access it through their telecom provider should be able to do so by investing their own money. But because of some restrictions, they are unable to do so. These restraints have to be done away with for the betterment of masses.

Benefits of setting up own spectrum in rural areas
1. Benefits of Setting up Own Spectrum in Rural Areas
Spectrum is an amazing thing by all means. Every one of us directly or indirectly use it in
many forms, whether to watch TV, browse the internet or even to make or receive a phone
call. Almost every part of the world today has access to these splendid facilities, which
continue to make life a lot easier for all. At the same time, there are still some areas, mostly
located in rural regions, where people still do not have access to such mediums of
communication, which in a way has kept the people living there backwards, and which till date
continues to possess a lot of scope.
Accessing Spectrum in Rural Areas
There are a number of regions, most of those based either in South American or African
continent, where people still cannot access the vast benefits that a spectrum band offers.
These regions mostly have the population of about a few hundreds, because of which even
the telecom companies rarely show interest in setting up their costly systems over here. But
then it is really not impossible to access spectrum despite the current scenario. Those who
can afford it can set up their own spectrum and access all such services with ease.
2. To do that, they only have to ensure getting access to availability of a certain spectrum range
within their area and the equipment which can access this spectrum for use. Those who get to
own a spectrum in rural areas can avail a number of benefits out of these, such as:
• They can use telephone services of better signal quality than what exist currently
• They can access high-speed internet without subscribing with any telecom firm
• They can set their own conditions for spectrum usage over a designated region range
• They can do all this at much lower prices than people from even the urban regions
At the same time, all such people with sufficient resources can not set up their own spectrum
bands owing to stern policies from their governments, which at times do not see such
spectrum access as a safe activity or would not like to see people access spectrum randomly
from here and there. Moreover, their contracts with telecom firms, which give the latter
exclusive rights to spectrum channels also refrains people from doing anything about the
current situation.
The effects of such restrictions
Because of such stern policies, many of those people are unable to keep up the pace with the
world in terms for advancement. They cannot even stay in touch with their family members
who have moved to other cities to seek for work opportunities, and so are unable to know how
they are doing. This only builds the gap between them, which is really not what anyone would
ever want to have. Despite their efforts to mend such shortcomings, their fewer numbers do
not work out in their favor, thereby having no medium to overturn government lobbying of
spectrum bands.
3. What could be done here
The need of the hour is to have as many people as possible from around the world to show a
concern for these people. The number of people seeking to amend existing government
policies pertaining to spectrum usage needs to become significant so that the world can see
that there is a need for change. Communication is one right that everyone on the planet must
have, and those who don't have it should be helped to get it in some or the other way.
Even if the governments are unable to get telecom firms set up their equipment in such areas,
they should at least facilitate such setup by the local people only, which will create a sort of
win-win situation for all. While those in power would not have to spend much out of their
pocket, the general public will be able to come at par with the world and do everything as
everyone else done by setting up their own systems. This is indeed not impossible. The only
need is to make this movement count, and this can only be achieved by all of us joining this
movement to make it a tremendous success.
