- The goal then is to be able to APPLY research skills/tips/strategies/techniques from a classroom setting to the real world
- Use background information, and apply your new-found knowledge towards writing your report/essay, etc. Grey literature: “the information and resources that do not categorically fall into what is available via standard traditional or commercial publishing channels.” Types of Grey Literature: theses and dissertations, conference proceedings, newsletters, reports, government documents, informal communication (telephone calls, meetings, e-mail, chat, blogs, listservs), digital libraries, search engines
- Topic Selection: (choose a topic that follows all of the assignment requirements, yet one that you would also want to know more about) Prefocus Formulation: (what interests you about the topic; don’t forget to refer to class notes/discussion as a potential source of information!) Focus Formulation: (thesis statement, from which the search process begins) Information Collection: (database/e-journal searching) Information Refinement: (changing the search strategy, using different keywords remember to check the list of references at the end of articles this can provide useful information as well) Search Closure (review the search-note incomplete citations, unidentified sources or quotations
- Accessing PubMed through the Research Databases route is the preferred option (in lieu of pubmed.gov, pubmed.org), as results retrieved now link directly to SFX!
- Use one of the databases mentioned in class to research this question!
