Challenges and Experiences
BEFORE THIS ENGAGEMENT
Brightside were a MuleSoft customer for several years.
● Not yet following an API Led approach
● Mostly Point-to-Point Integrations were being built in Anypoint Platform
● Increasing technical debt and undocumented code - with little re-usability
● Custom Authentication solution instead of APIM became a single point of failure
● Limited visibility when errors occurred
● Diﬀering technologies being used for similar purposes
● Maintenance took up a large amount of time - stiﬂing time and resources for innovation

So what did we do?
● Engaged Cloudwerx for our Salesforce CRM Project - and began architecture/integration
discussions
● Used MuleSoft for initial Salesforce POC (partly a trial run for using MuleSoft in a new
way/partly due to time and resource constraints)
● Led to an Integrations Review - analysing AWS and MuleSoft options - leading to a To-Be
System’s Landscape with MuleSoft + Salesforce being core platforms, co-existing with
AWS for the time being
● Began Global Rollout of Salesforce - with parallel stream of MuleSoft development and
release - initially outpacing the CRM work and now in sync across multiple projects

● Built a collaborative project team with Product Owners, Developers, BAs and QAs sitting
across both sides of the fence
● Brightside knowledge of new system is much improved, including documentation and API

● Improved agility allows for a quicker delivery cycle through adoption of an API-Led Approach
● Faster, standardised onboarding of vendors and partners allowing expansion into new
products, markets and opportunities
● Standardised policy integrations across all regions through Common Data Model
● Standardised Policy creation and orchestration using ALC
● Payment Integration between Salesforce and Business Central following an event driven
approach
● Eﬀectively leveraged existing Brightside AWS Services to increase solution robustness
● Realtime Error reporting
● Well documented API speciﬁcations and management capabilities, giving Brightside
improved knowledge and ownership of the system
● Built a collaborative project team with Product Owners, Developers, BAs and QAs sitting
across both sides of the fence
● Able to upskill Brightside’s existing development team on MuleSoft

Lessons Learned
● We underestimated the investment required to fully leverage MuleSoft platform and
engage the right partner - need to be fully in, not half baked
● MuleSoft’s API led patterns and roadmaps have given us guardrails to make better
decisions and reduce the risk of technical debt
● Getting house in order early - for example some upstream data sources have caused some
headaches and frustrations (e.g. Policy ingestion)
● MuleSoft -implemented and designed well - ﬁts well within our IT strategy

Local Mode: Flex installation is mostly disconnected from Anypoint control plane
- managed via local declarative config files
Connected Mode: Flex installation is connected to the Anypoint control plane for
centralized management, observability, and security
API Instance: API Instance that listens for traffic between requests and Services.
Flex evaluates any incoming HTTP request against the Routes configured to find
a matching one
Services: The downstream APIs and microservices Flex proxies and manages
Routes: Defines rules to match requests to upstream services. Each Route is
associated with a Service, and a Service may have multiple Routes associated
with it.
Policies: Set of rules and extended functionality that enable you to enforce
security, control traffic, and improve adaptability of your APIs. Flex policies
