Space Shuttle Mission/Experiment Patch Designs Proposed by Kristen Ann Winslet. The first page shows a patch I designed for the National Space Society's Education Chapter. The last page shows a letter from Shuttle Pilot Richard Covey in response to my Patch Design I submitted to George Nelson, mission specialist for the flight. What a Joy to see they adopted my patch as their mission emblem for STS-26 in 1988. The other patch designs are an assortment of designs I sent to the astronauts in the 1990's. One in particular is STS-88, the first ISS Mission. I received a note from Bob Cabana which stated his crew prefers to design their own patch, but in the end, it looks like I had made an impact. In allusion to problem of coming true the human’s final objective of scientific exploratory researches, this paper presented a new concept: the optimal methodology for human to explore whole universe. Based on the scientific computing of substance running process in whole universe system, as well as historically statistical summary of traditional natural science researches, this paper discovered that the traditional nature sciences are unoptimizable methodologies to explore whole universe, because nature sciences can just research on external phenomena which can be envisioned or guessed or measured by all possible means and equipments of sciences and technologies, although these nature sciences are just partially optimal methodologies to specially explore the substance phenomena in the existent and developing environments of human.

Copyright on academic and scientific publications (papers, articles, essays, books etc.) is the result of the interaction between formal rules (copyright law), social norms (norms of science) and technology (printing press, digital technologies). Prior to the digital age, academic copyright has had two main functions. a) Priority. The acknowledgment of a paternity (or attribution) right on the scientific publication has facilitated the certification of priority of the scientific discovery described in the text. b) Dissemination. The protection of economic rights (reproduction, distribution etc.) has enabled the alliance between scientific authors and publishers finalized to distribute scientific publications to the public. Usually, scientific authors transfer their economic rights to the publisher because the latter has the economic and technological power to disseminate scientific publications. Nevertheless, scientific authors are mostly interested in reputation and not in the economic return derived from the commercialization of copyright. According to Robert Merton's theory, the norms of science are Communism, Universalism, Disinterestedness, and Organized Skepticism (CUDOS). Scientists compete for priority but they put their ideas and information in the public domain. The ultimate scope is to share ideas and information because the progress of science depends on "communism" and "organized skepticism". In other terms, scientific publications are part of the public and critical dialogue. In this perspective, formal law and social norms, normally stating that the original ownership of copyright belongs to the authors and not to their academic or scientific institutions, mirror freedom of speech and academic liberty. The current scenario however seems completely different. In theory, Internet represents an extraordinary opportunity to strengthen the scientific debate. But reality tells a very different story. In the digital age, scientific publications are only "products". The changing nature of scientific publications is the effect of the commodification of academic research. While the interaction between commodification of academic research and university patents has been deeply investigated and discussed, scholars have paid relatively little attention to the commodification of academic copyright. In the market of scientific publications, bibliometrics and digitization distort the two functions (priority and dissemination) of academic copyright.

NACIS 2016 Presentation Rich Donohue, New Maps Plus, University of Kentucky, Department of Geography Andy Eschbacher, CARTO New mapping tools and needs continue to converge, producing stunning ways of visualizing data and gaining insights. Both industry and the academy are eager to embrace these emerging trends. Yet the challenge remains how to provide sufficient education and training to a growing population of mappers, as well as how to keep these materials current and useful. This talk explores mapping education from two complementary perspectives. CartoDB stands at the forefront of integrating frontend tools like D3 and Leaflet with backend services supported by PostGIS, enabling a web-based solution to traditional desktop GIS processes. New Maps Plus (U of Kentucky Department of Geography) blends the skills required to harness the web platform with traditional cartographic education.

1 SYG2323: Criminology SFC/Manning Writing Assignment (WA 1): Secondary Data Analysis-Literature Review Total Points Possible: 50 pts. (See Syllabus for Due Date) ________ Write a summary analysis of the journal article given to you on Canvas (pick one). For the majority of the essay, you are writing the article analysis in your own words but you must demonstrate the ability to know when and how to use APA style in-text citations for quotes and paraphrases, and your sources ideologies, definitions, dates and statistics. You also need to create an APA style reference page (at the end of your essay). Give a good but brief introduction and be sure to explore the following phases of the articles research process in your review: theory, methodology, findings and conclusions (if any are not included in the article, you need to state that in the conclusions). Three page maximum length. Show your ability to apply terminology from the assigned readings and classroom discussion into your essay when appropriate. It is very important to note that this class is a discipline specific writing class and we will be using APA style citations. You must demonstrate the ability to use the APA style tools you have learned in-class in all your writing assignments this semester. Type your name, writing assignment number, class meeting time and date in the upper right/left hand corner, this header should be single spaced. The writing assignment should be in proper left align paragraph format. The body of the text should be double spaced using a 10 or 12 font size with 1” borders. To guarantee the assignments do not accumulate late points they must be turned in on or before the beginning of the class period of the assigned due date. If you send the assignments as an E- mail attachment, make sure your file is sent as a MS Word or Rich Text Format (rtf) document or I may not be able to open it—which is the same as not receiving it. Remember, there is a loss of 5 points per each day the assignment is late (see syllabus). The Research Process Explored: Abstract Introduction -Methodology: Analyze secondary data (the lit review is what we are doing for this assignment) Theory Methodology (primary data collection not conducted but explored) Findings Discussion & Conclusions -References SCI 100 Question Development Worksheet Answer the following questions. Your instructor will use these answers to evaluate the critical elements for Project 2. 1. Why did you select your news story? What about the story makes it interesting to you both personally and scientifically? 2. What did you already know about the topic before selecting the news story? What opinions or assumptions had you made about it? 3. Which concepts covered in the course relate to your news story? How? 4. What question do you have about the topic in the news story? With more memory available, system performance of three Dell devices increased, which can translate to a better user experience Conclusion When your system has plenty of RAM to meet your needs, you can efficiently access the applications and data you need to finish projects and to-do lists without sacrificing time and focus. Our test results show that with more memory available, three Dell PCs delivered better performance and took less time to complete the Procyon Office Productivity benchmark. These advantages translate to users being able to complete workflows more quickly and multitask more easily. Whether you need the mobility of the Latitude 5440, the creative capabilities of the Precision 3470, or the high performance of the OptiPlex Tower Plus 7010, configuring your system with more RAM can help keep processes running smoothly, enabling you to do more without compromising performance.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry. The presentation explores the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) from its inception to its current status in the modern world. The term "artificial intelligence" was first coined by John McCarthy in 1956 to describe efforts to develop computer programs capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. This concept was first introduced at a conference held at Dartmouth College, where programs demonstrated capabilities such as playing chess, proving theorems, and interpreting texts. In the early stages, Alan Turing contributed to the field by defining intelligence as the ability of a being to respond to certain questions intelligently, proposing what is now known as the Turing Test to evaluate the presence of intelligent behavior in machines. As the decades progressed, AI evolved significantly. The 1980s focused on machine learning, teaching computers to learn from data, leading to the development of models that could improve their performance based on their experiences. The 1990s and 2000s saw further advances in algorithms and computational power, which allowed for more sophisticated data analysis techniques, including data mining. By the 2010s, the proliferation of big data and the refinement of deep learning techniques enabled AI to become mainstream. Notable milestones included the success of Google's AlphaGo and advancements in autonomous vehicles by companies like Tesla and Waymo. A major theme of the presentation is the application of generative AI, which has been used for tasks such as natural language text generation, translation, and question answering. Generative AI uses large datasets to train models that can then produce new, coherent pieces of text or other media. The presentation also discusses the ethical implications and the need for regulation in AI, highlighting issues such as privacy, bias, and the potential for misuse. These concerns have prompted calls for comprehensive regulations to ensure the safe and equitable use of AI technologies. Artificial intelligence has also played a significant role in healthcare, particularly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, where it was used in drug discovery, vaccine development, and analyzing the spread of the virus. The capabilities of AI in healthcare are vast, ranging from medical diagnostics to personalized medicine, demonstrating the technology's potential to revolutionize fields beyond just technical or consumer applications. In conclusion, AI continues to be a rapidly evolving field with significant implications for various aspects of society. The development from theoretical concepts to real-world applications illustrates both the potential benefits and the challenges that come with integrating advanced technologies into everyday life. The ongoing discussion about AI ethics and regulation underscores the importance of managing these technologies responsibly to maximize their their benefits while minimizing potential harms.
