1. THE NOVEAU
40
The “NEW” look at living and life over 40.
2. Welcome to The Noveau 40
OK, so you are in your 40s (and older) and yet, you don’t look like your father or other men in
their 40s when you were growing up. You see guys who are half your age and they look older
than you. You get asked your age and people say, “you don’t look your age!” Is it that people
just assume 40 plus is out of shape and sickly or is it that we are just getting better at taking care
of ourselves. I would like to believe that we are taking better care of ourselves. We are eating
right, we exercise more and we are just living healthier lives.
Our health is important to us because we have realized that to have an edge in life, we must take
of ourselves. This is definitely critical for men of color because we neglect our health more. The
Noveau 40 magazine will cover health and other aspects that affect our lives. Join us to this
journey and finally, get a chance to hear the the voices of The Noveau (New) 40.
3. Fitness 30-Minute Chest Workout
by Nick Nilsson, C.P.T.
Mensfitness.com
Guys love to train chest. So much so, in fact, that they'll spend an hour or more on it,
pounding their pecs with so many sets that they look enormous by the time they leave
the gym. As soon as their "pump" deflates, however, they're left with the same sunken
chests they've always had—and a lot of soreness. Our plan trains your chest twice as
hard in half as long and yields results you keep.
Actually, the chest component of each workout takes only about 10 minutes to
complete. You'll hit it hard using supersets and tri-sets with little rest in between, then
train the rest of your body in the remaining 20 minutes. This will allow you to maintain
size and strength everywhere else, as well as cause the release of muscle-building
hormones that will enhance the results you see in your chest.
The first workout starts with a modified tri-set for the chest, designed to pump your
pecs and stretch the connective tissue that surrounds them, thereby allowing more
room under your skin for the muscles to grow. The second chest blast is done by pairing
pushups with very heavy sets of dumbbell bench presses. Though you'll be brutally sore
afterward, the combination of high and low reps will flush an enormous amount of
blood into your chest and maximize the recruitment of your biggest muscle fibers,
setting the stage for big gains.
4. Fitness 30-Minute Chest Workout
On the third day, you'll do a variation on an old bodybuilding technique called "running
down the rack." You'll perform dumbbell bench presses on an incline, flat, and then
decline bench without rest in between. Instead of lightening the load on each set and
reducing the demand on your muscles (the way the technique is normally done), you'll
simply change the angle from incline to flat to decline—this puts you in progressively
stronger mechanical positions, so you can keep the superset going without having to
stop or switch dumbbells.
Directions:
Frequency: Perform each workout (Days I, II, and III) once per week, resting at least a
day between each session.
How To Do It: Perform the exercises marked lowercase a and b, or lowercase a, b, and c,
as a modified superset or tri-set, as prescribed. That means you'll complete one set for
each exercise in order, resting or not resting as prescribed between sets. So you'll do
one set of a, then one set of b, and repeat, or one set of a, b, and then c. Rest after the
last exercise in the group, and then repeat the process for the prescribed number of
sets. Perform the remaining exercises as straight sets, completing all the prescribed sets
for one exercise before moving on to the next.
Weight: Except where otherwise noted, use the heaviest weight that allows you to
complete all the prescribed repetitions for a given set.
5. Your Health
You have thousands of choices and decisions to make everyday. You
have the right to not go to the gym, you the right to follow poor
nutritional habits, you have the right to overwork yourself and not get
enough sleep. You must accept the fact that your physique has suffered
because of the choices that you make everyday.
6. It’s a funny thing about
life; if you refuse to
accept anything but
the best, you very
often get it.

7. Nutrition The 5 Best Supplements for Men
There are literally thousands of pills you could be taking
at any one time. Here are the most important five.
by Kimberly Flynn
mensfitness.com
Multivitamin It's not exotic, but it is a must for everyone who doesn't get enough fruits
and vegetables. (That's you, and up to 80% of other men.) Rather than megadoses of
nutrients, look for one pill that provides 100% of your daily requirements for as many
different vitamins and minerals as possible. (Amounts exceeding 100% are generally a
waste.) And make sure you buy a men's formula, without extra iron. Excess levels of the
mineral could increase your risk of heart disease (a condition called hemachromatosis),
says Doug Kalman, M.S., R.D., director of clinical research at Miami Research Associates.
Protein Powder You can get plenty of protein in your diet, but protein powder has
other advantages: It's convenient and generally lower in calories than an entire "high
protein" meal. Drinking a protein shake after every workout speeds muscle recovery
and supplies your body with the amino acids needed for muscle growth. There are two
widely used proteins: whey and casein. Whey is absorbed more quickly by the body,
while casein is digested slowly-providing the body with a longer-lasting supply of
muscle-building nutrients. That's why many researchers recommend taking a mixture of
the two to help sustain the release of amino acids into the blood for as long as possible.
8. Nutrition The 5 Best Supplements for Men
Creatine
This synthetic version of an energy source produced naturally in the body is stored in
the muscles for use during exercise. And it works! Multiple studies show that creatine
does help speed recovery and the growth of lean-muscle mass after a workout.
Manufacturers used to agree that new creatine users should start with a weeklong
"loading phase" of 20 grams per day; however, recent research shows that this isn't
necessary, according to Chris Mohr, Ph.D., R.D., adjunct professor of nutrition at the
University of Louisville. You can start taking creatine at the normal dose of three to five
grams per day after a workout. You can even mix it directly with your protein powder.
Green Tea
If we haven't beaten you over the head with the findings enough in the last year, here's
a recap: Green tea fights fat. Animals who are given the extract in studies gain less
weight and burn substantially more fat than animals getting a placebo. You can drink the
tea-experts ideally recommend about eight glasses a day-or go the easier route and just
take a supplement. Aim for 90 milligrams three times daily.
Fish Oil
Most guys in their 20s and 30s aren't thinking about their hearts. But if you have a
family history of heart disease, you ought to start thinking about fish oil, the best
protection available against the disease. Experts recommend taking at least one to two
grams a day. Be aware: This is not the time to scrimp and save money. Cheap fish-oil
supplements taste like fish and can leave you hiccuping herring all day. Higherquality
brands are more expensive, but they have much less of a fishy taste. There are literally
thousands of pills you could be taking at any one time. Forget them. These are the five
every guy should be taking in order to fight disease, counteract bad genes, and simply
live as long as possible.

Spending lots of time in the gym locker rooms has left me to believe
that I have it easy. I keep hearing comments from fellow gym members
like “oh man, you black guys have great genetics”.
This usually was the response I received once I denied ever using
anabolic steroids or growth hormone. Several times, I get the ” oh
you’re lean because all black guys are ripped”.
The point is, there is no get fit quick free card. Sure, many
folks, Black, White, Hispanic or Asian may possess some genetic
qualities that hasten the muscle building process. Irrespective of all of
this, we all must put in the time.
Instead of focusing of what we may possess, I began thinking of how
these comments usually came from those individuals who often
missed workouts, partied too much and refused to alter their workout
routines. I pondered how many took long sabbaticals and neglected
their nutritional requirements. In hindsight, these same cats were the
ones who years ago juiced up like crazy but somehow, I’m the one who
has it “easy” ?
The way, I see it, we’re all in the same boat. Everyone must schedule
time and make the best of their workouts. If it were easy, we’d see the
majority of our citizens in wicked shape. So let’s forget about who is
predisposed for muscle growth, instead, let’s focus on getting fitter!

18. HEALTH CHECKLIST FOR MEN OVER 40
Compared to women, men tend to drink more, suffer more from stress and seek
medical advice less often. However, men are also living longer and their lifespan is
catching up to women. Make sure that your later years are as healthy as possible. As
you age past 40, following health recommendations from organizations like the
Mayo Clinic is a good way to take control of your health.
VACCINATIONS
Vaccinations are not just for the young,
according to MedlinePlus. Consider a
one-time vaccination for herpes zoster,
which can cause shingles, after age 60.
Your doctor might suggest a yearly flu
vaccine over the age of 50 and a one-
time pneumococcal vaccine after age
65. This latter vaccine protects against
the most common cause of pneumonia
in older individuals. Health officials
recommend booster shots for tetanus-
diptheria-pertussis every 10 years.
ABDOMINAL AORTIC ANEURYSM
If you have smoked more than 100
cigarettes in your lifetime,
MayoClinic.com recommends an
abdominal ultrasound at age 65 to screen
for an abdominal aortic aneurysm. Using
high-frequency sound waves, the
ultrasound can look for bulges in the
main artery in your abdomen. This budge
can indicate an aneurysm. Treatment
varies from watchful monitoring of the
aneurysm to emergency surgery,
depending on its size.
19. HEALTH CHECKLIST FOR MEN OVER 40
HEART HEALTH
High blood pressure and high
cholesterol raise your risk for heart
disease and strokes. Normal blood
pressure is less than 120 systolic and 80
diastolic, or 120/80. Have your blood
pressure checked at least every two
years if it is in this range. If your blood
pressure is higher than 140/90, see your
doctor as often as he recommends. Your
doctor will likely recommend a blood
test for cholesterol after age 40,
especially if you have a family history of
high cholesterol or heart disease. Your
doctor may also include a measurement
of your triglyceride levels. Repeat your
cholesterol tests every 5 years,
according to MedlinePlus.
COLON CANCER SCREENING
Unless you have a family history of
colon cancer or personal risk factors like
polyps or inflammatory bowel
disease, screening for colon or rectal
cancer typically begins at age 50. A
number of screening tests are available
to look for cancer or for treatable
precancerous changes. This includes
testing a stool sample looking for
blood, the fecal occult blood test, or for
DNA mutations, also known as a stool
DNA test. Using a colonoscopy or
sigmoidoscopy your doctor views the
colon to look for suspicious areas and
take samples for biopsy.
20. HEALTH CHECKLIST FOR MEN OVER 40
PROSTATE EXAM
Enlargement of the prostate can cause
urinary problems as one of the first
symptoms. This enlargement can be benign,
or a sign of prostate cancer. After age 40,
your doctor will recommend a yearly digital
rectal exam to feel the prostate gland and
check for abnormalities. The prostate-
specific antigen, or PSA, test is another
screening method. This blood test measures
levels of PSA, with high levels possibly
indicating cancer.
DIABETES
As you age your risk for Type II diabetes
increases. Screening for diabetes, using
a fasting blood glucose test or blood
A1C test, should begin at age 45.
Generally, repeat screening is every 3
years although your doctor might
recommend a more frequent screening
schedule depending on your risk factors.
EYE HEALTH
Treatable eye diseases can cause blindness if
you ignore symptoms for too long. In
addition to checking your visual acuity, your
eye specialist will examine your eyes for signs
of glaucoma, macular degeneration and
cataracts. Your risk for these eye conditions
increases after age 40. The
recommendations for eye checkups are every
2 years after age 40, according to
MedlinePlus.
21. HEALTH CHECKLIST FOR MEN OVER 40
OTHER SCREENING TESTS
Get your hearing tested every 10 years after age 40 and every 3 years after age 50.
Mental health screening for dementia and Alzheimer's disease is available if you or
your family is concerned about your decision-making ability or possible memory
loss. Over the age of 40, you might find yourself divorced and newly dating. Discuss
sexually transmitted disease screening, including an HIV test, with your doctor. This
is especially important if you are going to begin a new sexual relationship.

24. Investing 3 Ways To
Indirectly
Invest In Apple
by Aaron Pragnell
Investopedia.com
Apple shares have been on a roll for the past few years: up approximately 50% within
the last year, 265% over the three previous years and 8,000% in the past 10 years. To
put the gain into perspective, in July of 2002, Apple stock traded for around $7 per
share. Had you invested $10,000 you could have bought roughly 1,429 Apple shares. If
you held onto those shares, they would be worth over $894,000 today.
Apple has come a long way and revolutionized several industries over the past decade:
iTunes changed the music industry, the iPhone has transformed the telecom sector and
the iPad has created an entirely new market. The company is on a roll and with the
tablet market barely penetrated and a potential Apple television in the future, Apple's
stock could have even further gains ahead.
One issue that arises in purchasing stock in the company is that Apple's stock is no
longer $7. As of closing on August 13, 2012, Apple traded at $626. The stock is no
longer cheap and investing $10,000 will only allow you to buy about 15 shares. The
solution: invest in Apple suppliers. Below are a few companies that should profit off of
the success of Apple and may be a more viable investing option for many.
Akamai
Founded by MIT professors, the company provides backend infrastructure service and
software for several big customers, such as the U.S. Security and Exchange
Commission, Toyota Motors, the NFL and Morgan Stanley, to name only a few. Akamai
launched in April 1999 and since has become a dominant force in the industry. Akamai
states on their website "if you've ever shopped online, downloaded music, watched a web
video or connected to work remotely, you've probably used Akamai's cloud platform."
Akamai provides Apple with infrastructure support for content delivery, QuickTime
Streaming Operations and software downloads for Apple's website. Apple, having
foreseen Akamai becoming such a vital partner back in 1999, invested $12.5 million dollars
for a roughly 5% stake in Akamai. Steve Jobs was quoted as saying "Together, Apple and
Akamai will deliver the highest quality and easiest to use Internet streaming video content
available."
Akamai shares currently trade around $35. Returns over the past 10 years have been over
3,100%, roughly 76% in three years and around 21% in the past year. If you're looking for
an affordable investment with direct relationship to Apple, Akamai may be an excellent
opportunity.
25. Investing Qualcomm
3 Ways To Indirectly Invest In Apple
With a market cap over $100 billion, Qualcomm is a major supplier in the technology
industry. The company provides Apple with processor chips for products like the iPhone
and iPad. A report published by Forbes states Qualcomm makes approximately $23.54
off each iPhone 4S sold. With 26 million iPhones sold in Apple's recent Q3
earnings, Qualcomm racked in over $612 million dollars in just three months, from only
one product.
The new iPhone is also set to be released later this year and despite 26 million iPhones
still being sold, many are waiting for the newest Apple gadget to be released before
upgrading. Rumors have circulated that Qualcomm will supply the iPhone 5 with a 28
nanometer chip, so Qualcomm is sure to reap the rewards if Apple's iPhone 5
dominates the market. Historically, the top selling quarter for the iPhone is directly after
the newest version has been released. In Q1 and Q2, after the release of the iPhone
4S, Apple sold roughly 72 million phones.
With a one-year return around 8%, beating the approximate 6% of the S&P
500, Qualcomm is fairly priced at just under $60 a share. This may be a great chance to
cash in on some of Apple's success. Qualcomm has returned over 350% in the past 10
years and around 27% in the past three years.
Skyworks Solutions
Headquartered in Woburn, Massachusetts, Skyworks Solutions was founded in 1962 and
provides semiconductors for a wide range of devices. Apple is the largest purchaser of
semiconductors, purchasing roughly $24 billion in 2011, nearly $10 billion more in
semiconductors than Samsung Electronics, who falls in second place at over $14 billion.
In 2012, Apple is expected to buy around $28 billion in semiconductors, a growth of
roughly 15%. Skyworks should benefit from this increase as it supplies Apple with
products for the iPhone and iPad.
Trading around $28 per share, Skyworks has returned over 715% in 10 years; 2011
returns were up nearly 10% and up roughly 260% over the past five years.
The Bottom Line
If you believe in Apple's future, then the companies above may be a great way to
indirectly invest in the company at a lower price point. Keep in mind that the companies
mentioned deal with many other large corporations - some even supply Apple's
competitors, as well. So even if Apple continues to grow market share, there is still a
possibility the above firms may not benefit. Buying shares in these companies can not
only be a way to invest in Apple, but to diversify your risk from investing in just one
company. If you believe in the growth of the entire smartphone and tablet market, the
above companies may be a great way to benefit from the expansion of the whole
industry.
26. 3 Things You Can Do From Home For
Additional Income
An essential ingredient in frugal living is spending less money. However, there is only so
much you can cut from your budget before you can’t cut anymore — or you feel so
restricted that it becomes difficult to maintain your situation. If you are looking to improve
your cash flow, you can look for ways to add a little more income to your budget.
Increasing your income doesn’t mean that you have to go out and find a part-time job,
though. There are things you can do from home to make a little extra money. You may have
to spend some time getting things started, but after a while, you might find that you can
create a steady income from the comfort of your home.
1. Freelancing
One of the most popular things you can do is freelance. You can freelance if you know how
to write, if you are knowledgeable about graphic design, or if you know how to program.
Technology has made it possible for you to provide your services to people all over the
world. Many of my own clients have never even met me in person. You will have to figure
out how to set your freelance rates, and you need to be careful of scams and people who
don’t pay you in a timely manner, but with a little perseverance, you can earn some money
as a freelancer.
27. 2. Start Your Own Web Site
Another way to make a little extra money is to start your own web site. Think of something
that you are passionate about, or that you are knowledgeable about. You can start a blog or
web site quickly and fairly inexpensively. Post information that others find useful, and
consider tweaking content to focus on certain keywords. You can even look for good
information from other sites, and curate it in a way that attracts visitors. Content curation
and creation are expected to really take off, and you can be involved.
Monetize your web site/blog with AdSense, as well as affiliate programs. Once you have an
established following, you can even begin offering advertising packages.
3. Consulting
If you know a lot about something, you can offer your services as a consultant. You can do
PR and image consulting, or you can provide help as a SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
consultant or social media guru. It doesn’t even have to be online. You can base a consulting
business for communications, teamwork, survey design, green living or some other subject
of interest out of your home. You may have to travel sometimes, though, so that can get
difficult.
Consulting is also tricky, since you will have to be able to deliver results and prove your
expertise. But if you have the credentials, you can be a success as a consultant — and do it
all from the comfort of your home.
Other Opportunities
There are plenty of other opportunities to work from home as part of your frugal lifestyle.
Companies are outsourcing some call center jobs to home workers or you can be a virtual
assistant. I’m sure you can think of plenty of other opportunities to create a little extra
income each month.
