Organizing Information
Online
ORGANIZATION AND TIME MANAGEMENT
SESSION 4
There are many different ways to
organize information online
Using folders on your computer
Online notebooks like Microsoft OneNote
Social Media sites like Pinterest
Online organizer websites
Folders on a computer
A file is an item that contains information like text or images or music.
A folder is a container you can use on the computer to store files in.
Folders can also store other folders. A folder within a folder is usually called a subfolder. You
can create any number of subfolders, and each can hold any number of files and additional
subfolders.
Libraries in Windows
If you are using a computer with Windows there are four default libraries already set up:
Documents Library
Pictures Library
Music Library
To open the Documents, Pictures, or Music libraries, click the Start button , and then click on
Documents, Pictures, or Music. Once you are in there you can create different folders to hold all
your information
When you open a folder or library, you see it in a window. The
different parts of this window help you navigate in Windows to work
with files, folders, and libraries more easily.
Here's a typical window and each of its parts:
source: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-
ca/windows/working-with-files-folders#1TC=windows-7
Creating a folder
Go to the location (such as a folder or the desktop) where you want to create a new folder.
Right-click a blank area on the desktop or in the folder window, point to New, and then click
Folder.
Type a name for the new folder, and then press Enter.
The new folder will appear in the location you specified.
If you create a new folder in a library (such as Documents), the folder will be created inside that
library's default save location (for example, My Documents).
Activity
1. Use a computer to explore the folders and files that are there
2. Create a new folder on the desktop using your first name

Pinterest
When we use the Internet to find information, it can be hard to keep everything we find
organized
Pinterest is an online tool that can help you do this.
Pinterest is like a digital scrapbook or bulletin board where you can store the information you
find online.
Pinterest can also be really FUN to use!
Pinterest
If you were using the Web to look up ideas for organizing your home you can use Pinterest to
help you keep track of what you find.
When you find an idea you like, you pin it to a pinboard.
When you click on that pin it will take you back to the original website where you found the
idea.
Pinterest
You can also follow the boards of other people using Pinterest.
People who use Pinterest are often called "pinners"
If you find a pin on someone else's board that you want to save, you can do that by saving it to
one of your own boards
Create an account on Pinterest
When you first start on Pinterest, you need to create an account
The address for Pinterest is www.pinterest.com
You can use your email address to sign up on Pinterest
You can also sign-up using an existing Facebook account if you have one
Pinterest lets you upload a profile picture if you want to
Your Homepage
When you sign in to Pinterest you are on your homepage
Your homepage will show new pins from people you are following, let you search for new pins,
let you browse different categories of pins, etc.
Creating a Pinboard
The first thing you will do once you create your account is to create a new pin board
Go to your profile page and select "create a board" to start a new one
You choose what you want to collect and what you want to call your board
Adding Pins to your pinboard
There are several different ways to add a pin to a Pinboard
One of the easiest is to search right on Pinterest and add from there
You can also add a Pin It button to you web browser
Adding Pins to your Pinboard
You can add a pin from the web or from your computer within your board.
Click on add a pin and then it will give you the option
Uploading an image
If you want to pin a picture from your computer, you can select "your computer".
You will then be able to locate and select the file to upload it to Pinterest.
An uploaded pin won't automatically include a link to another website- you have to add one
after.
Copyright on Pinterest
You should always link you pins to the original sources so the original creator gets credit.
If you post your own content, remember it is really easy for people to repost it.
You should review the terms page and copyright page on Pinterest
https://about.pinterest.com/en/terms-service
https://about.pinterest.com/en/copyright
Exploring Pinterest
Pinterest is a fun site to explore even if you don't want to create boards. It is a different kind of
social networking site because you connect with other people that you might not ever know
personally based on things you are interested in.
Searching Pinterest
If you want to find something specific, you can search for it. Just type in your search terms in
the search box at the top of any page on Pinterest.
