The French Revolution began in 1789, with the meeting of the Estates-General in May and the formation of the National Assembly to write a constitution in June. In July, protesters stormed the Bastille prison, starting the Revolution. The National Assembly abolished feudalism and adopted the Declaration of the Rights of Man in August. The National Assembly became the Legislative Assembly and created a constitutional monarchy in October 1789. The French Revolution saw increasing radicalism between 1791-1794, the rise and fall of the radical Jacobins, and the Reign of Terror from 1793-1794 under Maximilien Robespierre. Napoleon Bonaparte later crowned himself Emperor in 1804.
