The document summarizes key stages of fetal development from weeks 1 through 12 of gestation. During this time, major organs and structures form, including the heart, brain, eyes, limbs, and fingerprints. By week 12, all basic structures are developed, though continuing growth and development will occur. It also defines key terms like gestation period, umbilical cord, amniotic sac, and types of abortion.
1. Lesson 6.3
Terms:
•Fertilization – merging of two sex
cell-male spermatozoon and female
ovum (egg).
•Ovulation –hormones stimulate an
ovum to ripen and separate itself from
the ovary at regular intervals.
2. Lesson 6.3
•Fertilization – merging of two sex cell-male spermatozoon and female ovum (egg).
•Ovulation –hormones stimulate an ovum to ripen and separate itself from the ovary
at regular intervals.
•Fallopian tube – tube ovum
(egg cell) travels down to
the uterus.
3. What happens to the Ovum?
One of Two things can happen:
1. If the ovum is not fertilized it will
be shed along with the lining of the
uterus.
or
4. What happens to the Ovum?
One of two things can happen:
1. If the ovum is not fertilized it will be shed along with the lining of the
uterus.
or
2. If the ovum is fertilized it will
attach it self to the uterus and the
embryo will begin to develop.
5. If the ovum is fertilized it will attach it self to the uterus and the embryo will begin
to develop.
6. If the ovum attaches a pregnancy
begins.
Now sit and listen and look for a
few minutes! You don’t have to
write!!
7. Weeks One through Four
Gender is determined
Neural tube forms - It will develop
into the nervous system (Brain, spinal
cord, hair, and skin). Already your
baby has the foundation for thought,
senses, feeling, and more!
Heart and primitive circulatory
system rapidly form - While still in its
beginning stages, this is the very life
support system that will carry your
child throughout his or her life.
8. Week Five
First heartbeats begin
Umbilical cord develops
Blood is now pumping
Most other organs begin to develop
Arm and leg buds appear [
<>
9. Week Six
The arms and legs continue to develop -
Brain is growing well -
Lenses of the eyes appear -
Nostrils are formed-
Intestines grow -
Pancreas - now equipped to deal with digestive enzymes
and take on processing the insulin and glucagons the body
needs to function.
10. Week Seven
Elbows form
Fingers start to develop
Feet start to appear with tiny notches for the toes
Ears eyes and nose start to appear
Intestines start to form
Teeth begin to develop under the gums
11. •Week Eight
•Cartilage and bones begin to form -
•The basic structure of the eye is well
underway -
•The tongue begins to develop
•Intestines move out of the umbilical cord
into the abdomen.
•Body grows and makes room - Two months
along and this little one is growing inside and
out by leaps and bounds!
•The fingers and toes have appeared but are
webbed and short
•Baby's length (crown to rump) is 0.61 inch
(1.6cm) and weight is 0.04 ounce (1gm)
12. Week Nine
•Baby has begun movement
•Most joints are formed now
•Fetus will curve its fingers around an object
placed in the palm of its hand
•Fingerprints are already evident in the skin
•Average size this week -- length 0.9 inch
(2.3cm), weight 0.07 ounce (2gm)
13. Week Ten
•Baby is now called a fetus
•The most critical part of the infant's
development is complete.
•Eyelids fuse shut and irises begin to
develop - Eye color is also determined by this
point.
Write this down:
•Placenta begins to function at
10 – 11 weeks The placenta is
the organ responsible for both
the provision of nutrients along
with the removal of waste.
14. Week Eleven
•Nearly all structures and organs
are formed.
•Fingers and toes have separated
•Hair and nails begin to grow
•Amniotic fluid begins to
accumulate as the kidneys begin
to function
•The muscles in the intestinal
walls begin to practice
contractions that digest food.
15. Week Twelve
•Vocal cords begin to form
•Ears shift to their normal place on the side of
the head
•Intestines move farther in to your child's body
•His or her liver begins to function
•The pancreas begins to produce insulin
16. Back to writing!! The point is:
By the twelve week of
development every detail
of a person’s basic
structures are developed.
The baby has brain
activity and responds to
touch by the 7 th wk.
17. Back to terms:
•Gestation period – the period
between fertilization and birth.
Gestation period for humans is
38 – 40 weeks.
18. Umbilical cord - the bundle of
three blood vessels that
attaches the baby to the
mother’s placenta.
•Has two blood vessels bringing
nutrients and oxygen to the fetus
•Has one blood vessel carries
waste and carbon dioxide from
the baby
19.
20. More about the umbilical cord:
•Has two blood vessels bringing nutrients and oxygen to the fetus
•Has one blood vessel carries waste and carbon dioxide from the baby
•exchange of waste and nutrients
such as O2 happens at the
placenta, but the mother and
baby’s blood never mixes.
21. •Amniotic sac – is a fluid filled
sac that protects the developing
baby during gestation.
23. •Abortion – the killing of an unborn child.
Legal in the United States since
1973.
Estimated 30 – 60 million
worldwide per year
1.2 million in US/year – mostly
white females 20 – 24 years of age
24. Legal up to 22-24 weeks gestation
(after that fetus is considered viable)
Exceptions due to disabilities or life
threatening to mother
25. Types of abortions:
suction method (most common)
dilation and curettage (D&C),
dilation and evacuation(D&E),
saline abortion,
hysterotomy,
and partial birth
( banned in 2003
in US. Under
President GW Bush)
