Introductory Paragraphs
An introductory paragraph tells the reader what your essay is about. It should
include a topic sentence and a high‐level outline of what is in your essay or paper.
DIRECTIONS: The title and the body of an essay are printed below. Read both. Then
create a topic sentence and write a short introductory paragraph for the essay.
Is a Tiny House for You?
A house qualifies as “tiny” if it has 200 square feet of living space or less. Tiny houses can be
pulled behind a car on a trailer, or towed by a pickup truck. Most tiny houses have a kitchen, a
bathroom, living space and a sleeping area; sometimes these are the same space, with a dual
purpose. Sleeping lofts are very popular because they take advantage of the vertical space.
You might think that a tiny house would have to be for a single person, but that’s not true.
Couples with and without children live in tiny houses all over the country. One family of four
lives in a house with just under 200 square feet!
The main reason why people choose to live in tiny houses is financial. It takes most people
thirty years of mortgage payments to pay off a conventional house, and the price they pay is
actually much higher than the sales price of the house because of all of the extra money they
have to pay the bank (called interest) for the privilege of having the loan. “There is more to live
than working at a job that I don’t like just to pay for a big expensive house that I don’t need,”
said one tiny‐home owner.
Most people in the U.S. think that they “need” all kinds of things: brand name clothes and
shoes, the latest toy or electronic gadget. But there are places in the world where people live
much simpler lives. The basic human needs are shelter, food and water. A tiny house provides
shelter, a place to sleep and cook meals, clean running water, a place to wash, and a system for
handling your waste. With the basic human needs taken care of, and free of financial burden,
tiny‐home owners spend less time working and more time pursuing their dreams.
