In line with the Partnership’s strategic plan, these are the Partnership major initiatives. They were developed from a strong foundation of collaboration over several years.
The Partnership has created the Sustainability Program to strengthen the Park’s economic, environmental vitality, through education, measuring and promoting sustainable practices. When we reach 2015, the Parks Centennial, which is only 5 years away, we will have brought Balboa Park into greater environmental balance. How are we going to do it….?
The Program has many initiatives, Core Concepts Triple Bottom-line E&P’s Engage Stakeholders Mentoring/Education Save Natural Resources Lower Carbon Footprint
This Program began by learning about funding opportunities for energy efficiency projects and sharing the information in informal lunch and learns and is now an internationally recognized Sustainability model which is scalable. in Partnership with City of San Diego and SDG&E $30,000 matched additional program funding from SDG&E $7,000 Corporate Sponsorships $10,000 Institution In-kind donations - Space and Staff time $180,000 Marketing and Outreach: Presentations, Press Releases, TV Spots, Email Campaigns, Program Collateral in concert with the Learning Instute
The Park is uniting in the new ways we do business. By following practices such as US Green Building Council’s LEED program and measuring our results with tools such as the EPA benchmark portfolio the Park is making an economic and environmental difference
These projects were funded by the institutions by using SDG&E program On-bill financing. A zero interest loan paid back by the savings 17 Participating Institutions 5.4 million Kilowatt hours of electricity AND 91,000 therms of natural gas saved annually = $800,000 in annual savings Reducing 3,882 metric tons of emissions =385 homes electricity use for one year
The Cultural Partnership advocated for Stimulus funds and with the help of Councilman Gloria received 2.5 million Saving 1,200,000 KWhs Saving $200,000 annually By 2012 = $1,000,000 annually By 2015 = $1,500,000 annually
NEW PARTNERSHIP I will wrap up with sharing about our collaboration with the San Diego Green Building Council’s new Green Assistance Program (GAP) the Park is becoming a hands - on Green education center within our institutions: As a Green Jobs Training Program, it has trained more than 40 individuals with professional experience and tools to be leaders in sustainable field by working with Balboa Park facilities. Our goal is 10 or more institutions reaching LEED Other opportunities you ask..
Again, I want to acknowledge the work of Park Leadership, staff and Partners who are working behind the scenes. OUR STAFF AND PARTNERS Individually and collectively the Staff AND Partners, such as SDG&E and the City Staff make these results happen. Here is one such meeting. Through mentoring, colleagues sharing their knowledge. This was a planning meeting for 2011 projects
The Showcase Award honors us for commitment and dedication to achieving sustainability goals, and provides an important opportunity to share best practices in the field. This recognition illustrates that the the Balboa Park Sustainability Program exemplifies Be st in Class” in areas such as sustainability policies, programs, practices, tools, and technologies. Our Sustainability Journey has been included in the Rachel Maden’s new Book. AND Two of our Institutions have reached LEED
