Mass Media Worksheet
Complete this two part worksheet in your own words by answering the following
questions. In Part A – each response should be written as an academic paragraph
of at least 150 words. Be clear and concise, and be sure to explain your answers. If
you cite any sources, use APA format. For Part B – answer each of the statements
with a specific example and explanation in a couple of sentences.
PART A:
What are mass media?
Mass media is a medium which has the capacity to reach out to more audiences,
customers, and target market. It distributes information, situation and the like from
country to country across the whole world. Local media, on the other hand, is on a
limited basis, reaching out only to intercontinental or inter-state audiences in
disseminating information through different Medias. The former is most commonly
known to give information that are news-related, but is not limited to that alone as
there are also for entertainment purposes including books, magazines, television,
and the like. It may also be for the purpose of broadcasting publicly which includes
educational purposes. Mass media is evident and useful most especially during the
period of elections. National programming also serves to major part of the
population. Hence, the latter is most commonly used by politicians most especially
during election season, so as to reach out to their constituents and voters.
What are the different types of mass media?
Mass media used not only for a particular period but in everyday living are in
different forms, such as in print media which includes books, newspapers,
magazines, and the like, and mass media which includes music, movies, television
or radio broadcasting. It has been found that the newest type of electronic mass
media is no les sthan the internet but Rodman (2006) says that the publishing
industry nowadays, most especially in magazines, are made for three different
consumers or target market: trade magazines, consumer ones, and those that are
intended for public relations. There are still many others including academic
journals, magazines and comic books. It is of personal view that the internet offers
various mediums for the mass media starting from the political up to news media
and advertising as well.
