Affirmative Action What do you think Affirmative Action is? The federal government is joining a group of white students from the University of Michigan who are suing because black and Hispanic applicants are given extra points towards admission.  (2003)

Civil Rights and Affirmative Action The term   'civil rights'  refers to questions of equality under law, especially with respect to race, ethnicity and gender. It originally referred in the USA to the rights of African Americans, but is now used to include any disadvantaged group.   In the 1960s the civil rights movement, under the direction of Martin Luther King, spurred the American government into making new laws to protect the rights of minorities.
Civil Rights and Affirmative Action In recent years, the debate over civil rights has turned from equal opportunity to affirmative action. Minority groups have argued that equal treatment is ineffective in redressing years of discrimination, and that the government must take steps to help minorities compete.  Affirmative Action programs have required colleges and employers to meet targets or goals, in an attempt to make their students or workforce more representative of American society e.g. 10% of students should be black. Affirmative Action has become extremely controversial in recent years .
Affirmative Action Arguments in Favour of Affirmative Action •  It is compensation for past discrimination. •  It helps to provide positive role models for young members of minority groups. •  It aims towards a less racist and less sexist society. Arguments Against Affirmative Action •  It is unfair - discrimination on the basis of race or gender is wrong, no matter how good the  intentions. •   It is ineffective and insulting to minority groups, as it may be implied that they could not get into college or get a good job without extra help. •  It increases racial tensions and may actually increase racism in society.
Affirmative Action - Definition Affirmative action refers to a wide range of steps taken by colleges, businesses and government agencies to help minorities and women . RECRUTING Aggressive outreach is the least controversial form of AAPs (Affirmative Action Programs). Many employers advertise job openings in African-American newspapers and interview at women's colleges
Affirmative Action - Definition GOALS & TIMETABLES If the American Government hires companies to carry out any business they must have strict laws on recruiting Ethnics and women fairly. QUOTAS Goals sometimes lapse into rigid quotas in which employers or admissions directors must hit a specific number of minority hires or students

  • 2. Affirmative Action What do you think Affirmative Action is? The federal government is joining a group of white students from the University of Michigan who are suing because black and Hispanic applicants are given extra points towards admission. (2003)
  • 8. Civil Rights and Affirmative Action The term 'civil rights' refers to questions of equality under law, especially with respect to race, ethnicity and gender. It originally referred in the USA to the rights of African Americans, but is now used to include any disadvantaged group. In the 1960s the civil rights movement, under the direction of Martin Luther King, spurred the American government into making new laws to protect the rights of minorities.
  • 9. Civil Rights and Affirmative Action In recent years, the debate over civil rights has turned from equal opportunity to affirmative action. Minority groups have argued that equal treatment is ineffective in redressing years of discrimination, and that the government must take steps to help minorities compete. Affirmative Action programs have required colleges and employers to meet targets or goals, in an attempt to make their students or workforce more representative of American society e.g. 10% of students should be black. Affirmative Action has become extremely controversial in recent years .

Affirmative Action Arguments in Favour of Affirmative Action • It is compensation for past discrimination. • It helps to provide positive role models for young members of minority groups. • It aims towards a less racist and less sexist society. Arguments Against Affirmative Action • It is unfair - discrimination on the basis of race or gender is wrong, no matter how good the intentions. • It is ineffective and insulting to minority groups, as it may be implied that they could not get into college or get a good job without extra help. • It increases racial tensions and may actually increase racism in society.
  • 11. Affirmative Action - Definition Affirmative action refers to a wide range of steps taken by colleges, businesses and government agencies to help minorities and women . RECRUTING Aggressive outreach is the least controversial form of AAPs (Affirmative Action Programs). Many employers advertise job openings in African-American newspapers and interview at women's colleges

QUOTAS Goals sometimes lapse into rigid quotas in which employers or admissions directors must hit a specific number of minority hires or students
