1. A special couple tie the knot!
Issue 5
October 2014
Cloud Chatter
Our club President Kanthan Pillay and Dr Sarah Britten, tie the knot in the beautiful Clarens setting.
Sarah is also a member of our club...but they met long before that!
Sarah was very involved with the communications programme for the Rotary Family Health Days project in 2013.
Sue Paget (RFHDs Director) and PDG Shirley Downie enjoyed chatting to her during a number of meetings...and she was introduced to us by Kanthan who highly recommended her to the project.
Sarah is a remarkable artist! She does artwork using lipsticks - which is so unusual and extremely beautiful.
All the club members wish them both many decades of happiness together and for this Rotary year, Sarah is our First Lady!
2. RI President Gary Haung seen on the screen during the discussion held by so many folks worldwide.
RIP Gary’s mentioned that the future of Rotary could be through eClubs and also have more women on board.
PE Annemarie and President Kanthan were involved in the discussions.
Read more about the meeting on page 3.
It is planned that in November, all our club members can interact with the twinning club to interact… once the date and time is announced, please make yourself available so that we can have a wonderful interaction between us all.
We toasted a few clubs and the 1st Club toasted (last month) was: The Rotary Club of Bishofhofen Aus- tria (D1920). Dr Mashadi Motlana, one of the newer members of the E Club was an exchange stu- dent some years ago before she started her medical studies. https://www.rotary.at/ clubs/178_rc_bischofshofen/clublokal
The second club The Rotary Club of Vale Verde - Green Valley in Phoenix Arizona was toasted - following a proposal by club member Sue Paget - Chairperson of International Service and Programme Director of the RFHA Rotary Family Health Days, Southern Africa.
24 October - World Water Day
There have been radio interviews, TV snippets and much to do about water being cut off in some areas for over 2 weeks…. And many are saying that they would rather be without elec- tricity than water!
Water is one of Rotary International’s main focus areas.
Perhaps we should consider a water-related project in ur club. Areas such as Nelspruit , rural areas and Kenya need to be considered….so eClub members in those areas—and any other area, please consider a water project. We can even apply for a grant as well.
3. Merci beaucoup, Muchas Gracias, Thank you so much, Muito Obrigado, Aligato, 謝謝你
Dear Rotary Friends, dear Friends
MERCI BEAUCOUP ! THANK YOU SO MUCH to all of you who have
attended yesterday’s meeting of the Rotary E-Club 9920 Francophone with
Rotary President Gary Huang as Special Guest Speaker, in spite of the timetable!
133 Rotarians from 29 different countries, 52 Districts , 72 Rotary Clubs from all over the World , what an achievement ! This is the MAGIC of E-CLUBS !
Please forgive me for not giving to all of you the right to speak to President Gary, but I had been told that President Gary had a very tight schedule afterwards.
I would like to thank particularly our D9920 DG Iain who had to wake up so early to be able to attend this meeting , as well as our Friends from Australia.
I would like to thank all 13 of our “already” Twin Clubs , and our 5“future” Twin Clubs who have participated, and maybe some other Clubs, E-Clubs or “traditional” Clubs , could now come and join us in our “Circle”of Twin Clubs!
A very special THANKS to the 4 “special” Speakers who have done their “homework” so diligently , as I have been asking them to do , so that we would be on schedule...!
The New Generation and the Rotaract world was present as well with members from Europe and Africa. Thank you so much for coming ; this is your future!
President Gary’s words of wisdom have most certainly “enlightened” all of us, as well as the whole Rotary World!
Dear Friends , we have been through such a great moment of FELLOWSHIP / AMITIE ROTARIENNE during that meeting , and I am sure that President Gary has had the same feeling.
September 30th , 2014 will most certainly be a“milestone”, not only for the Rotary E-Club 9920 Francophone, but also for all of us!
So, let’s LIGHT UP ROTARY all together , in order to help more and more the people in need all over the World
Yours in Rotary Service, Amitiés Rotariennes,
Jean Louis Nguyen Qui : 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 President of the Rotary E-Club 9920 Francophone

4. A little bit of wool goes a long, long way!
PDG Mark Doyle had a friend in Australia who came to Johannesburg to assist with his cousin’s Estate. Amongst all the items that needed to be cleared, they found bags and bags of wool. Shirley Downie asked for some of the wool. A few weeks later, Shirley handed a crocheted blanket to PDG Sylvia Knoop to give the a baby behind bars - a specific programme that is supported by many.
‘I was restrictive to the colours that I used but no matter the colours...it will keep a baba very warm during the chilly nights’.
If you have any wool laying around, please let Shirley have it and she will do another blanket!
Speech Competition in Schools — October is Vocational Month
Rotary International has a special monthly calendar and in October, we celebrate Vocational Month.
It is proposed that we consider doing something special with the youth.
The proposal on the next page can be done in all the areas where you are a member...be it Nelspruit or Kenya!
Now that we have cemented relationships with other clubs Internationally and we are twinning soon, we could involve them in this project as well.
Soon a small committee will be formed to kick-start the programme.
You are all welcome to contribute to suggestions/improvements—send them to shirley@phomella.co.za.
The “Y” in YFM stands for Youth and when we inducted a new member a few weeks ago at the YFM offices in Hyde Park, the young group working at the office joined us.
They took such an interest in what Rotary as about, they thought of joining!
So, we may have a Rotaract club soon…. They will manage their own projects; raise funds and become leaders in a very different way.
Seen above are some of the YFM members at Pres. Kanthan Pillay’s induction in July.

6. During the last club Board meeting, we Toasted the RC of Valle Verde-Green Valley in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Past RFHA Board Member and friend of South Africa, Dr Phil Silvers (PRID), is a member of this club. http://valleverderotary.org/...more about the club we toasted.
“Our club is the RC of Valle Verde-Green Valley (which means Green Valley-Green Valley :)). It is a club of 57 members founded 27 years ago as a breakfast club alternative to the Green Valley RC--to attract younger members.
We do have about 10 professionals who are under the age of 45. We sponsor a very active Interact club from the two area high schools, and we also sponsor an orphanage for abused/abandoned girls in nearby Sonora, Mexico.
We host a youth exchange student every other year--last year from Latvia. Our major fundraiser is "Jazz for Fun"--a jazz festival of five high school bands.
We share the proceeds with the music programs of the participating schools. We sponsor a micro-credit credit program in Mexico, a VTT to Uganda, and this year we are sponsoring (with a district grant) a Healthcare Summit in Uganda--to set priorities for Rotary Family Health Days and a new VTT.
We have done Rotary Friendship Exchanges with Thailand, Latvia, Turkey, Uganda, and India.
We have sponsored a Global Grant scholar from Israel/Brazil and a Peace Fellow who will be going to Chulalongkorn University in Thailand. Lastly, we do an annual clean-up/fix-up day for house-bound elderly people, and on major holidays we put out American flags on the major roadways.”
Gift to Covenant Garden Estate in Mathibestad.
Rotarian Judith Chinkumbi, PE Annemarie Mostert and Tara Ison, also board members of Sesego Cares delivered this wonderful gift to start their sewing project.
Shortly, linen will be collected from the Humanitarian Centre in Bedfodview and the double sheets will be turned into single sheets… all 32 beds will enjoy the linen in comfort.
World Hand Washing Day was on 15 October and we need to encourage as many people, especially the children how important it is to wash their hands - as many times a day as possible.
Perhaps your local school can receive hygiene lessons from the teachers… you can get free soap from the Humanitarian Centre in Bedfordview...and do this as an ongoing project.
