SELF EMPOWERMENT

 BY: SOFT SKILLS WORLD
OATH
One minute for
   myself
ONE MINUTE FOR MYSELF
A small
Investment
for a BIG reward
WHY ONE MINUTE FOR
     MYSELF?
         1 TO BE HAPPY

    2.TO BE MORE PRODUCTIVE

    3.TO TAKE CONTROL OF LIFE

   4. TO CONTRIBUTE TO GROWTH
BEFORE I TAKE
   GOOD CARE OF
   ANYTHING OR
     ANYONE,
I MUST FIRST TAKE
   GOOD CARE OF
     MY SELF
Why ‘MYSELF’ is
important ? • If not me who else can
take care of ME as I can ?

              • Our selves are as different
                as our fingerprints

              • We are each unique and
                special
Now look at your watch; then sit
 in silence with eyes closed.
Then open your eyes the
 moment you feel one minute
is over & check the timing?

What did you find ?
One minute is longer than you
 thought
In one quiet minute
     with yourself,
you can first become
aware of what you are
 doing & then choose
         to see
   a better way
I TREAT MYSELF
THE WAY I WOULD LIKE
 OTHERS TO TREAT ME
• You feel successful
  when you get what
  you like.

• You feel all the more
  successful when you
  like what you get
TAKING CARE OF ME
Taking Feedback

Whenever you begin to criticize
 something about you,
Take one minute to stop, look, and
 ask yourself,

“Is there a better way to take
 care of myself right now?”
Once you stop criticizing
       yourself…
  you stop criticizing
        others
ONE MINUTE
  BECOMES A

WON MINUTE
Then

     A
WON minute
becomes your
OWN minute
NOW here, sure
Development of our “Self-Image”

• Early emotional experiences influence our concept of “Who I
  am”
• Because we are influenced by all of our experiences, self-
image is not a singular concept but rather an array of
  understanding.
SELF AWARENESS

Time to Think !!!!

What am I doing?

                                 How can I do better?
How can I increase my effectiveness?
GOAL

“A goal is a dream written down”
DETERMINE WHAT YOU WANT

     SET YOUR GOALS
SMARTER GOALS
Let’s Set our Goal
                                  GOAL

Name:
Date:

The following goals are the focus for the next _____ months:

     Educational/Professional Action plans
      Developmental goals

          Personal goals Action plans
The boat making competition
A4 sheet (one sheet) Minus 100 points

Accepted Boat (one boat) Plus 100 points

Rejected Boat (one boat) Minus 50 points

A4 sheet after starting Minus 200 points

Wastage / left over (for every ¼ Minus 100 points
           A 4 sheet )

Penalty for promise not maintained = X Factor

Calculation of X factor = (4 * no. of sheets taken ) – (no. of boats actually made)

Cost of X Factor = Minus X * 100 points

Self-Discipline
   A lesson from RAILS
 The ‘rails’ that discipline the
‘train 'gives the train a very
meaning, significance and value
Once off the track it is no more a
train, just a heap of metal.

Self Discipline is the ability to
 bring one’s emotion, thoughts,
words and actions in accordance
  with one’s goals and values.

  Discipline is self mastery. It
  involves both-actions to be
   cultivated and those to be
            avoided
Being Assertive
Being Assertive

      What is Assertiveness?

Assertiveness is based on a philosophy of
personal responsibility and an awareness of
ones rights & duties
Self Esteem – the key to assertiveness

 Your self esteem is the evaluation that you make & hold about
yourself

 It is a judgment of your worth as a person

 It is based upon the extent you believe yourself to be
competent, significant, likeable & successful person

 Evidence shows that both aggressive & submissive behaviours
spring from low self esteem
I am Assertive

• I am excited about new situations
• I believe what others say about me is their opinion - not my worth
• I approve of myself & I think and choose for myself
• My needs & desires are important enough to make them happen
• I am free to express my feelings and thoughts
• I do not measure my worth by comparisons with others
• I accept my mistakes as useful lessons
• I give myself credit for my sincere efforts aimed at success ,
    whether they succeed or not
Why all people do not behave assertively
– Confusing assertion with aggression

– Fear of unpleasant consequences from assertion

– Evaluating non- assertion with politeness

– Confusing non- assertion with helpfulness

– Perceiving situations or other people as threatening

– Believing that aggression is the only way to get results

– Failing to think rationally about one self

– Failing to accept your assertive rights

– Failing to accept your corresponding duties
THREE STEPS TO ASSERTIVENESS
Step 1 : Actively listen to what is being said & show that you
both hear & understand him / her
Step 2 : Say what you THINK or FEEL
Step 3: Say WHAT YOU WANT TO HAPPEN and work
              towards a solution

     Note : Connect step 1 & 2 with a however, Not a BUT

           • Straight posture, Head firm not rigid
           • Regular eye contact
           • Well modulated voice
           • Facial expressions fit the words
           • Open hands
        – Use of “I” statements
        – Stay assertive & move towards a workable solution

Assertive Role Play 1

You are meeting a senior manager in another department with
prior appointment to collect some important information you
need to complete a task given by your boss.

The senior manager had kept you waiting for 15 minutes
before meeting you. Even now he is busy doing his work on his
computer and does not pay attention to you.

How will you handle the situation?
Assertive Role Play 2

A senior colleague of yours comes to you when you are
extremely busy. You have a deadline to meet. The senior
colleague wants you to do dig out some information immediately
which will take atleast 15 minutes.

You do not have 15 minutes to spare right now.

How will you ideally handle the situation?
Assertive Role Play 3

You are attending a regular weekly meeting which your boss
chairs. Your boss is the sort of person who expects immediate
detailed answers to questions. You have also noticed that some
of your colleagues behave like yes men. Sometimes, this means
giving immediate answer which they know are not completely
correct. Your boss asks you a couple of questions, for which you
have answers. He asks a question on an unrelated subject .

How will you handle the situation?
Assertive Role Play 4
A colleague in a different department is criticizing the service you
are providing to her. She depends on you for some information she
has to collate into a monthly report. In the last month you were
late in sending her the information because you receive your data
late.

She is aware of this, but still blames you for the problem. You
remain calm, even though you think the criticism is unjust, but
more you defend your position the more agitated she becomes.
She remarks that the situation is intolerable and she is going to
complain to senior management about it.

How will you handle the situation?
Giving 100%
Self empowerment
