The British Universities Film & Video Council (BUFVC) is a charity that advances education through the use of moving images, sound, and related media. It was founded in 1948 and represents over 270 higher education institutions in the UK. BUFVC provides resources and expertise to help educators access and utilize audiovisual content. This includes the Box of Broadcasts National service, which allows educators to record TV and radio programs and create clips and playlists to share. A new version of Box of Broadcasts will provide over 500,000 BBC programs and improved search and embedding features to better integrate content into teaching.

BUFVC – who we are • Founded in 1948 65 years of accumulated knowledge • Established by academic staff • Main funders are Jisc • Represents and serves the interests of 274 members – 83% of HEIs in UK are members (2011-12) – 93% of UK HE students have access to BUFVC resources – All staff and students have access to our resources – Use Athens / Shibboleth account access

BUFVC – what we do • Access – core services allow HEIs to access moving image and sound through a range of databases, online & offline services. • Expertise – sharing information and advice through specialist knowledge – practice, sources, copyright; courses, events, etc. • Advocacy – encouraging high quality use of and access to moving image and sound in education. HE/FE, industry, national bodies, legislators, HEFCE/Jisc, etc. • Research – partnering with academia and industry to create high quality research outputs that can be re-used

Embedding from BoB National • BoB National content needs authentication, unlike in house systems • Embed code for programmes and clips with the flash player wrapped in an iframe. • Security features of microsoft software, various versions of Internet Exploror, varying compatibility regarding 3rd Party Cookies • Flow of information from BoB National to VLE can be disrupted • Users prefer/expect instant access i.e. youtube

- For those of you who are unfamiliar with the BUFVC, I’ll start by telling you a bit about what we do. A membership organisation and charity, the British Universities Film and Video Council essentially serves as a bridge connecting you with the content you need. WE promote the study and use of moving image, sound and related media within post compulsory education and research.We often add the the “with’ to the mission statement as all academic subjects can be enhanced with the use of these mediums, not just your typical media related subjects.
- Originally founded in 1948, the council was established by academic staff to exchange knowledge and information. Now, over 65 years on, the BUFVC has evolved to represent and serve the interests of 274 subscribing members, 187 of which are HE/FE sector establishments; through a variety of projects, events, databases and advice. - We have the information service, where we’re really proud to say there’s over 30 years of experience in our team. Our knowledgeable staff can provide practical guidance on many aspects of using moving image and sound in teaching or research and will over the best practical guidance on copyright issues. If we don’t have exactly what you need ourselves- a member of staff will be more than happy to help enquirers in the right direction. Sometimes the direction is no further than one of our many databases. We have TRILT, which provides comprehensive (since 2001) TV and Radio listings in the UK. We also have specialist TV listings in other databases… Tvtip- a searchable database of the London edition of TV times so all things ITV from September 1955-March 1985 and Channel 4 from 1982-1985This week- Production history in it’s entirity of This Week- ITV’s first current affairs series Jan 1956- Dec 1992Channel 4 press packs- 1982-2002 will be available from Autumn 2013We also have specialist Radio Archive LBC/IRN, ILR South, ILR Sharing- Combined they give access to over 400000 audio files- to HE and FESince BoB National was launched in 2007, it has gained a lot of ground. There are now over 50 subscribing institutions, 120000 programmes, 19000 clips. 17000 playlists. Over 3000 programmes are recorded every month by an average audience of around 32K News on screen, EU Screen, Find DVD, Shakespeare, Chronicle- the list is almost endless. Arts and humanities research council funded the project RH and BUFVC did the work. The code was made open source, meaning the educational community at large can benefit by creating their own “super databases”human friendly result filters, intelligently generated related records and searches, and detailed user history and export function.
