- JISC Resources is provided by JISC and JISC Collections. JISC Collections manage the licences for a number of collections of online resources available to the FE/HE sector. Access to some collections is free whilst others need to be subscribed to. A password is required for access to the collections subscribed to by your institution. Your library or learning resource centre should be able to supply you with logins. (This was previously an Athens password, and may have changed to another authentication method). The JISC content site provides an introduction to digital collections designed for education. Many of the resources do not require a login but others do. Your library or learning resource centre will be able to advise you if your college or HEI has subscribed to the resource and if so provide you with a login.
- JISC MediaHub is a multimedia website for education giving access to video, image and audio files from a weath of collections. Hosted by Edina, a JISC-funded national datacentre based in Edinburgh University. Three types of collections are available: Collections held by JISC MediaHub which require subscriptions from your college or university before you can access the resources. Collections held by outside organisations that you will have full access to. Collections held by an outside organisation to which there is restricted access JISC MediaHub holds collections which were formerly available from The Education Image Gallery, Film & Sound Online, and Newsfilm online
- JISC Digital Media (http://www.jiscdigitalmedia.ac.uk/) exists to help the UK’s FE and HE communities embrace and maximise the use of digital media. Their site contains lots of useful advice and support. There is lots of in-depth resources if you want detailed information about using digital media but a good starting point is their online tutorials which provide practical advise and guidance for searching online for audio, image and video resources. - NLN gives access to a range of multi-media online learning materials produced specifically for the post-16 sector in the UK. To view the resources go to the website (http://www.nln.ac.uk/). Users can browse the materials available and make them available to their students.
- Multimedia Sharing These are sites that allow you to upload digital images & videos. They have a comment & rating facility which allow recommendations to be made. This feature can be useful as it acts as a quality stamp enabling you to filter out unsuitable content and include content which others have found useful. Multimedia sites such as flickr give access to a a good source of images that can be searched by licence (usually creative commons) making it easier to find resources that can be used with students. When using multimedia sites, people should be aware that some of the content does not have copyright clearance and because it is on the site doesn’t mean it can be used. You should also be aware that there is a potential for inappropriate content to appear on the site so you should be careful when using sites such as YouTube with learners. For this reason many organisations block access to some multimedia sharing sites. Media Sharing Tools YouTube – users can upload video, comment on videos, browse for useful content, share with colleagues or students, content can be embedded in your blog or wiki. Flickr – Sharing of images on a website – can be accessed by friends, family and if you make them available anyone on the web. Images can be tagged and notes added. Users can comment and groups joined. Flickr photos can be embedded via slideshow feature in other tools e.g. blog. TeacherTube – similar to YouTube but with an education focus. The aim is to provide an online community for sharing instructional videos and provide a safer venue for teachers and learners to post and view content.
