3. Characterized by
the transition from
transistors to the
INTEGRATED
CIRCUIT CHIPS
and from punch
card to
ELECTRONIC
COMPUTER
SYSTEM.
4. Smaller in size then 1st and 2nd
generations.
Increased storage capabilities.
Multi-programming and volatile.
Speedy than 1st and 2nd generations.
Keyboards and monitors were used for the
first time.
Time sharing.
6. 1964__1965: IBM360 by IBM Inc was
introduced.
1965: PDP-8 was introduced.It was the 1st
computer which successfully made use of
IC chips__much cheaper and smaller.It
only has 4096 words of memory.
1966: HP-2115 with this invention
HEWLETT PACKARD entered in the
computer business.
7. 1969:UNIX introduced multi-user operating
system which was able to perform multi
tasks.
1970:GUI(pronounced as GOOEY)
designed by XEROR corporation.POINT
and CLICK, and IMAGE icons idea was
introduced.
IC CHIP: (INVENTED IN 1958 by JACK KILBY and ROBERT NOYCE).These chips are made from SILICON . The basic idea was to build a complete electronic circuit into a single block of materials. The use of IC chips was a better idea to avoid the mess of wiring needed to connect individual transistors , capacitors and resistors in the 2nd generation computers.
MULTI-PROGRAMMING: means different programs can workused at the same time.
TIME SHARING:A concept through which different users can use the computer and work on it simultaneously.
MAGNETIC DISKS: A memory device such as floppy disk and hard disk etc that is converted with the magnetic coating on which digital information is stored in form of small magnetic needles.
