Turn-down (1) service. May I come in? Good
evening, madam, sir.
 G : Oh, we are expecting a few people for drinks
before going to a night-club (2). Could you come
back?
 RA : Certainly, madam, but it is now 9 o’clock, and I
go off at 10 p.m. Would it be convenient (3) if I
returned at 9:45?
 G : Well, I don’t know. They are a little late.
 RA : Don’t worry (4). Put out a “please don’t disturb”
sign, and if I see it, I won’t knock again.
 G : Then we don’t get a turn-down?
 RA : Oh, no, madam. I’ll let the overnight (5) staff
know. They’ll come in when you remove the sign.
 G : Great! But how about tidying up (5) a bit in the
bathroom. I’ve just showered, and it’s quite a
mess.
 RA : Right away. I’ll place some fresh towels in there.
Would you like me to draw the curtains? (7)
 G : That would be nice – so cozy. (8)
 RA : Will that be all, madam?
 G : Do you have a transformer (9) for my husband’s
electric razor. (10)
 RA : I’ll send one up by the overnight attendant who
does the turn-down.
 G : And yes, I’d like a hair-dryer some time
tomorrow.
 RA : We have many articles on loan (11) to guests.
Just refer (12) to your “Welcome Booklet”.
 G : Yes, I remember. What is the Housekeeping
extension? (13)
 RA : Just dial “6”, please.
 G : You’ve been ever so helpful. Thanks.
 RA : Don’t mention it. Good night, madam, sir, and do
have a very pleasant evening.

 RA : Good morning, madam. You first, please.
(Makes way for her to pass through an entrance)
 G : Attendant, my son is coming out for the summer
holidays next week. Do you think I could have an
extra bed? One of those roll-aways (1), I’ve seen
you wheeling (2) down the corridor.
 RA : Actually (3), I’m sorry I cannot do this without
the authority (4) of Front Office. It is a hotel
regulation (5). I do hope you understand.
 G : Why, of course I do. Now, you don’t have to ask
permission (6) to get me an extra blanket and
two Dacron (7) pillows (8). I have an allergy, (9) and
cannot stand (10) feather (11) pillows.
 RA : Pardon. I don’t follow you, madam. Could you
show me, please?
 G : Can I have pillows with no feathers. See?
 RA : Yes, of course. I’ll see to it right away.
 G : While you’re at it, (12) what about an extra
luggage rack? (13)
 RA : We do have extras on request. I’ll add one more.
 G : Could you also get us a few more clothes
hangers?
I have so many dresses, and we’re long-staying
(14) guests, as you know.
 RA : We are very happy to have you. (15) I do hope
you are enjoying your stay with us.
 G : By the way, the mattress in the roll-away is
not too thin, I hope. My friend in suite (16)
1333 told me her children sleep on the day-
bed (17) and it is so uncomfortable. They
can feel all the springs (18).
 RA : The roll-aways are quite comfortable, and
I’ll get No. 1333 another mattress. I do wish we
had known earlier!
 G : So kind. Thanks a lot!
 RA : My pleasure, if you’ll excuse me a moment,
I’ll go and fetch those items you have
requested.
(Returns) Sorry to have kept you waiting,
madam. Here you are.

  • 3.  RA : (Knocking three times) Turn-down (1) service. May I come in? Good evening, madam, sir.  G : Oh, we are expecting a few people for drinks before going to a night-club (2). Could you come back?  RA : Certainly, madam, but it is now 9 o’clock, and I go off at 10 p.m. Would it be convenient (3) if I returned at 9:45?  G : Well, I don’t know. They are a little late.  RA : Don’t worry (4). Put out a “please don’t disturb” sign, and if I see it, I won’t knock again.  G : Then we don’t get a turn-down?
  • 4.  RA : Oh, no, madam. I’ll let the overnight (5) staff know. They’ll come in when you remove the sign.  G : Great! But how about tidying up (5) a bit in the bathroom. I’ve just showered, and it’s quite a mess.  RA : Right away. I’ll place some fresh towels in there. Would you like me to draw the curtains? (7)  G : That would be nice – so cozy. What is the Housekeeping extension? (13)  RA : Just dial “6”, please.  G : You’ve been ever so helpful. Thanks.  RA : Don’t mention it. Good night, madam, sir, and do have a very pleasant evening.

I’ll see to it right away.  G : While you’re at it, (12) what about an extra luggage rack? (13)  RA : We do have extras on request. I’ll add one more.  G : Could you also get us a few more clothes hangers? I have so many dresses, and we’re long-staying (14) guests, as you know.  RA : We are very happy to have you. (15) I do hope you are enjoying your stay with us.
  • 10.  G : By the way, the mattress in the roll-away is not too thin, I hope. My friend in suite (16) 1333 told me her children sleep on the day- bed (17) and it is so uncomfortable. They can feel all the springs (18).  RA : The roll-aways are quite comfortable, and I’ll get No. 1333 another mattress. I do wish we had known earlier!  G : So kind. Thanks a lot!  RA : My pleasure, if you’ll excuse me a moment, I’ll go and fetch those items you have requested. (Returns) Sorry to have kept you waiting, madam. Here you are.
