this is a very brief guide for medical students and interns who will be going in the o.t for the first time. this presentation includes almost all aspects of o.t.
2. Introduction
Young doctors are always keen to go into o.t and they
never want to miss any such chance.
So for all of such anxious young fellows this
presentation is a brief guide as to what they will have
to encounter once they are in there.
And also this includes things you should make sure
before going to o.t.
3. Here you go…
1) pre-op orders
2) changing into scrubs/o.t dress
3) prepare the patient
4) scrubbing, gowning and gloving
5) degowning
6) before leaving
4. Pre-op orders
1) consent: make sure that the consent is written and
informed consent.
2) prepare the patient:
n.p.o
i.v cannula
catheter
patient should wear the hospital uniform
anti-biotic cover
All of these may not be needed in every surgery, so make
sure whatever applies to the particular case should be
done.
5. Changing into o.t dress/ scrubs
1) be on time: better if you are a few minutes early,
this can prevent chaos.
2) keep your belongings save: if locker is available
use it, if not the keep stuff somewhere safe
3) the dress: change into the dress of your size,
remove jewelry (all accessories below the elbow be
removed like rings, watch, also remove earrings as
they sometimes fall onto the operating field).

5) wear o.t cap: cover all your hair under the cap.
6) face mask
done with all this you can now enter the operating
room.
first greet all the personal in the room.
7. Prepare the patient
1) greet and introduce yourself to the patient and the
staff.
2) shift the patient: to the operating room and then
to the operation table.
3) anesthesia: patient is now given anesthesia.
4) position the patient.
5) appropriate exposure.
6) clean and drape.

Now that you are scrubbed, do not touch any
unsterile surface as your hands are sterile.
2) gowning and glowing: wear the gown first then
the gloves. There are 2 methods of glowing namely;
closed method and open method.
in open method of glowing; gowning and glowing
can be considered separately, while in closed method
both can be considered as 2 steps of the same
method.
13. Degowning
After you are done with the procedure you first take
off the gloves then the gown before leaving the
theater.
Also at this point you can take off the face mask and
the cap.
