2. • Safeguarding young people and vulnerable
adults is the responsibility of everyone at
Pathway Group
• We have a duty to promote and ensure the
well-being and safety of Learners that are
doing programmes with us
3. Definitions
• A child is any Learner under the age of 18
• A vulnerable adult is a Learner over the age of
18 who because of physical or mental
impairment may not be able to make
informed choices or be able to protect
themselves from abuse
4. What are your responsibilities?
• You must be aware of the possibility of
abuse and to the idea that it can and does
happen to our Learners
• If you see or hear something that makes
you think a young person or vulnerable
adult is being abused you must report it
5. What is abuse?
• Abuse can fall into the following categories
– Physical
– Emotional
– Sexual
– Neglect
• Also watch out for inappropriate relationships
between younger and older Learners or other
adults
6. What to do if a Learner
discloses to you?
• Do not promise confidentiality – you have a
duty to report actual or suspected abuse and
must tell someone else
• Listen carefully and stay calm
• Take what they are saying seriously and signal
that it is important
• Try not to ask further questions – it is not your
duty to investigate
7. • Tell the Learner that to help him or her you will
need to speak to someone else in the business
• If appropriate record the information.
• Contact your Designated Safeguarding Officer (see
PathwayDirect)
– Posters and cards will also display this information
8. • Respect the dignity of the Learner and
treat the information carefully and with
respect
• Do not discuss the disclosure with other
members of your team or staff other than
your designated safeguarder
• If the Learner is 14-16, then our
Safeguarders will liaise with the Child
Protection Officer at their school
10. Contact one of the team
• If you want to talk about any concerns
you have in relation to actual or
potential abuse
• If you are worried that a young person or
vulnerable adult may be at risk of harm
11. Protect yourself against
allegations of abuse
• Do not give out personal information about yourself,
your mobile phone number or join social network
sites with your Learners (unless workbased)
• Make sure your conduct is appropriate to the
situation and can always be justified
• If possible (eg individual tutorials) avoid situations
that leave you vulnerable or open to
misunderstanding or misinterpretation. Be open
with Learners about what you are doing and why.
12. • Develop positive relationships through
mutual respect and setting and
maintaining high standards
13. Remember
• Use support mechanisms from the rest of
the business.
• Policies and procedures are on
PathwayDirect
• Share resources and contacts – please add
relevant documents/links/resources to
Pathway Direct pages.
• Don’t work in isolation.
14. • Ensure you have undertaken your safeguarding
training according to your job role
• Level 3 for designated Senior Person;
• New staff should complete required level of
training within 2 weeks of start date – HR to
monitor
• Initial training can be accessed through
Pathway Direct, level 3 through identified
training programmes
