This document analyzes the title sequences of 9 films: Shutter Island, Black Swan, Memento, Se7en, Insomnia, Skyfall, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Pi, and Psycho. For each film, key elements of the title design and cinematography are described, such as text style, images shown, and what these elements suggest about the film's genre or plot. Common analysis points include how the design creates intrigue or confusion for the viewer and what shot types are used.
2. Shutter Island
The red text looks very sinister
as it works well with what is
shown in the background. The
red suggests it being a
physcological thriller movie.
There are signs of rain
indoors showing that the
place that they are in is not
kept very well and no body
wants to make a difference
to it.
It is a very dark dimly lit
room showing that
there is something eerie
and creepy going on.
The cinematography in
this shot is a medium
long shot which shows
enough to make the
viewer want to carry on
watching. The cage gives the element of
confusion to what they use it for and
a slight hint of what will happen in the
movie.
3. Black Swan
The opening and the text is
so very simple but has a big
impact on the viewer
watching.
The chalk that they have used looks like
it has been pressed very hard onto the
paper as it is shown.
The text is also simple
but works and goes with
the background of the
black chalk being slowly
moved
4. Memento
Simple text spaced
apart to make the
whole frame filled up
with information and
clues.
Close up shot of the
photo that the murderer
took after he killed the
man.
The cinematography of this shot
is a close up. This means that
you can tell what is happening.
Also the viewers need to pay
attention because it is important
for the movie.
The blood in the
background on the
photo contrasts against
the baby blue text which
confuses the viewer.
The hand in the screenshot is also a
mystery because you don’t know who it
is which causes the viewer to be more
confused
5. Se7en
The pictures and by
what looks like a very
dim light tells us as the
audience that the movie
is going to be very eerie.
The text looks very creepy
with the first layer of text
shadowing the second and
with it flickering.
The pictures of the
hands show that
someone is working on
something very creepy.
It’s a mystery because we can
see all theses drawings and
other indications that there is
a person but we don’t know
who it is.
The cinematography shows that this
shot is a bards eye view as it is
pointing down on the drawing.
6. Insomnia We don’t know what is in the
background but confuses the
audience as it could be
anything which shows signs
of creepiness.
The text is so simple as it is just a plain background
with a some nice text in the middle which then fades
away.
The cinematography of this scene is an
extreme close up because we don’t know
what it is which confuses the viewers.
What this shot actually is, is a rag with
blood on it but not many people would
realise that.
Both of the texts look as
they are the same but just
in different colours.
7. Skyfall
The text is very simple and effective.
The sinkhole shown in the
screenshot portrays that
james bond is going
through a tough time like
he always doess in the
bond movies.
The cinematography for this shot
is an establishing shot as it is
showing us where he is.
8. The girl with the dragon
tattoo The text has a very simple design
but with a few flicks in the letters
to make it seem more devilish
and more thrilling.
We don’t know what's
in the background but
if it has anything that
relates with the title of
the movie, it could be
ink used for a tattoo.
The image that is shown is very cool
as it looks like it could be portraying
a dragon with whatever coming out
of her mouth looking like a dragons
tong.
The cinematography for this shot is an
extreme close up so we can see the
liquid that is oozing out of her mouth.
9. PI
The text is a very simplistic design
because it looks very old and feels as
it should be on a computer screen.
The other text is in a more futuristic
design and is more spaced apart to
make the two designs of text work
against each one.
This pi symbol in the middle of
the screen is very quirky and
mysterious because although the
name of the film is “PI” we still
don’t know why?
10. Psycho The title opening shows
text appearing after being
trapped underneath lines
that have started fading
away
This could portray about
something in the movie
that someone may have
a secret trapped deep
down and its clearing
away throughout the
movie.
