The document analyzes the use of visual and audio techniques in the Skyfall movie trailer. It discusses how logos are seamlessly integrated with tense music and action. Minimal text is used to focus on imagery. Font and colors associate the film with espionage. Establishing shots hint at the film's global locations. Lighting, settings, and props establish mood and genre conventions. Dialogue, music, and editing pace the trailer to build tension.
2. During this trailer there is minimal text
used, at 0.22 the two production and
distribution company logo’s are displayed.
They are placed just after Bond is seen to
be drowning allowing the audience to
process the previous action and add
tension, due to the muffled sounds and
pause in the music the logo’s fit in
seamlessly.
There is no more text for around two minutes, the only other text shown on
screen is at the end of the trailer. The film title and the release date are both in
white on a plain black background which are colours you often associate with
spies and Bond’s iconic black and white suit. The font of the text is the same for
both the title and release date both being the centre of focus and the design of
the font looking slightly dishevelled and cracked.
The other text that is less striking are in different styles to the main text but
still similar, this allows production company and legal information to be
displayed without distracting from the overall image of being sharp and
classy.
There is a social media hashtag that consumers can use to tweet about the
trailer they have just seen, promoting the film to a wider audience.
The text ‘IMAX’ also stands out and is strategically placed just under the
release date, this aims to entice the audience to see the film at the cinema,
especially the IMAX where you will get an experience you can’t have at
home.
3. As the music has a momentary pause, the diegetic
sound of the helicopter can be heard, this pause in the
music adds to the atmosphere of mass destruction, that
the helicopter is so close, it is an almost eerie sound
where you are expecting something bad to come from
the helicopter, this is emphasised by the use of low key
lighting . A variety of vehicles that you would not see
everyday again hints to the action genre.
When Bond is shot and falls into the water, parallel sound is used as
there is silence and then muffled sounds as if underwater, making the
audience have the sense of being underwater. The muffled sounds of
being underwater creates a tense atmosphere, the audience shocked
and on the edge of their seats wondering how Bond is going to
escape.
During the first few seconds of the trailer the music used matches
the action on screen, the camera shot changes with every beat,
which starts the trailer off very fast paced, the music matching the
action taking place on screen heightens the tension and suspense.
During the shot after Bond sits by the
pool, dialogue from the scene placed
before this is overlayed. This allows the
audience to understand how Bond is
feeling and what his thoughts are.
4. The mid shot on the protagonist when
he gets out of the water shows Bond’s
attractive qualities , but also being able
to see his facial expressions pain
making him seem vulnerable.
There are many establishing shots that hint to the audience the locations of
the film, such as London and Japan. These also give the idea of adventure
and travel with the varied and exotic settings.
Cityscapes are often typical l of action/spy films because they give the effect
of a busy atmosphere . This wide shot with the protagonist looking into the
distance suggests the importance of the mission, such as a whole city
depending on one man.
There are many wide shots, as seen
when showing the bridge, these are
often combined with a pan to give a
sense of the vastness and large scale
of the action taking place.
5. During a conversation with Bond, asking why he didn't stay dead, using diegetic sound
in the first scene and then using a sound bridge so the dialogue is non-diegetic in the
second scene, this allows the audience to understand the reasons behind the
conversation
At the beginning of the trailer the duration of the clips is longer than those at the end,
this slow to fast pace helps to build tension throughout the trailer. The clips transition
seamlessly using jump cuts, often matching the pace of the music, this is effective as the
clips seem to go together seamlessly rather than being completely separate. Using
dialogue from other scenes over relating clips helps to add to the effect of all the clips
being related and working together rather than on their own
6. A common feature in the trailer is the use of low key lighting in
tense scenes to connote danger and add the sense of mystery
and suspense. The use of high-key lighting and clinical colours
along with the grey brick walls, give the atmosphere of being
underground and secret with no windows and artificial lighting,
typically associated with spy organisations.
The low key lighting used when M is inside the building suggests that she is
working longer than others, long hours as there is a problem that can not wait
till the morning, as the audience can only see the from of M and her facial
expression but not the problem, they are intrigued as to what the mystery is.
Her clean and organised desk hints to the type of person that M is, seeming
organised and prepared, however this contrasts with the situation making her
seem out of her depths.
The low key lighting, again during the pool scene
seems to give the idea that Bond feels lost and
isolated, the blue colours connote with feelings of
sadness and perhaps Bond for the first time
showing his emotional vulnerability.
In the shot where the train crashes, the fact that the main source of
light comes from footlights and the train carriages, give a very dark
feel to the situation, keeping with the theme of destruction.
Furthermore the prop itself of a train carriage, seems as if it was
innocent people being affected and hurt because of all the fighting.
7. Mise-en-scene, plays a huge part in identifying what genre the film is, many used in the Skyfall trailer are typical of most action/spy films. such
as props like guns and explosions. In modern spy films the audience expects high tech, futuristic gadgets and this can be seen when Q talks of the
gun with fingerprint identification .
Another convention you would typically see are car chases, The car chase shown in the trailer is seen to take place in an exotic setting due to the
sandy terrain and blue cloudless sky. The audience would expect to see the variety of locations in the film and due to the high budget. There are
many, some of which are shown off in the trailers.
Bond is seen to be wearing a suit throughout much of the trailer, the only time he is not wearing a suit is when he is experiencing a ‘breakdown’,
the suit symbolises Bong being 007.
The woman in the trailer is seen as being a seductress , this can be seen by her costume of a black dress showing off a lot of skin and her dark
make-up that connotes danger. From her body language she seems like a strong woman who is powerful and in control
