2. Objectives
• Descriptions of Robotic Surgery
• Description of the hardware
and software used with robotic
surgery
• legal/ethical issues
• advantages/disadvantages of
robotic surgery
4. Hardware used in Robotic Surgery
• Robot with many arms
• Camera on one arm called an
endoscope
• Dissectors, scalpels, scissors and
forceps on other arms
• Joystick.
• Foot pedals .
(2Ezine Articles,)
The DaVinci Robot
5. The Endoscope
• Fiber optic instrument
• Inserted through a small incision
• Has a very tiny HIGH
DEFINITION video camera
• Shows the surgeon a
3-dimensional, magnified view
• Projects to a television screen.
(2Ezine Articles,)
6. Proprietary Software
• Closed-source software
• Protected from virus and spyware
• Highly sophisticated software
• More stable than free software
(6Wikipedia The Free Encyclopedia,)
7. Advantages of Robotic Surgery
• Less invasive
• Shorter hospital stay
• Less pain
• Less scaring
• Less blood loss
• FDA approved
(1The Bryn Mawr Urology Group,)
8. Disadvantages of Robotic Surgery
• Carries the same risk as any
other surgery heart attack,
stroke, death
• It is costly and affordability would
be limited.
(1The Bryn Mawr Urology Group,)
9. Ethical Issues in Robotic Surgery
• Time lag between surgeons
commands and action of robot could
harm the patient.
• Loss of power in an electrical failure.
(4Essortment,)
10. Moral Dilemma
Technology is neutral - it is neither good nor
evil .
It is up to us to breathe the moral and
ethical life into these technologies
And then apply them with
empathy and compassion
for each and every
patient .
11. Conclusions
• The rate of discovery of new
technology is outpacing the ability of
business, society, and healthcare to
integrate and apply.
• Robotic surgery is but one
example of such technology
that may reduce operative morbidity, hospital stay, and
recovery,
while potentially improving clinical outcomes,
but at what point do the benefits justify the increased
expense ?
