Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John. 14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from birth. 16 Many of the people of Israel will he bring back to the Lord their God. 17 And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous-- to make ready a people prepared for the Lord." 18 Zechariah asked the angel, "How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years." 19 The angel answered, "I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. 20 And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their proper time." 21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. 22 When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak.
Outer room = holy place – continual use (lamp, incense, bread) – any member of priesthood Inner Room = holy of holies – high priest – once a year – Yom Kippur (Sept/Oct, Oct 8. this year) – Autumnal equinox Strict prescriptions for him being able to enter this room Cloud of incense covering the ark – bull sacrifice for priest and his family – goat sacrifice for people – second goat (scape goat) sins of the people The way = ALL ABOUT SEPARATION (Verse 8) NO DIRECT ACCESS TO GOD (remember pioneer) (microwave waiting illustration) Conscience = effective barrier to God is not a material one, but an inward barrier – in the conscience, only when conscience is purified (guilt removed) that one is set free to approach God without reservation and offer him acceptable service and worship (animals useless in this regard ceremonial / symbolic removal of pollution) Food and Drink = Food laws & Washings = externalities, not for the inward, the conscience Time of the new order = time of reformation = reconstruction
Good things = New Order is Here, his entrance isn’t marked by a day of fasting, but gladness and song ascension of the Priest-King Outward justification no inward cleansings (white washed tombs) Cleanse conscience cleans inward sense of guilt
Mediator – Sacrifice is the basis of the new covenant, the blood of the new covenant Eternal inheritance – a better promise, covenant is eternal, so redemption is eternal
Sprinkle = joining the covenant community Presbyterian baptism (Hyssop – used to put blood on the doors at Exodus, used by Moses at this covenant, refused by Christ at crucifixion) Tabernacle – anointed with oil, sprinkled with blood set apart, sacred (like the priests)
(v. 26) Once for all – not eternally offering himself in heaven (i.e. R.C. Eucharist)
Law – matters of priesthood and sacrifice Image – Image vs. Copy, Christ as the exact image / representation of God
A body (“ears hast though digged for me”) – The body fashioned or created by God is given back to God as a “living sacrifice” When christ came into the world = Incarnation Your will Wholehearted obedience is the sacrifice which God really desires First Old Order Second New Order (Jesus) Made Holy Sanctified / made holy by Jesus fulfilling the will of God - Through his body (in this context his whole life) and his blood (sacrifice) ONCE FOR ALL Psalm 40:1 For the director of music. Of David. A psalm. I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. 2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD. 4 Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods. 5 Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare . 6 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but my ears you have pierced; burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require. 7 Then I said, "Here I am, I have come-- it is written about me in the scroll. 8 I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart." 9 I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly; I do not seal my lips, as you know, O LORD. 10 I do not hide your righteousness in my heart; I speak of your faithfulness and salvation. I do not conceal your love and your truth from the great assembly. 11 Do not withhold your mercy from me, O LORD; may your love and your truth always protect me. 12 For troubles without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails within me. 13 Be pleased, O LORD, to save me; O LORD, come quickly to help me. 14 May all who seek to take my life be put to shame and confusion; may all who desire my ruin be turned back in disgrace. 15 May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!" be appalled at their own shame. 16 But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation always say, "The LORD be exalted!" 17 Yet I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my deliverer; O my God, do not delay.
Sat down did the high priests sit down? (nope), duties never done, “It is finished” - Psalm 110 again Law in their hearts (Jeremiah 31) Sins remembered no more VERSUS annual reminder of sin Jeremiah 31:33 "This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time," declares the LORD. "I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest," declares the LORD. "For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more."
(19-25 = one sentence in Greek!) Confidence to enter vs high priest only, day of atonement only, under certain conditions only (vs. RC Church) – Priesthood of all believers (Revelation 5) What a privilege! Curtain Inner Veil (Christ’s sacrifice, veil torn, body given up) House of God (people of God) Sprinkle (Blood that makes even conscience clear), Washed = baptism NEXT SLIDE
Draw near fully cleansed (inside and out) Hope Christ as our anchor, based on unfailing promise of God Hope is PROFESSED / CONFESSED Together Encourage one another, can’t happen at a distance
Sin deliberately – sinning with a high hand, no atonement in the Old Testament for intentional sin, - deserting the living God, renunciation of Christianity, outright apostasy, most flagrant kind of contempt - abandon the truth (the sacrifice of Christ) then there is no other sacrifice - Not a sin of ignorance but of rejecting known truth - a man sets aside the entirety of the Law of Moses Old order lesser to greater argument It is mine to avenge (Deut 32:35) The Lord will judge his people (36)
Like before (6:4-8) – warning followed by assurance and encouragement Confidence – earlier = confidence to enter the most high here = COURAGE - Loss of possessions compared with richly rewarded Persevere = patience in fulfillment of the promise Coming one John the Baptist “Are you the one who was to come” Habakkuk 2:3 For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay . 4 "See, he is puffed up; his desires are not upright-- but the righteous will live by his faith-- 5 indeed, wine betrays him; he is arrogant and never at rest. Because he is as greedy as the grave and like death is never satisfied, he gathers to himself all the nations and takes captive all the peoples.
