FACTORS INFLUENCING
FACULTY STAFF RELATIONSHIP
AND
TECHNIQUES OF WORKING TOGETHER
INTRODUCTION
No man is an island unto himself
We mean the people need other people
- John Domne
Our lives are profoundly affected by our relationships. Some relationship are natural;
other relationship are formed as result of the choice we make.
Man as social being has to lead on with all the people in the different walks of life.
Seven factors to build up a relationship
• Communication upward, downward, lateral
• Commitment
• Trust worthiness
• Self control
• Caring/sharing – Empathy, sympathy
• Self Awareness
• Tenderness
In short is it the life skills which influence the techniques of working together.
Life skills defined in a general way mean a mix of knowledge behaviour,
attitudes and values. They include competencies such as critical thinking, creativity,
ability to organize, social and communication skills, adaptability, problem solving
ability to co-operative on a democratic basis to shape a peaceful future. Life skills are
developed as a result of a constructive processing of information, impressions,
encounters and experiences – both individual and social – that are part of one’s daily
life and work.
5
The environment around you changes, you can attribute success and failure to
things you have control over, or to forces outside your influence. Which orientation
you choose has a bearing on your long-term success.
This orientation is known as your “locus of control”. Its study dates back to the
1960s, with Julian Rotter’s investigation into how people’s behaviour and attitudes
affected the outcomes of their lives.
Locus of control describes the degree to which individuals perceive that
outcomes result from their own behaviours, or from forces that are external to
themselves. This produces a continuum with external control at one end internal
control at the other:
Figure 1: Locus of Control
External Internal
Locus of Control Locus of Control
Outcomes outsides your Outcomes within your
Control-determined by control – determined
“fate” and independent of your hard work, attributes or
your hard work or decisions
decisions
People who develop an internal locus of control believe that they are
responsible for their own success. Those with an external locus of control believe that
external forces, like luck, determine their outcomes.
Benefits of an Internal Locus of Control
In general, people with an internal locus of control:
• Engage in activities that will improve their situation.
• Emphasize striving for achievement.
• Work hard to develop their knowledge, skills and abilities.
• Are inquisitive, and try to figure out why things turned out the way they did.
• Take note of information that they can use to create positive outcomes in the
future.
• Have a more participative management style.
6
Managing the Drawbacks of Strong Internal Locus of Control
People with an internal locus of control are generally more successful, for very
good reasons.
However there can be times when having an external locus of control can be an
advantage, particularly in situations where people need to be considerate and more
easy-going. People with a strong internal locus of control tend to be very
achievement-oriented, and this can leave people around them feeling “trampled” or
“bruised.” And with a very strong internal locus of control, there is also a tendency to
want to control everything. If you have a strong internal locus of control, make sure
you pay attention to the feelings of people around you - otherwise you’ll seem
arrogant, and people may not want to work with you.
Tips for Developing an Internal Locus of Control.
Recognize the basic fact that you always have a choice. Making no choice is
actually a choice in and of itself, and it’s your choice to allow other people or events
decide for you.
Set goals for yourself and note how, by working towards these and achieving
these, you are controlling what happens in your life. As you do this, you’ll find that
your self-confidence quickly builds.(This is something we deal with in great detail
within our Life plan workbook goal-setting and life-design program.)
Develop your decision making and problem solving skills so that you can feel
more confident, and in control of what happens. With these tool, you’ll find that you
can understand and navigate through situations that would otherwise damage you.
Pay attention to your self-talk. When you hear yourself saying things like, “I
have no choice” or ‘There’s nothing I can do”, step back and remind yourself that you
do, in fact, have some degree of control. It’s your choice whether you exercise it or
not.
Learning to be – Personal abilities
• Skills for increasing internal locus of control.

rights, strengths and weaknesses.
• Goal setting skills
7
• Self evaluation /self assessment / self monitoring skills
• Skills for managing stress
• Times management
• Positive thinking
• Relaxation techniques.
SKILLS FOR MANAGING FEELING
• Anger management
• Dealing with grief and anxiety
• Coping skills for dealing loss, abuse, trauma
SELF CONFIDENCE;
1. Greet everybody with a smile. A smile can go a long way to convey self-
confidence to other. When other think you feel confident, they respond to your
confidence, which in turn, builds more self-confidence. (Yes it is circular.)
2. Be thankful for what others do. Don’t downplay or overplay your
appreciation for the contributions of other people. The ability to graciously receive
from other is a mark of individual self-esteem.
3. Be modest about your accomplishments. Those who have true confidence in
their abilities don’t waste time bragging about their accomplishments.
4. Stop talking about your problems. Firstly, people don’t what to hear about
your problems. Everyone is likely facing some sort challenge in their life and yours is
not anymore important to others. Secondly, negative self-talk, whether internal or
external, will only serve to eat away at your self-esteem.
5. Respond to difficult circumstances. The old adage says, “when the going
gets tough, the tough get going.” The best response to difficult circumstances is to
tackle the challenges. Look for solutions to the problem(s). As you focus on working
through the difficulty, You’ll find you’re developing more confidence to face
problems.
8
6. Learn from your mistakes. You’re not going to be perfect every time you try
something. Don’t view set-backs and failures as an end. Look for lessons you can
take the experience, move back to step 5 and try again.
SELF ESTEEM
Building esteem is a first step towards your happiness and a better life. If you
have low confidence or low self esteem you will find it impossible to be the person
you could be and your happiness will be limited.
Self esteem increases your confidence. If you have confidence you will respect
yourself and then you can respect others, improve your relationships and become
happier.... this is not a selfish goal as you will contribute more and share yourself with
the world and those around you.
Low esteem causes depression, unhappiness, insecurity and low confidence.
Other’s desires may take preference over yours. Inner criticism, that nagging voice of
disapproval inside you, causes you to stumble at every challenge and challenges seem
impossible.
• Look for a model (someone who has self confidence) and learn from them.
What is it they do that makes them confident, how do they act?
• Focus on your achievements rather than you failures. If you do find yourself
thinking about how you failed then look at what you managed to do right and
how you could correct what you did next time.
• Learn how to feel good about yourself
• Act as if you were self confident! You will feel more confident.
• Focus on who you are and what you like about yourself. Why do your friends
like you?
• Prepare thoroughly for any task so that you can be sure you are ready.
• Work on any skills you need to do what you what, you can never be over
trained or over skilled for any challenge if life.
• Work on your relaxation skills.
• Always smile and stand up straight
• Set reachable goals for yourself and break difficult tasks into smaller steps
9
• Reward yourself when you succeed no matter how small the achievement.
• Finally, I advice you not to be too competitive or compare yourself with others.
Be yourself and accept that life is not a race against others but your self
confidence depends on you and your personal needs.
If you find yourself down a lot and have a hard time feeling good, you may be dealing
with low self-esteem. Below you will find 3 ways to build your self esteem.
Give credit where credit is do:
When you accomplish a particular task give yourself credit for doing
something successfully. It may be something as small as thanking someone for
something. That is a success because you acknowledge something that someone has
done for you. So, give yourself credit for the things you do. I bet if you really thought
about it, you do a lot of successful things throughout the day. Start giving yourself
credit for that.
Say good things to yourself:
When accidentally drop or spill something, what are the first words out of your
month? If the words dummy, idiot, stupid, or any other negative works come out of
your month, try not reacting to the situation. Take a deep breath and move on
knowing we all have accidents. The point here is not to react to the situation. Give
yourself a break, think good thoughts about yourself, and don’t forget to laugh.
Accept the good in you:
Just like giving yourself credit for the success you have each day, acknowledge
the things you know how to do well. There are things you can do better than anyone.
If you gave it some thought you can come up with a number of things you do well.
What are some of the things you do well? Think about it, and when you do, write
them down. So, the next time you are feeling down go back to the list you made and
accept the good in you.
Building your self-esteem in going to help you take bigger risks and have a
more fulfilling life. With a high self-esteem, you can accomplish anything. You will
find yourself sticking with your goals, and taking on any challenge that comes your
way. Building self-esteem does take time; however, anything that is going to help you
live your life to the fullest is worth it. Try finding someone who can help you along
the way, a friend, a mentor, or even a coach. You can do it, I know you can!
GOAL SETTING
1. Decide what you want to accomplish. The goal should be very specific. If
you want to close more sales, how many more sales do you want to close? What do
10
you want your closing ratio to be? If you want to move into a different job, what are
the characteristic of that job?
2. Determine a deadline for accomplishment. A goal must have a deadline. If
you do not have a date on it, the goal is only a wish or a dream.
3. Determine that the goal is believable to you. You must feel that the goal can
be realized. If you believe it is impossible to achieve, you will never take the action
necessary to make the goal a reality.
4. Where are you now? Take a current inventory. You will never known how
far you have to go if you don’t know where you already are.
5. What obstacles do you need to overcome? Is there something that may make
it difficult to achieve your goal? Be aware of the obstacle so you can make plans to
overcome it.
6. What knowledge will you need to acquire? Will you need to earn a
professional designation or take certain courses? Will you need to research new
markets?
7. What organizations and groups should you associate with? Are there
certain groups of people that can make it easier for you to accomplish your goal?
How can you become affiliated with them?
8. What are the benefits to you? Write down as many benefits as possible. The
more benefits you can come up with, the more likely you will be to stick to the goal
until it is achieved.
9. Develop an action plan. Determine the specific steps that will be necessary to
achieve the goal. Start at the accomplishment of the goal and work backwards.
10. Visualize yourself accomplishing the goal. See yourself in clear details as if
you have already achieved the goal. If you want to close more sales, see yourself
closing more sales easily. Do this over and again until it becomes part of your
subconscious mind.
11. Take daily action towards the goal. Dreams and goals require action. The
best goal in the world will never materialize unless consistent action is taken.
12. Resolve to never quit. Decide that you will never give up, even when
times get tough, until your goal is reached.
Taking the efforts to complete the steps in goal setting is not easy. However, when
you follow these steps, your success is almost assured.
11
CAUSES OF STRESS
• Work overload
• Difficult co-workers
• Demanding bosses
• Fear and uncertainty about these tough economic times
Don’t despair there really are things you can do to relieve work stress. Most of
them are easy enough you can start today and begin seeing results immediately.
Overloaded And Overwhelmed
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your workload, the first step should be to
examine your schedule. Maybe you can change your routine or rearrange your
schedule so you have more time in the day to get the job done.
Perhaps there are some tasks you can eliminate or spend less time on. You can
also try to delegate the work to others in your office or even outsource some work to
freelancers online.
If you’re still feeling swamped, you’ll want to speak to your boss.
Communication is the key to working things out and finding a way to lighten your
load.
Co-Workers Who Don’t See Eye to Eye
There are always going to be difficult co-workers at every job. It’s something
you’ll face no matter where you work. Even if there’s someone who is just a pain to
deal with for one reason or another, you don’t have to let it stress you out.
If you have a co-workers that’s continually trying to ruffle your feathers,
confront the issue. You may want to do this with your boss present as to avoid any
chance the difficult co-worker can turn on you or say things that didn’t really happen.
If the problem still continues, however, and you simply can’t ignore it any longer, see
if you can get moved to a different department or area. If not, then I suggest killing
the difficult co-worker with kindness. when you turn the other cheek, so to speak, the
offender will usually back off eventually and leave you alone or better yet, befriend
you. Either way you get the desired results.
A Boss Who Rules With An Iron Fist
Okay, what do you do when your boss is demanding? Remember, your boss is
your boss and it’s usually not wise to come across in a confrontational manner.
However, you can try talking to them in a peaceful, non-confrontational tone.
12
To do this, schedule a meeting ahead of time and write out your thoughts. This
will help you state your case and stay on topic. Stick to the issues and the issues only.
Never place blame or come across as if you know better than your boss. This kind of
talk could only lead to a worse situation, if not get you fired.
However, if speaking your mind doesn’t seems to make your boss any less
demanding, then you’ll have to let it roll off your back. Easier said than done, I know.
But, it can be done with determination and effort.
Questioning Your Future
Right now, probably the biggest cause of stress in the workplace is fear of
uncertainty in these tough economic times. Even if you’ve done everything to ensure
your position at your company, like increasing your value as an employee, there are
still no guarantees in this economy.
STRESS MANAGEMENT
The best way to relieve work related stress is to work out regularly. Getting
regular exercise helps relieve stress of any sort, but especially work related stress. If
you don’t belong to a gym, begin working out at home. Going for brisk walks
regularly also greatly reduces stress.
Top 5 Work Stress Relieving Strategies
1. Examine your schedule, delegate, outsource, or talk to your boss when you’re
overloaded.
2. Talk to a difficult co-worker or kill them with kindness.
3. Communicate with your boss when he’s too demanding.
4. Prepare for the future when you fear losing your job.
5. Work out regularly at home or at the gym.
Stress has become a part of your everyday life, but it doesn’t have to control
your life. By incorporating these strategies, you can overcome the major causes of
stress in your workplace in no time!
TIME MANAGEMENT
Time management skills are your abilities to recognize and solve personal time
management problems. The goal of these time management lessons is to show you
what you can do to improve those skills.
With good time management skills you are in control of your time and your
life, of your stress and energy levels. You make progress at work. You are able to
13
maintain balance between your work, personal, and family lives. You have enough
flexibility to respond to surprises or new opportunities.
All time management skills are learnable, More than likely you will see much
improvement from simply becoming aware of you essence and causes of common
personal time management problems. With these time management lessons, you can
see better which time management techniques are not most relevant for your situation.
Just get started with them. Many of your problems gradually disappear.
If you already know how you should be managing your time, but you still don’t
do it, don’t give up. What you may be overlooking is the psychological side of your
time management skills, psychological obstacles hidden behind your personality.
Depending on your personal situation, such obstacles may be the primary
reason why you procrastinate, have difficulties saying no, delegating, or making time
management decisions.
The psychological component of your time management skills can also be dealt
with. The time management skills information below will point at a relevant solution
for your situation.
POSITIVE THINKING
Positive thinking aids with stress management. Having a positive attitude is
shown to have health benefits, such as reducing the risk of heart disease and lowering
the risk of depression. A person with a positive attitude is considered an optimist and a
person with a negative attitude is deemed a pessimist. Negative thinking can be turned
into positive thinking. Developing a positive attitude is a process that takes time and
practice as it involves creating a new habit. There are many activities that can be done
to foster a positive attitude.
JOURNALING
1. Journaling is the practice of putting your thoughts on paper. When journaling,
write as if you were having a conversation with yourself. Write down your emotions,
what bothers you and what your reactions are to things. Write down whatever comes
to mind. Writing down acts as a release and provides perspective. Try to focus on
positive aspects and past accomplishments. Journaling does not have to be neat and
well-written; a journal is private and personal and is not meant to be seen by others.
Associate with Positive People
2. Affiliate yourself with positive and upbeat people. People are often a result of
their environment and surrounding yourself with positive people will have a positive
14
effect. Negative people try to drag you down and when possible, avoid spending time
with people who have a negative effect on you. Make it a practice to converse with
positive people. Seek out positive relationships at work and with your family. When
you surround yourself with enthusiastic and supportive relationships, you will pick up
their attitudes and gain strength to pursue your own deems. You have the ability to
decide who you spend time with.
Positive Affirmations
3. Positive affirmations are brief upbeat statements that can be repeated or left on
notes where they will be seen most often, such as the refrigerator or desk at work.
Affirmations should be optimistic, in the present tense and say something that you are
looking for. Keeping them short makes them similar to recall and recite.
Positive affirmations contradict negative thoughts. When used properly,
affirmations ward off negative thoughts. Affirmations are not just repetition.
Affirmations are a way of becoming more attentive of your daily thoughts and words.
Find Humor
4. Let yourself laugh, find humor in the simple things and have fun. Don’t take
things too seriously and learn to laugh at yourself. People enjoy being around others
who find humor in embarrassing moments. Laughter helps to elevate moods. If you
find yourself having negative thoughts, read jokes watch a comedy or just behave silly
sometimes. Medical studies show that laughter helps to reduce stress. A recent study
in The Journal of Primary Prevention showed that participants who laughed for 15
minutes a day for three weeks had an increase in optimism and positive emotions.
Practice Gratitude
5. Counting your blessings is another positive thinking technique. Everyone has
something to be thankful for. Ask yourself what you are grateful for, whether it is
having shelter, clothes on your back, children or your health. Make a list of things
you are appreciative for and write them down. Focus on what you do have and not on
what you do not have. Before you go to bed or when you are feeling down, pull out
the list and review your blessings. Another way to practice gratitude is to thank
people who have helped you in your life.
RELAXATION
Mediation – Relax wit sustained concentration
15
Self-Hypnosis
Using music or Relaxation Tapes
Physical Relaxation Techniques
Yoga
ANGER MANAGEMENT
1. Take a ‘timeout.’ Although it may seem cliche, counting to 10 before reacting
really can defuse your temper.
2. Get some space. Take a break from the person you’re angry with until your
frustrations subside a bit.
3. Once You’re clam, express your anger, It’s healthy to express your
frustration in a non confrontational way.Stewing about it can make the situation
worse.
4. Get some exercise. Physical activity can provide an outlet for your emotions,
especially if you’re about to erupt. Go for a brisk walk or a run, swim, lift
weights or shoot baskets.
5. Think carefully before you say anything. Otherwise, you’re likely to say
something you’ll regret. It can be helpful to write down what you want to say
so that you can stick to the issues. When you’re angry, it’s easy to get side
tracked.
6. Indentify solutions to the situation. Instead of focusing on what made you
mad, work with the person who angered you to resolve the issue at hand.
7. Use “I” statements when describing the problem. This will help you to
avoid criticizing or placing blame, which can make the other person angry or
resentful – and increase tension. For instance, say. ‘I’ am upset you didn’t help
with the housework this evening, “instead of, “You should have helped with
the housework”.
8. Don’t hold a grudge. If you can forgive the other person, it will help you
both, It’s unrealistic to expect everyone to behave exactly as you want.
9. Use humor to release tension. Lightening up can help diffuse tension. Don’t
use sarcasm, though – it’s can hurt feelings and make things worse.
10.Practice relaxation skills. Learning skills to relax and de-stress can also help
control your temper when it may flare up. Practise deep-breathing exercises,
visualize a relaxing scene, or repeat a calming word or pharse to yourself, such
16
as “Take it easy.” Other proven ways to ease anger include listening to music,
writing in a journal and doing yoga.

  • 5. FACTORS INFLUENCING FACULTY STAFF RELATIONSHIP AND TECHNIQUES OF WORKING TOGETHER INTRODUCTION No man is an island unto himself We mean the people need other people - John Domne Our lives are profoundly affected by our relationships. Some relationship are natural; other relationship are formed as result of the choice we make. Man as social being has to lead on with all the people in the different walks of life. Seven factors to build up a relationship • Communication upward, downward, lateral • Commitment • Trust worthiness • Self control • Caring/sharing – Empathy, sympathy • Self Awareness • Tenderness In short is it the life skills which influence the techniques of working together. Life skills defined in a general way mean a mix of knowledge behaviour, attitudes and values. They include competencies such as critical thinking, creativity, ability to organize, social and communication skills, adaptability, problem solving ability to co-operative on a democratic basis to shape a peaceful future. Life skills are developed as a result of a constructive processing of information, impressions, encounters and experiences – both individual and social – that are part of one’s daily life and work. 5
  • 6. The environment around you changes, you can attribute success and failure to things you have control over, or to forces outside your influence. Which orientation you choose has a bearing on your long-term success. This orientation is known as your “locus of control”. Its study dates back to the 1960s, with Julian Rotter’s investigation into how people’s behaviour and attitudes affected the outcomes of their lives. Locus of control describes the degree to which individuals perceive that outcomes result from their own behaviours, or from forces that are external to themselves. This produces a continuum with external control at one end internal control at the other: Figure 1: Locus of Control External Internal Locus of Control Locus of Control Outcomes outsides your Outcomes within your Control-determined by control – determined “fate” and independent of your hard work, attributes or your hard work or decisions decisions People who develop an internal locus of control believe that they are responsible for their own success. Those with an external locus of control believe that external forces, like luck, determine their outcomes. Benefits of an Internal Locus of Control In general, people with an internal locus of control: • Engage in activities that will improve their situation. • Emphasize striving for achievement. • Work hard to develop their knowledge, skills and abilities. • Are inquisitive, and try to figure out why things turned out the way they did. • Take note of information that they can use to create positive outcomes in the future. • Have a more participative management style. 6
  • 7. Managing the Drawbacks of Strong Internal Locus of Control People with an internal locus of control are generally more successful, for very good reasons. However there can be times when having an external locus of control can be an advantage, particularly in situations where people need to be considerate and more easy-going. People with a strong internal locus of control tend to be very achievement-oriented, and this can leave people around them feeling “trampled” or “bruised.” And with a very strong internal locus of control, there is also a tendency to want to control everything. If you have a strong internal locus of control, make sure you pay attention to the feelings of people around you - otherwise you’ll seem arrogant, and people may not want to work with you. Tips for Developing an Internal Locus of Control. Recognize the basic fact that you always have a choice. Making no choice is actually a choice in and of itself, and it’s your choice to allow other people or events decide for you. Set goals for yourself and note how, by working towards these and achieving these, you are controlling what happens in your life. As you do this, you’ll find that your self-confidence quickly builds.(This is something we deal with in great detail within our Life plan workbook goal-setting and life-design program.) Develop your decision making and problem solving skills so that you can feel more confident, and in control of what happens. With these tool, you’ll find that you can understand and navigate through situations that would otherwise damage you. Pay attention to your self-talk. When you hear yourself saying things like, “I have no choice” or ‘There’s nothing I can do”, step back and remind yourself that you do, in fact, have some degree of control. It’s your choice whether you exercise it or not. Learning to be – Personal abilities • Skills for increasing internal locus of control. • Self esteem/confidence building skills • Self awareness skills including awareness of right, influences values, attitudes, rights, strengths and weaknesses. • Goal setting skills 7
  • 8. • Self evaluation /self assessment / self monitoring skills • Skills for managing stress • Times management • Positive thinking • Relaxation techniques. SKILLS FOR MANAGING FEELING • Anger management • Dealing with grief and anxiety • Coping skills for dealing loss, abuse, trauma SELF CONFIDENCE; 1. Greet everybody with a smile. A smile can go a long way to convey self- confidence to other. When other think you feel confident, they respond to your confidence, which in turn, builds more self-confidence. (Yes it is circular.) 2. Be thankful for what others do. Don’t downplay or overplay your appreciation for the contributions of other people. The ability to graciously receive from other is a mark of individual self-esteem. 3. Be modest about your accomplishments. • 9. 6. Learn from your mistakes. You’re not going to be perfect every time you try something. Don’t view set-backs and failures as an end. Look for lessons you can take the experience, move back to step 5 and try again. SELF ESTEEM Building esteem is a first step towards your happiness and a better life. If you have low confidence or low self esteem you will find it impossible to be the person you could be and your happiness will be limited. Self esteem increases your confidence. If you have confidence you will respect yourself and then you can respect others, improve your relationships and become happier.... this is not a selfish goal as you will contribute more and share yourself with the world and those around you. Low esteem causes depression, unhappiness, insecurity and low confidence. Other’s desires may take preference over yours. Inner criticism, that nagging voice of disapproval inside you, causes you to stumble at every challenge and challenges seem impossible. • Look for a model (someone who has self confidence) and learn from them. What is it they do that makes them confident, how do they act? • Focus on your achievements rather than you failures. If you do find yourself thinking about how you failed then look at what you managed to do right and how you could correct what you did next time. • Learn how to feel good about yourself • Act as if you were self confident! You will feel more confident. • Focus on who you are and what you like about yourself. Why do your friends like you? • Prepare thoroughly for any task so that you can be sure you are ready. • Work on any skills you need to do what you what, you can never be over trained or over skilled for any challenge if life. • Work on your relaxation skills. • Always smile and stand up straight • Set reachable goals for yourself and break difficult tasks into smaller steps 9
  • 10. • Reward yourself when you succeed no matter how small the achievement. • Finally, I advice you not to be too competitive or compare yourself with others. Be yourself and accept that life is not a race against others but your self confidence depends on you and your personal needs. If you find yourself down a lot and have a hard time feeling good, you may be dealing with low self-esteem. Below you will find 3 ways to build your self esteem. Give credit where credit is do: When you accomplish a particular task give yourself credit for doing something successfully. It may be something as small as thanking someone for something. That is a success because you acknowledge something that someone has done for you. So, give yourself credit for the things you do. I bet if you really thought about it, you do a lot of successful things throughout the day. Start giving yourself credit for that. Say good things to yourself: When accidentally drop or spill something, what are the first words out of your month? If the words dummy, idiot, stupid, or any other negative works come out of your month, try not reacting to the situation. Take a deep breath and move on knowing we all have accidents. The point here is not to react to the situation. Give yourself a break, think good thoughts about yourself, and don’t forget to laugh. Accept the good in you: Just like giving yourself credit for the success you have each day, acknowledge the things you know how to do well. There are things you can do better than anyone. If you gave it some thought you can come up with a number of things you do well. What are some of the things you do well? Think about it, and when you do, write them down. So, the next time you are feeling down go back to the list you made and accept the good in you. Building your self-esteem in going to help you take bigger risks and have a more fulfilling life. With a high self-esteem, you can accomplish anything. You will find yourself sticking with your goals, and taking on any challenge that comes your way. Building self-esteem does take time; however, anything that is going to help you live your life to the fullest is worth it. Try finding someone who can help you along the way, a friend, a mentor, or even a coach. You can do it, I know you can! GOAL SETTING 1. Decide what you want to accomplish. The goal should be very specific. If you want to close more sales, how many more sales do you want to close? What do 10
  • 11. you want your closing ratio to be? If you want to move into a different job, what are the characteristic of that job? 2. Determine a deadline for accomplishment. A goal must have a deadline. If you do not have a date on it, the goal is only a wish or a dream. 3. Determine that the goal is believable to you. You must feel that the goal can be realized. If you believe it is impossible to achieve, you will never take the action necessary to make the goal a reality. 4. Where are you now? Take a current inventory. You will never known how far you have to go if you don’t know where you already are. 5. What obstacles do you need to overcome? Is there something that may make it difficult to achieve your goal? Be aware of the obstacle so you can make plans to overcome it. 6. What knowledge will you need to acquire? Will you need to earn a professional designation or take certain courses? Will you need to research new markets? 7. What organizations and groups should you associate with? Are there certain groups of people that can make it easier for you to accomplish your goal? How can you become affiliated with them? 8. What are the benefits to you? Write down as many benefits as possible. The more benefits you can come up with, the more likely you will be to stick to the goal until it is achieved. 9. Develop an action plan. Determine the specific steps that will be necessary to achieve the goal. Start at the accomplishment of the goal and work backwards. 10. Visualize yourself accomplishing the goal. See yourself in clear details as if you have already achieved the goal. If you want to close more sales, see yourself closing more sales easily. Do this over and again until it becomes part of your subconscious mind. 11. Take daily action towards the goal. Dreams and goals require action. The best goal in the world will never materialize unless consistent action is taken. 12. Resolve to never quit. Decide that you will never give up, even when times get tough, until your goal is reached. Taking the efforts to complete the steps in goal setting is not easy. However, when you follow these steps, your success is almost assured. 11
