Welcome to What the Tweet is Twitter, my name is Sandi Adams and this is my partner in crime, Freda Williams. We are Technology Project Specialist for the Cherokee County School District. One of our responsibilities is to research, develop training and to help integrate new and emerging technologies. Well about a year and a half ago I stumbled upon this one. (Play Video) and thought to myself “What the tweet IS twitter?
Now I know out of this group, there are probably several categories of potential tweeters. The first,( twitter drop out) has set up a twitter account, maybe tweeted once or twice, wondered what the big deal was and moved on…or maybe you are a lurker. The second does not have a twitter account(twirgins) and is here to see what the buzz about it is. The last group, probably has a twitter account and will most likely be tweeting from their phones while this presentation is going on!! Sooo I am going to start at the beginning and hopefully answer questions you might have and hopefully get you excited about this communication tool. Basically Twitter is a social network where you post short bursts of thoughts and information.
So What is twitter REALLY? Twitter is a combination of a text message, mini blog, and instant message. It is a short (only 140 character) message that is sent to “followers” people who “subscribed to what you have to say” or received if you choose to follow that person. In the past 12 months Twitter has becomeahousehold word and literally exploded 43% with the addition of a single user.
It has grown over 2000 % in the past year and it grew 43% with the addition of just one user…..Twitter is a giant conversation, a real time search engine a combination of a text message, mini blog, and instant message. It is a short (only 140 character) message that is sent to “followers” people who “subscribed to what you have to say” or received if you choose to follow that person.
It is instant, it is concise and it can be ANYTHING! It is an instantaneous way to communicate not just to one person like text or IM BUT to potentially millions! It has so many uses from finding a job or gardening tips or finding and sharing the latest web 2.0 applications So lets take a look at some of the things people are doing with twitter.
On April 10th, 2008, James Karl Buck and his translator were arrested by the Egyptian police while covering an anti-government protest. James, a grad student from Berkeley, was able to tweet one word while being taken away by Egyptian authorities: Arrested. This one update sparked his friends and followers into action, eventually leading to his university hiring a lawyer on his behalf and his release a day later.
Before we discuss how you can become part of this wonderful information gathering tool, I want to let you know that I have created a Twitter wiki for this conference. All the resources discussed are linked from here as well as articles, lesson plans and more. The web address can be found on the card you received when you came in.
First things first, a twitter account is free. To set one up you might want to consider a few things. Your username which is what you will be known by. Have an image ready to represent you. Go through settings with them. Okay NOW WHAT?
What do I say? And Who is Listening?Beginning feelings of twitter
While using twitter from your desktop is easy and what we just took a look at was some of the basics of twitter there are hunderds of tools that make twitter more user friendly, effective and easily to access.
