• 60% of the population are small or marginal farmers.
Land holding less than 1.5 acres
• Average food sufficiency six months.
• Average annual income from agriculture is 6000 to
8000 rupees
• They migrate to the eastern districts for their
livelihood after kharif.
Medium term goal of the organisation for small and
marginal holders
• Year long food-grain from own source and 20000
cash in a year.
Strategy
– Reduction of risk in farming system by ensuring irrigation
through DBI
– Decentralized water bodies in command area (HAPA)
– Intensification of crops (SRI) and diversification of crops

7. Sectoral initiatives
• Intensification of crops like mustard, cucumber and
watermelon in DBI command area and adjacent other
areas in the same village.
• 1000 farmers cultivated mustards.
• Cucumber with 300 families in DBI area. 500 families
total.
• Watermelon with 150 families in DBI. 500 families total.
• Potato cultivation by 300 families in DBI and 500 families
total
• Technology transfer and handholding to the farmers.
• Market linkages.

8. Results
• Good standing crop of mustard, ready to harvest,
estimates 5 quintal per acre. 15000 rupees per acre
income.
• Cucumber harvesting just started not yet complete. 50
quintal per acre 30000 rupees per acre.
• Watermelon not yet harvested.
• Five new whole sale markets developed in our area
through market linkage initiative.
• Everyday around 150 tons of cucumber is going to
bigger markets.

9. Government support
• Orchard plants like banana, mango, guava, lichchi to 250
families.
• Floriculture plants to 50 families.
• Onion, ol, vegetable seeds to 350 families.
• 25 HAPA from MGNREGA in DBI command area.
• Two large DBI intake tanks renovation through Agri
Irrigation department.
• Pumpset and spray machine to 75 families.
• Will start work on Sanitaion by NBA-MGNREGA project
to DBI families in one block.

10. Aditya Mahato, Nuniachatra
• Total land 2 acre earlier income Rs.18000
• Total land is in DBI command area.
• Paddy lalat – 30 quintal – Rs. 36000
• He dose not get water in winter so no
winter crop.

11. Monohar Mahato, Nuniachatra
• Total land 1.5 acre – earlier income from paddy, little bit of winter
crop from tank by lift was Rs. 11500
• Land in command area 0.5 acre
• Lalat paddy in kharif in 0.5 acre.
• 8 quintal – Rs. 10112
• Mustard B9 in 0.25 acre – production 1.7 quintal – RS.5100
• Pioneer mustard in 0.1 acre - 0.75 quintal – Rs 2250.
• Potato in 0.1 decimal – 17 quintal – Rs.10200
• Total income Rs. 27662. = Rs. 30000
• Put a new shed in his house.
• Purchased a new pump.
• Stopped migration and wage labour.

12. Dhananjay Mahato, Jawra
• Total land 2 acre – earlier income from paddy, little bit of winter crop
from tank by lift was Rs. 11800
• Land in command area 0.66 acre
• Lalat paddy in kharif in 0.60 acre. - 11 quintal – Rs. 14080
• Tomato in kharif 0.6 decimal
• Mustard B9 in 0.1 acre – production 0.73 quintal – RS. 3000
• Potato in 0.07 decimal – 7 quintal – Rs.4200
• Cucumber in 0.5 acre – 30 quintal till date – Rs. 18000 till date
• Total income Rs. 39280. = Rs. 42000
• Renovated two rooms.
• Private tutor for three children.
• Purchased cycle for her elder daughter.
• Stopped migration and wage labour.

13. Innovations
• Small water bodies in the command area are
filled with water from DBI and will be used
afterwards.
• Pumps are used from small dug well near the
DBI outlet to irrigate areas outside the
command area.
• Delivery pipes are used from the outlet to
take water to the higher plots.
• When water level getting lower than the
intake level then pump is used and system is
used as lift irrigation.
