Bathing the newborn
1. BATING THE NEW BORN
PURPOSE:
1- To cleanse the infant.
2- To observe the infant.
EQUIPMENT:
1- Bath basin with water at a temperature of 1000 F.
2- Bat mat.
3- Receiver.
4- Soap.
5- Towel
6- Clean Clothing.
7- Comb.
8- Pails for soiled clothing’s
9- Forceps in container of disinfectant solution
PROCEDURE:
1- Wash nurses hands before going to a different baby.
2- Remove baby’s clothing handling the baby gently.
3- Place a towel with the baby, on to the bath mat on the bathing table.
4- Clean the eyes with sterile water (pickup forceps are used to remove these from the container) .Use each swab only
once, swabbing from the inner corner outwards, Never use the same swab for both eyes. If the nostrils need cleaning, do
this with cotton rolled into a thin roll.
5- Wrap the towel around the baby, gently restraining the arms at the sides with the left arm supporting the occuiput,
baby’s legs resting on the nurse hips and gently held there with the nurse’s left elbow, hold the head over the basin and
wash the face with the right hand. Do not use soap for this and avoid getting any water in the baby’s eyes or mouth.
Dry the face.
6- Still holding the head over the basin. Soap the hair and neck, wash well on the bath mat and dry head and neck
thoroughly. Pay particular attention to the folds of the neck. To expose these hold the head to one side ( this will stretch
the skin of the neck) dry well repeat for the other side lift baby’s chin up and dry the front of the neck thoroughly dry
back of neck.
7- Soap front of the trunk and extremities, giving particular attention to the axilla and groins. Rinse well and dry
thoroughly. Wash the back, rinse and thoroughly dry. Make quite sure that the axilla, groins and folds of the elbow are
completely dry).
8- In boy babies, gently push the foreskin back and cleanse with swabs. In girl babies separate the labia gently and wash
with swabs.
9- Cleanse the cord with spirited swabs.
10- Dress the baby quickly to avoid chilling.
2. BATING A BABY
REQUISITES
Water for eyes Basin
Power Clean clothing
Receiver Containers for soiled clothing napkins.
Oil Jug of water 1000 F
Soil Cotton swabs.
PROCEDURE:
Collect all necessary articles and place in a convenient position. Make sure that the room is free from droughts. Close the
windows arrange screen of necessary. Temperature of the room should be 70 o F. when everything is ready, roll sleeves to elbow and
wash hands well. Place the baby’s crib sheet over the mat and lay the baby on this remove the baby’s clothing and wight the baby.
Swab the eyes, clean the nose and wash face and ears without soap. Warp the crib sheet around the baby , gently restraining
the arms at the sides . with the left hand supporting the head, hold it over the basin, sopa hair, rub well to get hair and scalp clean and
rinse. Palce the baby on the mat and dry the hair. Older babies need not have their washed daily.
Then the nurse should soap both her hands and soap the baby’s body front and back. Place the baby in a basin or sink to rines.
To the creases of the skin. Place the baby on the towe, dry him well paying special attention to the crease soap the skin. If left wett
the skin becomes soft and sore clean the umbilicus carefully.
In male babies, gently bush back the freskin of the penis and clean with ward wter and cotton. In female babies separate the
liaba and geletnly cleanse with warm water and cotton. if the baby’s skin is dry oil should be gently rubbed on it.
Dress the baby quickly, o as the avoid chilling.
