2. Throughout my music video, there will be lots of evidence of the use of mise-en-scene. This will
include:
Setting
Costume
Lighting
Props
Colours
3. Setting
My music video will be set both indoors and outdoors.
Indoor scenes will feature scenes where the character is sad and out door scenes will feature
scenes where the character is trying to achieve or get something, and ultimately gets frustrated
when he cannot get what he desires.
The indoor location will be the bedroom of my character and the outdoor locations will be
woodland and open field space.
4. Costume
There will be three costumes that the main character will be seen in.
One of the costumes is casual outdoor wear – a black hoodie, jeans, converse, and a backpack.
This costume represents the character in a fairly average mood, minding his own business, and
thinking about the girl he is ‘infatuated’ with.
Another of the costumes is when the character is in his bedroom. He can be seen wearing a
black t-shirt. This represents when he is feeling lonely.
The final costume is when the character is outside in the dark. He is wearing a black hoodie,
jeans, converse, backpack, and a skeleton mask. This costume represents when he is feeling
angry and frustrated over the fact he cannot have the girl he is ‘infatuated’ with. The skeleton
mask could have connotations of rebelliousness and anti-social behaviour.
5. Lighting
Lighting plays an important role in my music video, as it helps to establish the mood of the
character and relate to sections in the song.
Levi Strauss’s binary opposites theory applies to my use of lighting. When the lighting is bright
and coming from the sun, there is a positive mood and when there is limited lighting it
represents a negative mood. This involves the binary opposites of light and dark.
My light sources will be the sun and a small LED spotlight, which produces a large amount of
light in the dark.
6. Props
The props that will feature in my music video include a phone and a lighter.
The phone will be used to show images of the girl whom the main character is ‘infatuated’ with,
and to also trigger the change from my character being in a positive mood to a negative one.
The lighter will be used to represent the recklessness, rebelliousness and anger experienced by
the main character. There are negative connotations around young people and fire, as a
stereotypical belief is that they will commit arson.
7. Colours
Colours play a large part in my music video.
Colours will be used to show transitions between moments and to heighten the images in
relation to the music.
When there are dark scenes, the main colours and images on the screen will be the most
important ones, and because of the light focusing on these, everything else will be pitch black.
This will force the audience’s attention onto the subject in view.
