3. 1. Audrey was born Audrey Kathleen Ruston in Ixelles, Belgium, to Dutch
aristocrat Baroness Ella von Heemstra, and wealthy British Banker Joseph
Victor Anthony Ruston, who were both members of the British Union of
Facists in the mid-1930s.
2. During the Dutch famine of 1945, Audrey was living in German occupied
Arnhem, and she grew so malnourished that when the Netherlands was
liberated, she got sick from too much sugar and condensed milk in her
oatmeal.
3. During the German occupation, Audrey went by Edda van Heemstra to
avoid suspicion due to her English sounding name.
